Brokers MANIPULATING MARKET to save hedge fund billionaires

vil says...

How many brokers shorted GME? Will the world crash if they burn and the whole market learns not to sell short other than as a hedge and/or in a quantity that is unlikely to not be available?

For me it is the shorting brokers that are doing something that is not acceptable. The kids are taking advantage and probably colluding, but that would not happen without the prior excessive shorting.

Obviously it had to stop at some point. Possibly regulation is needed for the shorts.

The funny part is that some of the liability is probably in the direction of people who have a stake in Robin Hood, and that was what got it stopped.

Now you know why i don't have any yet. I want some, but I'm not paying 40 times it's value.
Same goes for Amazon but it's only at 6 times value.

BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC Official Teaser Trailer #1 (2020)

Disney is doing a live-action remake of Robin Hood. I foresee "Cats"-level awfulness, followed by a cacophony of Furries wailing like the damned.

On the other hand, if you've ever wanted a to score with a real Maid Marion, here comes your chance!

Are you saying we did pay him 4-8 hours of overtime then?
If you dropped your job to do something nice on the clock, you would get fired, doncha think?

If we went off the clock, kudos.

Sure, more good than bad, but 100 good deeds don't erase one horrific crime. Ask Pablo Escobar, the Robin Hood of Medellín. He's not a good guy because he helped the poor, right?

You just love to shit on cops.

I know this is a un believable story to you because in you small little peanut mind all a cop can be is bad.

There is more good than bad but you narrow minded head is blinded by your own prejudice .

Alien: Covenant | Official Trailer

poolcleaner says...

I am a fan of Alien Rez, not because of Joss Whedon's patchwork script, but because at least it had the familiar comedic elements of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and his usual returning ensemble cast (Ron Pearlamn, Dominique Pinon), as well as Sigorney Weaver being a badass mother.

Just my opinion. I love all of Jeunet's films; as wild and varied as the genres, his film style and character driven stories transcend the genre. City of Lost Child, Amelie, Delcatessen, Micmacs -- really excellent track record. Cool bit of science fiction in all of his films, even if just sort of a chaotic sense of fate and surrealism.

Ridley Scott is hit or miss -- but then again, Ridley Scott has far more a prolific film career so it's like arguing the planetary distances versus the intergalactic distances, we can't fully comprehend the multitude of influences involved in making a film and the secret to making it a good film, so what does it matter if it's 1 astronomical unit, 2 light years, or 26 billion light years, it's all beautiful art.

My kindness aside, his last 5 films: Robin Hood, Prometheus, The Counselor, Exodus, The Martian -- typical and BORING blockbustery movies. 1492 and everything after have been epic suck fests. Even Hannibal was a let down. They're all movies you're sort of excited about, if it weren't for the fact that he drags them out and adds little element of noticeable flair. Like Spielberg, hidden in realism. I want the stylistic elements of Alien and Blade Runner and Legend that PULLED YOU OUT of the movie experience to say loudly: This is art.

The soundtracks especially -- Ridley Scott replaced the original scoring of his movie Legend, which was a dazzling score by Tangerine Dream -- he replaced it with Jerry Goldsmith in rerelease... which sort of makes it all come full circle when you listen to the awful, typically EPIC score of Prometheus, minus all the atmosphere that the original soundtrack provided.

Ridley Scott seems to be heading down typical slasher movie plot lines. I mean, alien and aliens were awesome movies with different plots and feel. The latest ones seem afraid to risk anything. Say what you will about #3 and #4, they at least attempted to be fresh.

I think I'll wait for home viewing on this one. I'll be more interested in Blomkamp's.

How Systemic Racism Works

Mordhaus says...

The sad thing, people like her are educated in colleges that slavery is exclusive to white people, racism is exclusive to white people, and all white people are racist.

Stop 1: This ended in 1962 per her comments. So in the time since, over half a CENTURY, people who were affected have not been able to make it out of their situation. This includes their children and grandchildren, all kept down by 'the man'.

Stop 2: Let's totally ignore the facts that the government subsidizes schools in poor districts and in many states there is a robin hood clause for school funds. Again, in the half century plus time period, there have been no changes to the system that were supposed to improve it. Let's also ignore that ALL of our schools that are not private tend to be having lower education quality. Additionally, let's ignore completely the numerous grants and special loans that are given to people of non-white and non-male status. This includes the special restrictions in place that specifically force schools to give spots in contested classes to minorities.

