LMFAHS!!
Dicks are always dumb, just look at Trump, biggest dick (with the smallest misshapen penis) dumbest and worst president ever by far, that's why smarter people use their big head for thinking. You might try it someday.

Know nothing Don couldn't read a script, couldn't say English words, couldn't complete a thought. President Biden has him beat by an easy 40 IQ points, likely more. It would be no surprise at all to find that Biden's IQ is more than double dumb Donald's. Donald Trump dumb-dumb dumb-dumb, President Biden Smart, smart-smart 🎵
Take it from someone who DID graduate from middle school.

Derp.
I'm not paying any extra. California gas prices didn't go up because Trump left all critical infrastructure totally unprotected from cyber attacks because he doesn't understand computers at all....only the East coast got hosed by Russian hackers and oil companies who do the bare minimum of safeguards. You know them Sergei?

'I can think of nothing more American': Beto O’Rourke

newtboy says...

Poorly said and dead wrong.

You accept Trump, a consummate liar with an agenda determining their message rather than the protesters. That's your main mistake.

They are not protesting against the flag, anthem, or nation.
They are using their access to their own audience to spread their message that police misconduct must be addressed. If that's unseemly somehow, tell Trump to stop it first, because he's using OUR platform. When he hasn't tweeted for a full year, and hasn't used his position to personally attack citizens for the same time period, come back and we'll discuss what private citizens are obligated to do in America.

It bears noting, taking a knee is how service men often respect fallen soldiers and is clearly designated appropriate flag behavior, but wearing the flag as clothing is insanely disrespectful and totally not allowed by national flag rules, yet you never hear draft dodging Trump froth at the mouth over the mouth breathers surrounding him draped in the flag like a toga.

Only when you wake up to reality and stop letting a bad liar with no connection to the truth determine reality for you will your problem of constantly being ridiculously wrong be solved.

bobknight33 said:

Very well said but dead wrong.

The Flag symbolize you right to protest. Don't protest that right.
Have and event and protest.

Again pointing out cops killing blacks but the real issue is black on black ( Chicago ) ..

Only when reality wakes you up will the problem be fixed.

MacBook vs Yoga Dance-Off

Their selling point for W8 and attempt to compete with Apple's iPad was meant to be unity between desktop and tablet, but that was always a pipe dream. They put the cart before the horse by forcing Metro on people before there was any semblance of a mobile app base so it simply became a nuisance.

A mobile interface should have always been adapted into the standard Windows UI, rather than existing as a separate entity with separate complimentary versions of IE, media players. They seem be trying to bridge the two together in W10 but I think it's too little too late.

Realistically though tablets are largely about consumption, the issue was that this was forced on desktop. I mean sure, I've seen the Surface make a great note taking device (any large Wacom tablet would do this great), but beyond that? I mean the idea of doing anything beyond basic Word let alone Excel/Access work on a tablet is farcical.

Clicking manage literally does nothing, lol. But thanks. To be fair, I have modified W8.1 quite a lot (e.g. bringing back start menu) but I did the same with W7 and never had such problems.

MS has a free Fresh Paint App, that's pretty cool if you have a stylus. Haven't found any others worth endorsing...

MS just wanted consistency between the Desktop OS, tablets, and smartphones. Unfortunately they forgot that people use desktops for production, not consumption. Windows 10 sounds more like Windows 8.2, but who knows.

As far as password, you could try to set a PIN instead (it's fast to type 4 digits to unlock). Or in desktop mode, right-click on Computer and choose Manage. Local Users and Groups snap-in will let you change password, etc.

MacBook vs Yoga Dance-Off

RedSky says...

Good metro apps are few and far in between, and the ones that do exist are usually gimped versions. It looks like it would be great with the tablet mode for general browsing, but really, without either iOS or Android's app ecosystem, the usefulness of a touchscreen is severely diminished. I don't believe it has Wacom-level precision for pen input (like Surface), which in itself would make it a great note taking device.

I don't like W8/8.1 on my desktop either, and regret upgrading from W7. For whatever reason I can't get access to user accounts settings (which has for some unknown reason been incorporated into Metro unlike virtually all other settings) because it crashes/hangs whenever I try to open it. So now I'm stuck with entering a password on my account each time I restart when I have absolutely no need to have one.

