Ice Sculpture Fail

I'll definitely give blender and indigo a go this morning. At the very least, I still have to sculpt him some gloves and probably try to reproduce the freeze ray.

Thanks!

In reply to this comment by Obsidianfire:
Indigo does SSS, and matte, so it works fine on skin.

In reply to this comment by NicoleBee:
I'm looking at the indigo gallery right now and it does indeed look very awesome! I do notice a conspicuous absence of flesh/organic render images at their site, although seeing their other stuff I can't imagine it would be a problem.. How is it for those?
I'll definitely have to pick them up when I get home from work.

In reply to this comment by Obsidianfire:
Well here are some results from Blender and Indigo. Once you get it set up, the renders are sweet. http://definekkl.heliohost.org/?p=4

Thank you very much!
I'm not sure what I intend to use to render my eventual sculpture here. I've been used to using my old copy of max and milkshape exclusively, and haven't really needed to go into the whole setting up a render dealie, since most of everything would eventually be ported into a game renderer.

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)

K0MMIE says...

Ugh, this again? Why all this hate for men and the things we do? Everything you hate about men and porn, I hate about women and shopping.

Let's do some women myths/truths:

1. Women shop as a creative outlet, because they have no creative outlet of their own, and believe that spending money is the equivalent to painting or sculpting.

2. Women purchase clothes that are too small, not because they are losing weight and will need it, but to entice themselves into a healthier lifestyle. They purchase their reward to incite the means!

3. Women judge other women on their shopping choices, and believe that cloth sewn together defines you as a person.

4. Women need 100 pairs of shoes, because they have thousands of tendril feet hiding up their skirts.

5. Women group together to shop, to empower themselves to be better consumers, without this power grouping they are vulnerable and may make poor decisions. Because the only decision worth making, is a decision supported by 3-4 espresso caffeinated air-heads.

How does it feel to be lumped together with a group of dumb people? Not good? Yeah, so don't lump us all in the same category. Thanks.

Nice progress there! You shouldn't ever think its shit,

Oh, I don't! For one of my first 'serious' attempts at a more human face in modelling, this is pleasing me immensely. The reason there isn't more detailing in the face itself (save for a quick polypaint job) is that I want the forms to be settled before I get to them, although can't resist carving in a wrinkle or two. While I'm new at trying to do the caliber of work I'm aiming for, I'm an old hand at trying to stick with something until I get the hang of it, endless repetition, and practice to get things to a manageable level.

Not that I've ever used this patience for waiting to get more adept to any effect such as, oh, FINISHING something I start

I tweaked with the ear, eye and mouth shapes a little tonight, and will post more progress above as it goes.

Zbrush handles symmetry, provided the geometry is divisible in the appropriate halves, automatically, and is really at times like handling a lump of clay rather than modelling. You can even edgeloop and divide at your discretion (for the former, you can go back to the base resolution and then tweak and re-project the resulting geometry to work with the details you've already sculpted in.) It's a really remarkable program and doesn't drive me nearly as nuts as box modelling - although I find I'm frequently transporting my meshes between it, 3d max, and whatever else I need for uvw mapping or what have you.

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I will probably soldier on with this study before moving on to another, and get more practice on. I'm halfway tempted to try and work this face into something more human looking and proceed into some sort of illustration - even if it inevitably turns out to be more stylized than photorealistic.

For reference, I used a small smattering of photographs (I need to enlarge my reference folders!), abused a number of Burne Hogarth anatomy books (you would think I would eventually learn something from their dog-eared pages) and generally concentrated on parts of the face without taking enough account of its whole form.

Conversation on whether this is 'art' or 'softporn' reminds me of BBC documentary "How Art Made the World", in which they open by discussing the Venus of Willendorf (http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/s/images/stoneag_willendorf.lg.jpg), a female-form sculpture from >25,000 B.C..

Turns other there are many eerily similar ancient sculptures from many different ancient cultures... the most attractive thing to sculpt was a female form with exaggerated sexuality (nude with large hips/breasts/etc.) and a lot of weight on her (a rarity with the hard lives they led). The sculptures are also devoid of facial features...

Anyhow, the only point I really wanted to make is that there are a lot of different emotions involved in the human condition, and we've always been driven to control and harness our emotions and the emotions of others. First breakthrough was complex language, then art,... now we have Zoloft and porn on DVD... truly we've come a long way.

TF2: Meet the Red Team

Kevlar says...

Hi folks,
I think the points above are all extremely well made. At first, (I wrote the video description right after seeing the video for the first time) I was impressed with the creativity required to sculpt entire dialogue sequences around many TF2 voice snippets I haven't yet heard. That element of using game assets (instead of soundalikes or just kids doing bad voiceovers) really kept me in the movie. However, the terrible pacing and stretched sequences definitely took me out of it as well.

Now, why haven't the Scientologists been able to express what they do so succinctly before?!

I think that quote will stay with me forever.

Haha Glad you all liked it so much! I work in the art department for The Onion News Network and this was one of the most fun pieces to put together. (Also one of the most stressful because that cycle was VERY art-heavy. (Let's just say there are more surprises in store for you all over the next two months as more webisodes from that cycle of shooting are released. :-)

To "iwastheturkey," - I sculpted a kidney out of clay and then created a rubber mold of the clay kidney. Then we used a polyurethane casting material (called Flex Foam-IT) to make tons of fake kidneys. (Tedious process, as we only made two molds and we needed A LOT of kidneys...) They each took about 20 minutes to dry enough so that we could coat them and paint them and then they were set to dry and await a second coat of paint. I also made the "This is only the beginning" note, and we all thought it'd be funny to throw the hat and some socks in the bag, though I think only the hat is seen in the final cut.

We've been keeping track of all of the discussion that this video has caused and we're loving it. haha Again, from all of us at ONN's Art Department, thanks for watching and so glad you enjoyed it! :-)

A brief lesson on Michelangelo's David

Trancecoach says...

>> ^djsunkid:
This makes me realise that I really am curious about the statue. The video hints that the statue revolutionised the art form, and that leaves me wondering, what do they mean by that? What did michaelangelo do that was SO different with this statue? What did he figure out?
Hmmm....

Before Michelangelo, David is usually depicted after his battle with Goliath, usually standing on the beast's severed head. Michelangelo depicts David not in victory, but at a moment prefiguring that victory: in the instant between conscious choice and conscious action, the moment when an individual makes a choice--and commits to act on that choice. Michelangelo sculpted David not as a triumphant victor, but as a thinking, resolute being -- the preconditions for victory.