Stop 3: True, regrettably. You can't stop people from making assumptions.

Stop 4: Yes, but this isn't due to color, it's due to the war on drugs. Yes, crack sentences were harder because it was of epidemic proportions and the effects of crack are wildly different from regular cocaine. Rethink our war on drugs and we could easily solve this disparity.

Stop 5: True, but this goes to the heart of another issue, the failure of our police force.

Stop 6: Same as stop 5.

Anything Robin Hood could do, she could do in high heels

SFOGuy says...

Sorry, Magicpants. I couldn't figure out something more clever in the moment and I wanted to make reference to Robin Hood and the feminist tradition of the Ginger Rogers...Maybe it should have been "She could do anything Robin Hood could do with her feet?" I dunno. Maybe I shouldn't have tried for clever.

Jon Stewart's 19 Tough Questions for Libertarians!

bmacs27 says...

Let's do that. The one point of agreement I have with this guy is we need to declutter the conversation. Entities like money, governments, corporations etc don't exist. There is only the fact of our material circumstances.

One point I found somewhat hypocritical was his take on policymakers. He says we should blame them when he openly admits they are all bought. In my mind, this is effectively voluntary purchase of the initiation of force. If nobody paid, politicians would have nothing to sell. Inevitably all force is initiated by the highest bidder. Wealth itself is power, and power wouldn't be so named if it didn't imply force.

As you've already pointed out in another thread everything we see, all of our material circumstances, were originally appropriated by conquest (the initiation of force). Thus, initial material circumstances were not morally obtained. Since material wealth begets a trade advantage this initial windfall is likely to entrench your power. For this reason all material gains are suspect.

For these reasons I view wealth itself as immoral. There is a reason Robin Hood has such high standing, and it is not because he robs from the state and gives to the private sector. It's not because he doesn't initiate force. It's because he redistributes ill-gotten gains by whatever means necessary.

Pacifism is selfish.

Wealth Inequality in America

renatojj says...

@cosmovitelli he can't have understood Marx if he can't tell the difference between Communism and Socialism, and he shouldn't bother either since Marx rarely makes any goddamned sense. He's better off learning socialism from anybody else.

You make statements loudly, but you don't make a point. Yes, we need governments, but like you said, they're not agents of the people, they're corrupt and selfish power hungry institutions. I agree with you. If that's the case, doesn't it logically follow that having LESS government is the way to reduce the amount of damage the "powerful" can do to us?

@aaronfr I won't argue whether you were pandering, just that the points you made were awfully cheap, had nothing to do with libertarianism, but with the obvious and laziest misinterpretation one can make of it. Starting your reply with "Libertarian nonsense" is the easiest way to get upvotes from the videosift scum of mindless socialists that can't be bothered to read a full post worth of innacurate statements.

@dag it makes me even sadder that you seem to believe government has your best interests at heart. The government is the agent of that very wealth inequality that makes you so angry. I see limiting government as the way to limit that blatant social injustice, the very institution that tricks suckers into thinking it is "redistributing wealth", when in fact it's been acting as an inverse Robin Hood all this time, taking from everybody, and wasting or giving to the disgustingly rich 1%. Don't dehumanize me, don't dismiss me as some shill for the wealthy, as a brainwashed second-handed thinker. Can't you seriously consider the possibility that government is not part of the solution, but part of the problem? Is that too unbelievable for you?

Firefly proves "darn" is more badass than "This is Sparta!"

Asphere says...

You can't compare Picard and Mal. Picard had a prestigious position in a federation that had a fairly rigid moral code. Picard wasn't barely getting by. He represented the best of humanity during the best of times. Mal, on the other hand, was living under a totalitarian regime and was barely keeping food on the table. His life was a struggle. It would make more sense to compare him to Han Solo, Robin Hood, or other "thieves with hearts of gold".

Why must the heroes of today be such villains? Whatever happened to the old kind of heroes, who were actually promoting ideals and not cold-blooded murder?
Neither this nor the Sparta scene referenced sparked the kind of admiration in me that it apparently did in the majority. It just felt disgustingly nonchalant of human life.

Old kind of heros?
Like Hercules? Achillies?
I think society would be contemptibly evil if all we watched was Christmas specials.

Captain Picard is a nearly impeccable hero.
