Moon Saturn Occultation - 22 Feb 2014

deathcow says...

Saturn has some of the highest contrast details of any planet, it really gives an effect of being a cutout or sticker. This is a very common reaction from public viewings on Saturn. People will look for stickers on the other end of the telescope. I have used some really high end refractors where Saturn color is subtle, can look almost paper white and pastels, etched with details.

The first time I looked at Saturn through a telescope I was struck by the fact that at this magnitude it looks like an icon of Saturn cut out of paper, not the actual Saturn.

How Did Mitt Romney Get So Obscenely Rich?

But... but... they CREATE jobs!

I know you're being sarcastic (thanks little pastel coloured box!), but I'm starting to think this might be one of the core issues with the economy.
We've always had a rich elite, but at least they used to be industrialists. Yeah, they paid people a lousy wage for awful and dangerous working conditions (despite the fact that "union" seems to be a dirty word these days, where do you think you got sick leave, holiday pay or even weekends?) but at least they employed a lot of people.

It seems to me that these days there's a whole sub class of the wealthy that make money just pushing money around in ways like this. Their profits are huge and they employ comparatively few.

Can a pink tank top end your career?

Stella Shout Out New Orleans Tennessee Williams Festival 200

Here is my second best New Orleans story -- first night there, I am sitting in a bar/restaurant, listening to a great classical jazz band, when I look out the huge plate glass window. Coming down the street .... A Bus Named Desire.
(Desire is the name of the neighborhood Stanley and Stella lived in; Streetcar named Desire was a streetcar headed to that destination.)
Next night, walking down Bourbon St and my attention is caught by a young man, blond, good-looking, who is clearly pissed at his trailing girlfriend. Total yuppy, wearing a pink Izod polo shirt and pastel Madras shorts. Yelling at his girlfriend to catch up: "Stella. Stella. STELLA."
I was happy. A bus named Desire and a yuppy yelling Stella.

LOL LOL I didn't know Stella was such a common name down south.

Yo, tweaking the channel colors is easy-there should be aan option for background colors, etc. Each place you can plug in HTML colors (chart on wiki) and then save the changes and test the look......you can change them until you get it right.....here on the VS, there is a spectrum of pastel colors allowed by the site, if you plug in an unacceptable one, the system will give you an error message.

Hey-Since I don't have a channel anymore, I am not able to see the options available to those who have one...the screen for tweaking the colors is not available to me-DotDude can help you out, is always more than happy to....He's MIA lately-Another helpful critter would be Blankfist or KP....... kronos loves to help out when he's not indulging in his primary program....What I would suggest is to take a look at someone's channels vibe you dig an hit them up-I could were it not for me not being able to have a screen in front of me-Gonna go find me some classic Electronica.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

From the little I've played with it, it looks pretty solid- the UI looks like something that will date very quickly though, much the way XP's Fisher Price style pastel windowing has. ... And it's definitely no Snow Leopard.

Halo 3: Homophobia Evolved (NSFW)

You're right.

I never said that gay jokes or racist jokes are okay. I'm sorry if it sounded like that. I take vulgar language very seriously. I don't think it has any place in society. I think parents that hear their boy talking like that should knock some sense into 'em.

I lived in San Fransisco when I was younger and I know a lot of gay people that I like very much. I saw more homosexuality in one week than you'll see in your life. I'm not threatened by Homosexuals. I'm annoyed by so called "Flamers". I think frat boys are especially annoying, and I make fun of guys wearing "bikini inspector" shirts. Does that make me intolerant? Well then why am I intolerant if I'm annoyed by a "Flamer"? I think a guy wearing a pastel colored shirt, daisy dukes, lipstick, and roller blades is asking for people to poke fun at him. That's all I'm saying.

I think some straight men are uncomfortable around gay men, not threatened. The more time you spend around people of different backgrounds and races and lifestyles, the more comfortable you feel around them, right? That's human nature.

P.S. You realize you're invoking Rosa Parks while we're talking about frat boys and gay halo 3 players, right?

Unearthly Paint on Glass: Aleksandr Petrov's The Cow

rickegee says...

Ok. I simply must sell this one because there is no way that it should perish in the queue due to its obscurity.

Aleksandr Petrov is a Russian animator who frequently works with the Pascal Blais Studio in Canada. He is one of the most renowned paint-on-glass animators in the world.

Paint-on-Glass is unbelievably difficult to pull off successfully. The technique involves creating a picture on a pane of glass with pastel paints, photographing it, and then "animating" the picture by manipulating the paints with your fingers. Petrov's version of The Old Man and the Sea is even more astonishing than The Cow. I would vote for this one 1000X if I could.
