As he mentioned the problems are numerous and extremely difficult to solve. One of the problems he didn't mention was navigation. Stars are so far way that if the trajectory of the probe is off by even by a fraction of a fraction at the start of its journey it could miss its target by light years. Don't even get me started on interstellar radiation and the shielding technology we don't have.

There are some schools like this in Germany as well. Usually children that have issues like attention deficit disorder or do not fit into a normal school (problem child) will attend to such a "Forest school" (Waldschule). There are studies that it benefits development as the change in scenery from the busy city life helps the children adjust. It is definitely not very common and children still need to attend regular classes.

To say it has a flair of "anti science" is a bit far fetched as these schools often teach a lot about the local flora and fauna, do stuff like looking at water samples under a microscope or take earth probes. Sure it is not super scientific, it probably compares to what most kids would do as boy scouts - except it's part of the school's education program. For some kids this approach is better at fueling their scientific curiosity than in a regular school environment where they have many other issues to deal with.

I'm wondering if the thermometer he used wasn't really an accurate way to measure and that radiant heat may be more significant (measuring the temperature of his clothing would have been useful). On many occasions I've had to do manual labor in humid, over 120F buildings all day and shorter stints in 150-160F areas (attics, crawl spaces). It's not at all pleasant, and drinking a ton of fluids is important, but regardless this guy seemed to suffer more than he ought to have (not that I condone leaving children or animals in parked cars). I bet if he put a probe on the part of his shirt exposed to the sun, he would find it was well over 150F.

So as a relative newcomer* to the backcountry, here's my $0.02:

They were incredibly lucky.

Going into a gully like that after a snow storm is a "terrain trap" where even a small slide can accumulate very deep snow. Getting buried under 2-3m is bad, but 10m+? Unless you have the world snow shoveling champion team in your party, you're dead.

Good on them for carrying shovels and probes, but where were their transceivers? The article states that the victim had his transceiver with him but the others didn't. A single transceiver is about as useful as a prick in a nunnery.

The only reason that guy is alive is he managed to stick his ski pole above the snow. Without that, by the time they find him, they're not rescuing him, they're recovering the body.

Most importantly, they knew it was a sketchy line and they went anyway (and altogether.... jesus.... spread the fuck out... no-one gonna rescue you if you're all buried).

Right there, that's the fatal mistake. I know guys who have hiked for 6 hours to get to a run, looked at it and turned back. If you're not sure, don't go. Even if it means climbing back out.

So to sum up:
unsure about conditions: don't go
the entire party doesn't have a shovel/probe/transceiver each: don't go
if you absolutely have to go: one at a time and aim for a safe spot
