It's not a publically availably road that isn't blocked off. The roads ARE blocked off. The people in the way are other drivers, who set off at timed intervals as stated above me by sir maxx of mad.

Nope, rallies are timed events, they set off at timed intervals, some competitors are much faster and have to overtake as they catch up the ones that left first.

^ I mean absolutely no disrespect to rally drivers (cause it's a completely different experience of driving and takes tremendous skill, too), but this crash showed the man really was pretty much utterly incompetent as far as F1 driving goes.

Q: Why did he crash?
A: He was going too slow - there was obviously WAY too little downforce generated, which would have provided the necessary traction for the car to not freaking spin off while GOING IN A STRAIGHT LINE. If this would have happened in the first corner, I wouldn't make such a big deal out of it - and I wager it's probably what Renault expected would happen - but he must have been instructed against this a hundred times, yet he still made the mistake. So yeah, epic fail.

The description makes it sound like he's some shmoe with more money than brains, but the guy is a actually a very accomplished rally driver.

@Sagemind: Actually it looked like he went just about full lock left, but the wheels weren't turning because he hit the brakes too hard, and all the wheels locked up. Probably a muddy surface or something.

At any rate, n00b rally driver if he didn't know to take his foot off the brake. >_>

It was intentional, he never once tried to counter-steer out of the spin.

They make it illegal to spectate so close, but they dont enforce it. The reason its illegal is so if theres a crash they arn't liable for your injury because it was illegal in the first place.