I had a couple of virtualised apps (I had a version of MS Office in an .exe file that I could run from a flash drive) but that no longer works probably due to compatibility issues.

My laptop's internet settings for some reason no longer remember passwords and I have to type it in each time. Meanwhile I see no tangible benefits. It loads slightly faster, maybe? But with an SSD the difference is marginal. W7's side-snap was genuinely a good idea. Meanwhile, W8 doesn't offer anything like that.

Metro apps are mostly useless to me. I'm glad that they're going to allow them to run natively in the desktop environment in W10 instead of co-existing through a finnicky side-screen mode but unless they actually offer improved functionality or ease of use over desktop (unlikely), I don't see me using them there either.

How it Feels (through Glass)

Deano says...

You're still getting a little too excited. This is a simulation. None of this is final. But even the promise of this does not obviate the need for a phone, The interface certainly does not have the richness of a phone. And I've not seen them suggest this is a phone replacement.

There are areas where it will struggle:

Simply being able to see a large amount of information from the device and without interfering with normal sight. With my phone I can read quickly and then be back in the real world by looking up. I don't see myself reading reams of data with this thing. I'd love to try though!

The interface is different/more limited. You lose haptic feedback and long-presses to expose different functionality. I'd love to see how good a feature-rich note-taking app will work. Voice-recognition is the most likely use.

But voice recognition remains difficult and performs variably.

And nothing to say of how slow it might be to change networks, adjust settings etc. Many things might be locked down to ensure a smooth experience for the average user.

So, integration (or how Glass will be useful).

Glass will serve as a nice entry-point into the phone experience. You could open the notifications in Glass but you might want to focus on recording some video.
Or you hover on a film poster and have IMDB open up the details on the phone. You might have a lot of these moments in a day. Imagine building up a list of pictures, quick ideas/notes, something useful someone said and then take your phone out only when you sit down. Everything is there for review. Glass might be a very good inbox.

I could instantly sync my photos. It's thus backed up on the phone straight away (and later on the net) and could be auto-shared - I don't need to issue copious voice instructions. Same with video. Glass will gather data but you might want it to hand stuff off to the phone. And net access isn't always guaranteed.

Looking up real world objects, scanning barcodes, even raw data and have it converted into usable data. You could hold up your phone but it's a nicer experience to have a document rendering onto your phone while you look at a page of data or even take a phone call. And you don't have to get the phone out of your pocket. Multi-tasking for the win!

I view pdfs and spreadsheets on my Note 2 all the time. I've not scanned much because it seems hit and miss and there's no cool software to do much with it. This would be amazing with my laptop. I often get printed documents or scraps of paper. Being able to instantly scan and digitise on the go would be almost revolutionary.

The point is Glass will be a very useful *extension* of the device you are already carrying around. Which people will be carrying around for many years to come.

I hope it's cheap as chips because getting it pinched off your face would be fun

xxovercastxx said:

I'd like to hear what sort of integration you have in mind, because I can't think of one that would be useful.

Glass is literally an Android phone in a new form factor. I haven't seen Glass doing anything yet that my phone doesn't do, the lone exception being attach itself to my face.

If they can solve the battery problem, I think they could bring Glass to market by 2015. That's not to say more traditional phones will be instantly be replaced but Glass will be able to fully replace the phone of those who do purchase it.

Gay Boyfriend by Garfunkel and Oates

eric3579 says...

Got a man, call him my boyfriend
Think Im falling in love
Only man that gives me things
That I am worthy of

Hugs me and holds me, kisses my softly
Calls me back right away
Communicates his feelings to me
And cares what I have to say

He says: Baby I love you, baby I need you
Never gonna let you go
Writes me love notes, takes me shopping
And to Broadway shows

Talk to him like he is a girlfriend
Slumber party every night
Ive never been so happy before
Hes almost Mr. Right

But I think hes hot and I think hes sweet
And I think hes gay and I think hes neat
Okay okay said my boyfriends gay
But what does it matter anyway
He hasnt come out of the closet yet
Til then Ill take all I can get

He doesnt think I know but I know
I know Ive always known
He doesnt think it shows but it shows
For sure its always shown
You might think its a little sad
But hes the best lover that Ive ever had

At night when were lying in bed hes not hard
Its okay cause he gives me head
Like my mum always said it takes more
Than a pound to be good in bed
You dont know the meaning of rock your world
Til youve been with a guy who thinks like girl

He lies and says that hes on meds
Thats why hes never stiff
When I ask if hes not into me
He always says As if!

