True Facts : Dragonflies

Stormsinger says...

Just one? He was probably one of those oddball gamer dragonflies, hoping to snag a few minutes of playtime.

Payback said:

I had a workstation set up in my garage. Every year, about midsummer, a dragonfly would fly up in front of my face, hover, checking out what I was doing onscreen for about 10-15 seconds, then leave. Coolest freaking thing ever. Must have been something about the refresh rate or colours, but still hilarious.

Cat Racing

Chaucer says...

to me, this is actually the savannah chasing the other cat which is why they werent equal at the start. you can see the savannah reaching out to swat on the last jump and when it goes to jump up on the headboard. The cat that "won" looks to be taking up a defensive posture on the headboard. This looks like maybe a normal playtime for the cats and the owner just put some obstacles in the way.

The Danish School Where Children Play With Knives

SDGundamX says...

@Gratefulmom

People who disagree with science generally don't come out so well in the end--see anti-vaxxers, climate change deniers, etc. I'd change my mind about these kindergartens if there were solid science behind them.

And if you look into it, you'll see there is very little good science to support this style of kindergarten (i.e. the sample sizes are small, no case studies or longitudinal studies, studies rely heavily on self-reporting of either parents and children, etc.) whereas there is a lot of well done research that shows the lifelong benefits of "traditional" pre-schooling (i.e. longitudinal studies that show demonstrable effects even after controlling for external factors).

I would love to see a well thought out longitudinal study that compares how the outdoor kindergarteners fair against those from traditional classrooms but unfortunately the only research I could find compared the outdoor kids to kids who had never been to kindergarten at all.

And of course comparing kids who went to any sort of kindergarten to kids who haven't is going to favor the kindergarten kids if you're looking at things like social skills, ability to take direction from adults, etc. (which is exactly what the studies done on the outdoor kindergartens do).

So it's not about disagreeing with you so much as it is not finding any evidence that this style of pre-school is better than going to a traditional preschool that includes a healthy amount of outdoor playtime (at least 1 to 2 hours a day if not more).

Tim Shoots His Thumb Off on Doomsday Preppers Shooting

grinter says...

Which is more likely?:
A) You and your family survive the impending apocalypse thanks to your trusty gun.
B) You accidentally shoot your thumb off (or kill your kid) while fantasizing about life in an action movie.

Thank you for answering that question on film.

I know several people that have been involved in gun accidents (including one death). I know two people that have bought weapons only to have them stolen by criminals. I don't know anyone who has ever used a gun in self defense (excepting warfare).
Your false sense of security and your 'bang bang' playtime are not worth the risk they bring to you, me, and the people we love.

German Shepherd And Baby Playtime

kids that age should not be allowed near dogs. They pull, poke, prod etc. Then the parents wonder why the dog snaps...

Or the dog could just get up and walk away if it was bothered, which it clearly wasn't.

The video is short, maybe it did walk away. But, chances are, the kid would follow and the owner would allow it to. I have had 2 German shepherds (individually) and currently I have a Tamaskan(mighty wolf). I can assure you that they have, no matter how well trained, their moods. I never allowed my young kids - or any one elses - to pull, prod, torment, or stand on them (especially when the dog was sleeping). My point is simple. It's NOT worth the risk. There are innumerable reports of dogs just snapping and attacking kids and adults. In 99.9% of cases it is the owners, not the dogs fault. Why would anyone, in their right mind, take the chance of having their kid scarred for life(or worse), the dog put to sleep, and having to live the rest of their lives with the guilt. I'm sorry my response is a bit long winded but, sometimes, even the obvious needs pointing out.

The only thing "obvious" is that if you truly believe that is a real possibility, then you should not have those dogs to begin with. If they cannot be trusted, then don't worry about supervision, worry about why you are insistent on keeping them and maintaining a dangerous situation.

I am now done.

Player Gets 15,000th Tomahawk Kill in Black Ops

Deano says...

>> ^SDGundamX:

He's banking knife throws off ceilings and walls. Also, gravity affects the knife and tomahawk, so not only do you have to lead the target but you have to take that into account as well, making the distance shots he pulls off pretty impressive. Plus, he got these 15,000 kills in one week of playtime (see the original YT description). I'd say that's pretty damn skillful.
/shrug
But maybe I'm a noob and everybody else can do that easily.
>> ^Deano:
Anyone have an opinion on how skilful this is? I always thought COD wasn't the most skilful of games, more geared to a broader audience who don't appreciate large skill gaps.
Bottom line - is this really skillful?

Seriously 15k in one week? I've got thousands of kills in Reach but over several months. He must be chained to his console with a bucket nearby.
