Raccoons attacks little girl

Khufu says...

Ya that mom was running on pure adrenaline... at one point holding the kid upside-down in left arm while holding the racoon in the other arm and shouting to the kid to get inside.

And in the racoon's defense, it was "allegedly" rabid:)

not judging but am more amazed than amused.

the poise of the woman to get her daughter into the house, while handling a rabid animal biting her - THEN stopping in mid-toss to warn a neighbor BEFORE she tossed it (not a bad toss either) - found it similar awe-inspiring.

not to say folks might not rib her for a few days afterward...

"jack's been looking for a bouncer, why not give him a call?"

"suddenly, around 7 AM every morning, we're having all sorts of small animals running by the house like they're afraid of something. isn't that the time you take your kid to school?"

"bet now when you tell your daughter to clean her room or your husband to pick up his socks - THEY LISTEN!"

"gonna call you the next time one of those missionaries stops by the house. would be worth money to see someone hammer-toss a mormon."

of course, she might be like...

So five co-drivers/navigators all mis-read this turn on during the walk-through? Or did road conditions change (wetter/gravel dumped on road before curve/someone moved a braking check point marker?)

Why Humans Are Obsessed with Cats

Payback says...

I also don't get this "dogs were domesticated by humans, cats domesticated themselves" bullshit. Dogs were domesticated the exact same way as cats, the only difference is we discovered cats are only useful for rodent control, as hunters. Dogs could be hunters (terriers), hunter-helpers (pointers, retrievers), protectors and herd control (shepards, collies), beasts of burden (Rottweilers), etc. Of course we spent more time working with dogs. They had useful abilities already. Cats are much like rats, racoons and other animals that thrive in the presence of humanity. They're just at the top of their respective food chain, like we are.

Baby Raccoons toy with angler

Ashenkase says...

You can hear the road near by. Mom probably met here demise there as you would never see cubs on their own with out Mama putting up a massive stink.

Racoons are mostly nocturnal as well so its not common to see them out and about in broad daylight.

Hope this guy took them in or found a shelter for them.

Baby elephant causes havoc at home

enoch says...

@Oxen_Morale
yeah..i am struggling to see how this is a liberal thing.
this is about saving a baby elephant that would have otherwise perished.

this is admirable.

the simple fact is that this woman made a choice and realized the consequences and decided those consequences were acceptable.

should she just have left the baby to die? while having the resources, time and patience to nurture this baby elephant to health, and possible giving it a happy life?

i have saved:baby squirrels, muskrats, racoons, rats and adopted countless puppies, kittens and even birds on occasion.

should i have left them to perish as well?

i think your snap judgement was not very well-thought out.

were you aware there are elephant sanctuaries that accept retired circus elephants and former zoo elephants?

i bet this lady knows about them.so while your concern about this babies future is admirable, this woman knows what she is doing.

Helpful raccoon washes your things

slickhead says...

I said they can feel more when dousing. The racoon is simply examining the items.

"Their paws contain highly developed nerves, and the water actually makes their paws more sensitive.

"Dabbling behavior in water is a fixed motor pattern in raccoons. Since only captive raccoons exhibit food-dousing behavior, scientists believe that washing food is simply a substitute for normal dabbling behavior, which has no other outlet in captivity,"

Feeling things underwater is what they do. Why do you imagine the owners have supplied the racoon with a water bowl full of toys? It is to occupy its attention.

sanderbos said:

But the Wikipedia paragraph you quote speaks only of them washing their food, not every single item they come across.
Maybe those owners have not been feeding it, or maybe it thinks it's an 'Apple' phone (Apple phones aren't waterproof so that makes it easy to identify them even (especially?) if you're a raccoon).