But the way he makes up for his shortcomings
Just could not be finer
Cause my new best friend is his tongue
And his is my vagina

He reappears from under the covers
Lookin like hes been to war
Hes drenched in sweat he catches his breathe
Then he heads back down for more

Afterwards hes never tired
He just wants to talk
And cuddle me until I sleep
Then he takes his dog for a walk

Someday hell come out and Ill be happy for him when he does
But I know Ill be sad and I'll be thinking of what was
Someday this fairy tale will come to an end
Cause his fairy tail will find a like minded friend

He doesnt think I know but I know
I know Ive always known
He doesnt think it shows but it shows
For sure its always shown
You dont need no penetration
When you got a good dose of overcompensation

At night when were lying in bed hes not hard
Its okay cause he gives me head
Like my mum always said it takes more
Than a pound to be good in bed
You dont know the meaning of slot machine
Til youve been with a king who thinks like a queen

I know it's not forever but that's okay
Cause I'm his girlfriend, and he's my gay!

@shinyblurry Boy, I would LOVE to see you take high level Physics classes.

I'll be in the observation booth with the false glass that overlooks the lecture hall while watching your reaction as the professor is ripping you a new three-variable integrated volumetric "learning" space, for studious future note taking.

/Stay away from the Cosmology and Physics stuff, trust me. You look horrible. Most of the ideas are easily debatable by High School level Physics knowledge--I'm not kidding either.

Bill Nye Explaining Science on Fox is "Confusing Viewers"

Ferazel says...

I like the fact that the news anchor won't even admit that the world is getting warmer. Like it is some sort of trap. Does he not hear about the glaciers melting in Greenland or paths in the northern ice cap being accessible for one of the first times ever in recorded history? You can stomp your feet all you want about how climate models are wrong/complicated or that it is man made or due to solar regulations. However, I don't think you can deny the world is getting warmer, it's called a thermometer and a pencil and paper for note taking.

It's only been about 6 months for me, but I'm still using my iPad 2 heavily - can't see that changing in a year. Definitely not a perfect device but pretty damn useful for Kindle, movies, web browsing and games. I'm typing on it now.>> ^spoco2:

As far as I'm concerned (And I have three tablets in my desk at work, an iPad1, and iPad2 and a Xoom, and I write apps for them), they're all useless lumps really. I have zero desire to have one. My thoughts are pretty much exactly as per this Engadget article
The sad thing is that Microsoft had the design and functionality damn spot on with their Courier device. THAT, with the stylus and interface/note taking etc. etc. really WOULD have been a useful device. Something that would have replaced the stack of notepads I have at work.
But no, they scrapped it
I don't care how huge this tablet market currently is, what I'd like to know is how many people are regularly using theirs a year after getting it...

You use Firefox right? You'll definitely want this.

Deano says...

It could be big if you think about the whole metadata thing and where that might lead.

Having something that works visually and allows grouping/notes takes it to another level. It's a more engaging way of working and a helluva lot more useful than clicking on bookmarks.

Currently I mark sites with Delicious and I know I might need to reference them if I'm working on a project or have an idea. It's useful and reassuring. But it's not really great to work with and I can't do anything of the things posited here. I wonder if adding Mind Maps and visual links to files on my system could work - you could capture all your online and offline stuff in one place.

So after a while, with all the coming extensions, Firefox is, perhaps, becoming an OS. if you add search and working with contacts you've got something that could be very, very powerful. Isn't that what Chrome and the Chrome OS is aiming for?

The other consideration is how to back this up and do it securely. I know about Firefox Synch but haven't tried it yet.

