SIAM 7X DUAL SCREEN SMARTPHONE - OFFICIAL INTRODUCTION

Solar Roadways - Reality Check

halfAcat says...

Assume A=1m^2 of t=5cm thick glass, thermal conductivity k=1W/(m*K), glass to be kept at a constant 5°C with an average ambient temperature (averaged over the whole winter season day and night) of 0°C => temperature difference DT=5°C (also no salt to help, original promo video claimed that as an advantage of these things), you'll need roughly

A*k*DT/t = 100W of constant power (day and night for the entire winter!) to keep the tiles at 5C (i.e. 100W/m^2 of tile).

There's NO WAY you'll produce that much power per square meter on average (day and night!) in the northern winter (!), meaning the tiles would soon be covered by that thin hard layer of compacted snow that you get, rendering them basically worthless in the winter.

There's also a negative feedback mechanism: if you don't produce enough power to melt all the snow or ice, some of the area gets blocked, which reduces power output even further.

Where I lived, in northern MI, these tiles would be useless for about 9 months of the year

Apparently it takes a shitload of energy to melt ice, but how much energy does it take to prevent ice from forming?

The Rolling Stones-Angie

Trout says...

Not to nitpick, but this really shouldn't be tagged as Live Music.

Jagger is lip-synching (nicely), Mick Taylor is fake playing Nicky Hopkins' awesome piano part, and Keith Richards isn't even onstage with the rest of the band (he appears in just a few cutaways). And, of course, there's no audience.

This is one of the promo videos that the Stones shot for the '73 single version of Angie (which is the version of the song we're hearing). Still a really cool video, and nice to have on the Sift.

Designing a Transformer

artician jokingly says...

Exec #1: "So, this promo video is almost done. We need something edgy though. Something that speaks to the kids and kids-at-heart. What are they into today?"

Exec #2: "There's that one sound... Old video game music. Chiptunes! That's it!"

Exec #1: "That's that really annoying, scratchy music isn't it? Doesn't every single media source rely on that now?"

Exec #2: "We can push it further. You know... make it even edgier. It's supposed to be annoying, right? Let's use hard core chiptunes. Something so annoying it's like nails on a chalkboard! They will LOVE that!"

Exec #1: "DO IT!"

African Men. Hollywood Stereotypes.

Deano says...

>> ^longde:

It just seems like you have an ax to grind with africans, and your last comments show it.
African people aren't violent warlords; but they are homophobic, dogmatic, and patently dishonest. I get it. Thanks for your contributions to this anti-stereotyping video.
Who doesn't try to put themselves in the best light? British people, atheists, and gay people -three of the most moral peoples on the planet -never do that. >> ^Deano:
>> ^longde:
I'd rather like to see you in Nairobi in their faces patronizingly asking them about their personal beliefs.

I'd be quite happy to. Though I don't see why it would have to be patronising. If you want to have an honest dialogue then those matters are going to come up and everyone should be willing to discuss them.
It would make a change from my experience in London where it's quite the opposite way around. I often encounter Nigerians who are often more than comfortable sharing their views about religion and not so subtle opinions about homosexuality. They tend to be women due to the sector I'm in and one was so pushy as to wonder what I did on a Sunday if I didn't go to church. And then followed it with "Are you gay?" She was blissfully unaware that she was putting herself in disciplinary trouble. She just didn't care.
My mate used to work at the passport office here in London which was the centre of quite a few heated political disputes in the last few years. The workforce included a bunch of really nice African guys but dodgy as hell and always pulling some scam.
This is, in my view, definitely a cultural difference. My friend is a straight arrow, very reliable and honest so the contrast between him and others (hell even myself as I like to cut corners sometimes) is more pronounced. In another country some of those behaviours (including racial bullying and generally taking the piss) might be fine but here not so much. The problem with the passport office is that they lacked leadership and strong management so everyone ran amok.
So getting back to the video, yes it's nice to challenge stereotypes but let's remove the rose-tinted spectacles at the same time. I'm sure these chaps are as super nice as they are depicted, but it IS a depiction designed to promote a charitable cause. Everyone has prejudices and blind spots, everyone can and will be an arsehole. Even after you strip away the stereotype you can't get rid of that.

Apologies for not replying promptly @longde but work has consumed most of my time over the weekend.

I have no axe to grind. I thought I had expressed myself clearly but I apologise for failing to do that. My original comment was intended to counter the somewhat rosy, unrealistic and some might say shallow depiction of African men in the video.

It's not much different from those lovely promo videos showing off everyone in their best light (anyting from the Olympics springs to mind). We intuitively KNOW the reality behind such things and my comment was merely a reminder of that. And I put the smiley face on because, no, I do not have a problem with anyone from Africa and I resent that accusation. I have plenty of experience and appreciation for people from all walks of life but I'm not afraid to call it as it is. If this video was going the other way I'd be providing counter-examples as well. I've got plenty of experience of the good and bad in people - and if you heard me rant about my Norwegian family I can only assume you'd think me anti-Scandinavian

Finally I'm a bit puzzled by your last sentence. It really doesn't make any sense to me. Perhaps you could explain. Honest question.

Deadmau5 show with "4D" projection

westy says...

bit of a missed opertunity , music was good , but really half arsed effort with the projected video looked like a 1990's cinema promo video or some 1990s theme park 3d video.

Just using basic colours but lighting multiple buildings up in time with the music would be infinetly better , often for music visualization the more minimal and selective things are what have the most impact.

the whole building projection working with the architectural can work well but evan then i think the more minimal effects are the most striking , like having water pore down the building or making it look like the building has changed shape as a whole by blocking parts off , or lighting features of the building up like the windows in a way to make it look like the building is doing stuff rather than sumone simply projecting an image on the building.

Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence - Promo video from the WTC

Hybrid says...

I had initially mistaken this WTC version as the original video (hence the URL), but after looking on Wikipedia I discovered this was filmed by French TV, rather than it being an official promo video.

Regarding the official video, I dunno, I really like it. Great director with some pretty iconic imagery now.>> ^ulysses1904:

One of my favorite songs of all time, thanks for posting this. I like this video better than the other version, with the king carrying a lawn chair up a mountainside, or whatever it was.

Zero Punctuation - EVE Online

Krupo says...

Ha ha ha - sparkle dragons and nerds. The flying troll thingie is funny. And "they advertise on the Escapist, which I interpret as a challenge" part is great.

Is it just me, or is the video in the promo video after his review WAY BETTER than his official theme song?

Then again, most things are.

MiG-29 Day Of Flight (remix)

It sounds like the music for all jet fighter promo videos are composed by the same person. That song from the Matrix would have been a more compelling track had it been continued.

I liked the camera angle from the bottom of the nose looking back to the intakes.

Music for VideoSift Promo Video (Music Talk Post)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Thanks guys - in the end it turned out that music would have swollen the file size a little too much. But I would like to make another promo video soon- so thanks for the advice and suggestions.
