Steve Jobs announces the iPad

spoco2 says...

>> ^volumptuous:
Not everyone "needs" the DSLR that I use. Some people just want the camera in their phone, or their little point/shoot.
That doesn't mean my DSLR is a STUPID PIECE OF SHIT or whatever.
Jeez people, calm down. Lots of times technology is aimed at specific functions for specific people. And, as usual with Apple, there will be the super hardcore haters, the dumbass Apple-Sticker-On-My-Car fanoidz, and then the rest of us who like gadgets we find useful enough to buy.
Duh!

No, but see, this is the problem with Apple... EVERY product launch becomes like the second coming of christ, so when it turns out to be something that is so very much 'meh'... well it gives us who think Apple is over rated something to crow about for a bit.

And your analogy doesn't work. Your DSLR is like a top of the line PC/Laptop, it's not aimed at mass market, but even those who don't want it can appreciate that it's very good at what it does.

And a mass market object also fills a need.

This is a product with no need. It's not quite good enough to replace a laptop, not the right form factor or features to replace a phone, not good enough to carry around to collect your thoughts or scrapbook as it has no camera or hand writing ability... it's just a big ol... meh. It takes away the thing that makes the iPhone great (it fits all it does into your pocket and is a phone), it takes away what makes a laptop/netbook great (ability to connect to things like tvs, and have a good typing experience, and be able to multitask, and surf the web properly (flash)) and is left with a .... well... an over sized media player with web.

I don't ridicule it because it's something I don't want, it's something I don't want that I also can't see more than a handful of other people wanting.

Wow... you can change the wallpaper... STOP THE PRESS

Gee... a WHOLE WEB PAGE in front of you that you can manipulate with your fingers... you don't say... like... um... tablet PCs that have been around for years? Or touchscreen desktops?

I'm sure I'll be proved wrong, and it'll be a complete success... but I really think they've lost it this time. I think this looks horrendously chunky and inelegant. Why does it have such large and horrendous edges around the screen?

Why is there no camera?

This device... the as yet announced 'Courier' is something that really does excite me. The interaction on THAT device is something that makes me excited about a portable computer again.

This? This does nothing for me... who really wants this limited functionality at this size? I'd rather this (plus more... camera etc.) in my phone that I can hold in my pocket rather than having less than that in something I have to carry in a bag.

If it were instead something more like what the Courier looks to be I'd actually see the joy in using it, the usefulness in having a 'live' scrapbook.

I just have this feeling that the iPad will be an iBomb.

But again... Apple seems to do no wrong, and people wee themselves over anything they put out... but this time... this time I don't see it.

Welcome back, ydj. And, wow, that's a fabulous video. Very well framed and the natural sounds are excellent.

Thanks Lucky, it was a video I submited for a weekend project over at Vimeo called "1 Minute Video" no edits, no camera movement, no effects, natural sound. Here is the winning entry http://www.vimeo.com/7047863 "Light And Water" it's just lovely.

A faithful Mormon speaks out against Prop 8 in Church...

EndAll says...

yeah, but I'd assume making this kind of statement he wouldn't really care that he had a friend record him. in my opinion it's definitely not staged.

I heard they make exceptions to that no-camera policy sometimes, too. So the guy filming wouldn't get kicked out, but maybe would have got some strange looks from the congregation.

New technique to make shaky cam videos stable

MaxWilder says...

No, there's a difference between real cinematography and "look at this cool camera work! Don't you feel immersed?" Zoomy-cam is just the logical extension of shaky-cam, where the director thinks jostling the picture is the same thing as providing excitement for the viewer. Maybe it fools you, but to me all it does is throw me out of the story.

There is no fucking reason for shaky "hand held" shots unless we are supposed to be watching footage from a camera that is part of the story, such as documentary footage. If there is no camera in the story, then the viewer should not be "aware" of the camera. The footage should be clean and semi-omniscient, like the narrative voice in a book. Novels are not presented in broken cursive with bad spelling, and movies should not be presented in unstable hand held shots.

If you need a lot of flexibility in an action shot, get a steadycam. It provides a sense of immediacy and proximity, and doesn't aggravate. Use it!

Looking forward to the new iPhone 3GS (Blog Entry by dag)

I'm all for usability and the interface etc. And I would actually like an iPhone... However.

I too have a Viewty, and know that it's a clunky ol' thing. BUT. I like to spend sweet f all on my phones, and this costs me nothing on a $20p/m plan, so it fits that bill.

Then it can play Divx... nice, I put a bunch of movies and things on it, and can distract the kids when waiting at the hairdressers or the like.

Then the camera... seriously, I've seen photos from the iPhone, they are god awful, really, that is such a shite camera. The Viewty is no camera substitute by a long shot... but it takes nice photos and great videos, and man the 120fps video is fun. Having said all that... it really is a clunky little bastard of a phone but I really like it, it works for me.

So I laugh when Apple fanbois go apeshit when they announce it has a 3Mp camera and oooh... video and oooh MMS. Like, things that pretty much every other phone has had for years.

But... like I said, I would like one, I love how they feel and work, I love the apps... I just don't love the fact that they seriously treat inclusions that are quite low end as the second coming of Christ... gives me the irates.

Everyone I have ever known who is homeless, who is not completely insane, or drugged up , owns a cell phone, and has a pre-paid plan. The fact that you can't buy a phone that's only a phone any more means that having a camera on your phone has not been a sign of status for at least a couple of years. I still have my pre-paid phone from when I was homeless about 6 years ago, $5 a month and it still works fine (but no camera).

Girl jumps in front of soldier to avoid shots into crowd

This is a brave thing to do, but I think it would be a hell of a lot braver if she was indeed Palestinian. I'm guessing if she was Palestinian and there was no camera she'd be a statistic in seconds.

Still a very brave thing to do though, and probably far more than I'd have the balls to do.

At the end of the day that's a real gun she's stood in front of and no matter what, that takes guts.

Prodigy - Voodoo People

alien_concept says...

No it's not new, it was the original video Amazing isn't it!

<edit> Ok, I knew it wasn't new,and i'd seen it before but this is why, you're so right, there were definitely no camera phones in '94!

wiki:A music video was produced for Pendulum's remix of "Voodoo People", directed by Ron Scalpello. It is based on a scene from the Spanish movie Intacto, a film themed around luck and games of chance. The video was filmed in Romford Market in London, England.

The video features several people racing blindfolded, with their hands bound. Several members of the band were spectators in the video, while the winner of the race was Sharky, a former member of The Prodigy who left shortly after the band formed.

Zero Punctuation Review: Alone in the Dark

budzos says...

I'm currently slogging through Alone In The Dark, although I haven't played it in a couple days. I played the first two games back when they came out. It's true, this game is not a true sequel to Alone In The Dark.

He never refers to the most annoying thing in the game: you are required to shift between 1st and 3rd person viewpoints constantly. Half the time the game does it for you without warning. The control is terrible in both viewpoints, and there is no camera control in third person. The game will also sometimes arbitrarily and without warning place the camera in a fixed remote viewpoint that's really confusing and also moves differently from the other two modes. This leads to a lot of falling off cliffs. You also will often find yourself wondering why you can't do something, only to realize you need to switch viewpoints.

There's also no way to skip the constant cutscenes.

I only keep playing it because the graphics and sound are decent and like Yahtzee says there are moments of brilliance.

I haven't skipped anything yet either, although I've been tempted. I actually like the driving sections.

I'd love to get a modern update to "Ecstatica". Anyone play that back in the day?