Cool tool. Not sure if creating "groups" of tabs is necessarily groundbreaking, but certainly useful.

Wow, did I just sound like an indignant internet nerd or what? Sigh. I've got to get off the internet.

The Memristor Will Replace RAM and the Hard Drive

vermonter says...

jonny,

I think the part you are missing is the possibility of changes of order of magnitude. For example, what if I could just default to having a videocamera built into the edge of my eyeglasses and simply record everything I do 24/7 in beyond HD detail? Right now that would require far more memory than I can afford, but it would also eliminate much current note taking, minutes of meetings, even allow you to "go back in time" for snapshots.

What if I wanted to transmit that data over my cell phone to someone else to watch at the same time? What if 10 Billion people on Earth wanted to do the same thing?

I know squat about the memristor, but I do believe that the possibilities for computing technologies in particular are still ripe for orders of magnitude changes. It may be that vacuum tube computers were like the water wheel and transistors the steam engine. If so we still have a lot of room for improvement in efficiency and convenience.

Healthcare in the US vs Canada, Europe and Asia

Diogenes says...

things aren't always what they seem... and while i'm all for a *good* national healthcare system in the us, i think this piece is deliberately trying to compare disparate aspects of us and non-us healthcare systems... to prove a preconceived point (that mccain is *completely* wrong)

for example, i'm an american who has lived in taiwan for over 10 years now -- i am covered by taiwan's national healthcare system here (through employment and taxation), and i must say that it sucks

when this piece interviews a taiwanese doctor and asks how many taiwanese suffer medical bankruptcy in a year, to which the doctor answers, 'none' i believe that the point is completely misleading...

taiwanese don't go bankrupt over medical bills because if they can't afford the secondary care or an expensive life-saving procedure... well, they die -- the attitude here is different, and sadly, many asian countries put a much lower value on life -- heart bypass, organ transplant, chemo, etc, are *not* covered by the national healthcare system -- non-affluent taiwanese just get the word from the doctor on how much such procedures will cost them, nod, and never return... literally

national healthcare visits are provided by swiping your medical id card at any doctor's office or hospital and paying the minimum nt$150 fee (about usd$5) plus any overage on the alloted prescription value per visit -- waiting times aren't much more than a few hours, but the concept of bedside manner is missing completely - a doctor will spend an average of 5-10 minutes per patient, and i've even had them never look up at me from their note-taking (just tell me the symptoms, quickly)

it gets worse, doctors and hospitals are reimbursed through the goverment plan *per card swipe* ... so in virtually every case the healthcare provider will only do so much before telling you to return the next day for another swipe, err examination (you can only swipe once per day), even if this means leaving you in pain or allowing your condition to worsen -- imho, this has to be in contravention of the hippocratic oath (do no harm... even if through inaction)

so why not just return every day for a new swipe and follow-up visit? well, people have to work, and it's extremely unlikely that a person will take a week's worth of half-days just to get something fully checked out (in the work-ethic environment here, it would be tantamount to resigning from your job)

a recent dental checkup of mine went like this...

*swipe*
-wait 1.5 hours
-sit in the chair
-dentist uses a vibrating water-pick to knock some tartar off the back of my teeth
-rinse
-i ask for a flouride treatment (standard in the us) and am told to return the next day
(all of this in less than 10 minutes)
-i return the following day and swipe again to get the flouride, and am told by the dentist that he thinks i may have a cavity
-i'm told to return for another swipe the next day for an x-ray and treatment of the cavity
-i can't ask for another half-day from my employer, so i wait till the weekend and return for the remainder of the treatment
*postscript - the filling fell out while eating sushi two weeks later

for these reasons, most taiwanese with a bit of money buy *private* health insurance plans so that they have a *second* swipecard to whip out and save themselves some hassle and/or a more serious problem due to the mindboggling indifference and inconvenience

keep in mind that my personal experience happened in the capital city, taipei, where many doctors are western-trained and speak english -- i can only shudder to think what healthcare is like in the more rural parts of the island

so again, think twice before accepting any of the glib avowals/disavowals of these international healthcare professionals - imho, it's often a case of comparing one's *good* apple to america's *poor* orange
