VideoSift 5.0 bugs go here. (Sift Talk Post)

mintbbb says...

These are not bugs, but something I'd like to see tweaked:

In the 'Top Videos Library', 'Top Videos from the Last 24 Hours' now shows videos within 24 hours of them being submitted. This used to be 24 hours from when they sifted/were published. Could we go back to that, or maybe add option to choose Last 48 hours. This list is now awfully short, and most videos disappear from it real fast.

My 'sifted videos' used to be sorted: the newest to sift went on top. Now, they are sorted in the order I originally submitted them. I usually like to know which video just got sifted. Now I have to scroll down my videos and try to figure out which one is the newest.

Also: now when a video is killed, you can't read the comments any more. Lots of videos have interesting/fun comments, then they turned out to be dupes. But you were able to go back to the dupe and read the comments. I miss that

Also I cannot pinch/zoom/resize VS from my mobile devices. The site is doable on a tablet, but with a cell phone, it would be nice to be able to resize it and make the whole thing smaller.

Thanks, and sorry if these have been posted/addressed already!

Numberphile with a beautiful Card Trick on the Base of 3

xxovercastxx says...

*talks

I learned the 21 card variation as a kid and then combined it with another trick. In the variation I knew, the card was always #11 after 3 deals so I would manipulate the deck afterwards to get it down to the bottom. Then you have the other person pinch the pile firmly near the edge and then slap the deck out of their hand. What happens if you do it right is the bottom card stays in their fingers while the rest scatter on the floor. It gives the trick a nice bit of flare for the finish.

Let's talk about *Promote (Sift Talk Post)

@dag & @lucky760 - Remember, I'm a strongly opinionated webdeveloper, so take my criticism with a pinch of salt. There are tons of stuff that is really good with the site, but the things that don't work really makes me itch. So, please don't hate me

Just noticed this, which have been bothering me, but now that I understand the mechanism it doesn't bother me as much;
the font size of a comment increases based on the number of votes it has!
Looks a bit weird though, when all the comments have different font sizes.

VideoSift 5.0 bugs go here. (Sift Talk Post)

mintbbb says...

I have noticed a few things, I THINK they haven't been mentioned here yet:

I don't see if/when a video is 'killed'. Meaning, this is a dupe of my video:

http://videosift.com/video/Kid-Looks-at-Boobs?noredirect

It got dupeof'd, so it redirects. But the dupe does not look 'killed' - and now of course I have already forgotten, how you could see if a video was killed in previous VS. There was a tag or something? Looking at my discarded and killed own videos, I see no flags, tags or anything.. mebbe I am too tired atm..

Also with dead videos.. the only indication seems to be 'fix the embed' link.

Anyway, with the dupe: the votes have been transerred, but I still see all the voters of the dupe. However, I do not see any comments on the dupe. I guess now 'comments have been lost in the ether at this killed duplicate.' is true.

And, I chose the dark background. However, I get flipped between light and dark when I click on different things. It flips to light when I click on my profile, or my unsifted queue. Or sifted.. Turns back to dark when I click to frontpage etc.

Btw, where is the dead pool? So far I haven't been able to find it

And one more thing: I cannot seem to pinch and zoom/stretch with any mobile device any more.

Sorry if these bugs have been mentioned, or if I am crazy and imagining things!

In general, awesome job! Thanks a bunch @dag and @lucky760!

EDIT: Oh, I see the 'Killed' and 'Discarded' tags now. Either you fixed that real fast, or I am more awake today!

Official Halo 4 Launch Trailer 'Scanned' Long Form

Deano says...

Bits of this look so cheap it makes me wonder what the point of saying Fincher is directing when you penny-pinch on everything else. They could have done some location filming for example to make the beach scene look real.

Is this the most amazing sleight of hand with a cigarette?

When his thumbs are together, the cig is held behind them. I suspect the tip of one thumb (left? hard to tell with low quality video) is pinching it against the back of the opposite hand. When he makes the thumb and forefinger circles, his left hand forefinger is holding the cig behind his left thumb.

A Look at Windows 8 - It's Almost not Terrible

draak13 says...

This was designed for touchscreen interface, so of course it's going to be better with a touchscreen. But, the idea of a 'touchscreen monitor workstation' does not make ergonomic sense. For the majority of us who sit at a desk with their monitor in front of them, imagine experiencing this software 'as intended,' with a touchscreen monitor. Now, imagine holding your arm out with your hand arched backwards and clicking items on the desktop...for 8 hours a day. If typing on a keyboard gives people carpeltunnel issues, mousing around with this kind of setup will have long lines at all the hospitals.

Let's say we have our ideal setup to prevent all injuries. We have the monitor lay flat on the desk or at rather flat angle, and then people can mouse around on it rather comfortably. Now, your monitor is where your keyboard goes. Typing on the screen works in a pinch, but a real keyboard is certainly much better. The only setup I've seen that has successfully married a touchscreen monitor with a keyboard is the new small tablet systems, where both the monitor and the keyboard are small enough to fit on your lap at the same time. Of course, if you want to do more than surf the web or check emails, that dinky screen really doesn't do it.

Touchscreens are for toys, not for productivity.

Man Changes Bike Tire in Less Than a Minute

Tojja says...

Yeah, he used a CO2 canister-based pump. Very handy for quick changes, but you need to be careful to do as he do and aim upwards when inflating (downward facing = greater chance of freezing inner tube - from experience). Note: Depending on temperatures and canister size (12g, 16g etc), CO2 canisters often only get you back up to 80-90PSI, which may or may not be enough for your setup

This was a great (and impressive) display. As someone who has changed HUNDREDS of flatties, my ramblings, FWIW:
- The tyre/rim combo can often mean removal (and reseating) of the tyre is a PITA, due to slightly small ID tyre bead and slightly oversize RIM OD. Inevitably this requires n+1 tyre levers, with n being the number you have in your pocket (tip: wheel quick releases make good emergency tyre levers at a pinch)
- 30 seconds spent identifying/removing source of puncture (glass/wire/thorn) saves many minutes of rework when you get another puncture a minute later from the bastard wire strand you didnt look hard enough for
- always carry a patch kit (or 1-2 of the self-adhesive sticky instant patches). Two punctures on one ride is rare but it happens and being stranded out of cell coverage then trying to peel off bar tape to seal a puncture is a way to ruin a good ride
- Replace old tyres. There is an exponential growth curve that describes the relationship between tyre age to incidence of punctures. Old tyres are the single most effective way to spend lots of time on the side of the road yelling

Jesus H Christ Explains Everything

redyellowblue says...

Santa is 3 persons. The actual Santa, Mom and dad (that really counts as one person), and the christmas spirt. Its simple.

Actually many are not aware of this, but there are a counsil of gods that basically make up the one god. Its difficult to explain, but think of it as a hourglass. In the pinch, that is god. At the bottom that is jesus, god, and holy spirit. But on the upper end, that is Hoaha, Gooha, zizzipo, meleliooo, Goney, Abcdee, and a trillion small men covered in blue fur.

First tent in Space

Porksandwich says...

I'm sure astronauts have pitched tents in space before. I mean you're weightless, so it's probably pretty friggin comfortable with no pinching and what not when sleeping. And a really comfortable and relaxing sleep leads to awesome dreams, I'm guessing flying is probably a popular one with the weightless sleep.

And......all that good comfortable sleep = pitched tents/morningwood.
