Watchmen - Adapting The Unadaptable

Jinx says...

I enjoyed the movie. I read the book first, but only because I saw the trailers and wanted to see the movie, but I was advised to go to the source first. Perhaps because it was all fresh to me etc, that when I saw Zac's "moment montage" I was able to fill in the gaps.

I guess it depends on your definition of adaption. I feel that implicit in adaption is transformation or evolution. The story is in the telling no? Can you cut the story out, leaving behind all context, and still call it "Watchmen"?

The homage to Batman's suit is perhaps not literally true to the source material, but I think in some ways it is kind of true to the spirit of it. Here's Watchman, the graphic novel, was playing with our preconceptions of what makes a superhero comic book. Perhaps Snyder's intention was to use motifs of superhero movies in the same way Watchmen used preconceptions of its medium. maybe.

I disagree that it cannot be adapted to film. It could be done with a director that can function in a storytelling environment, which Snyder simply cannot do. The problem with Snyder was covered very well here recently, *related=http://videosift.com/video/Nerdwriter-Fundamenal-Flaw-Zack-Snyder-Batman-v-Superman
He was exactly the wrong director to have film this. I would have went with Del Toro or Whedon, but even they have their flaws.

Now, if the question is, can an adaptation be done that Alan Moore will feel 'suits' his vision? Probably not. He is an artist, in very good ways, but also in some very bad ones. He has a specific idea of how his creation must flow, which means he will never be satisfied with a medium outside of the graphic novel or comic.

Personally, I think one of the few un-adaptable works would be Gaiman's Sandman, but that's just my opinion.

Everything You Need To Know About Anal

Yeah, I agree exactly. As a somewhat related example, I just finished reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson. In truth, it could actually make a pretty interesting and exciting sci-fi film, but it would lose virtually everything that made it a good novel (for the most part, Stephenson can get a little self-indulgent in his dialog). If you took the roughly 1000 page long book, and stripped out everything you couldn't put in a film without it becoming extraordinarily long and tedious, you'd maybe be left with about 150 pages. It could be a great film, and it would fit the three act motif, but it just wouldn't be Anathem.

That's sort of what led me to think of Neuromancer. There's lots of good, heady sci-fi there, but it's all expressed in events, action, and good but concise dialog (and there are, quite distinctly, three acts). Like all adaptations, sure some things would be lost, but the important concepts would still be there. Anathem, on the other hand, would just be a superficial event-driven story. Similarly, Snow Crash would just come across as ridiculous (though I'd be interested to see what Terry Gilliam could do with it).

@AeroMechanical, actually I'm with you. I seriously doubt the Foundation stories would work on film or even in a long form mini series.

The problem with a lot of sci-fi literature is that it doesn't conform to the standard 3 act movie structure. There's often an ambiguous ending which doesn't neatly resolve (like real life!). Asimov, Clarke, Banks, Reynolds, Morgan (to name a few of my favourites) fit this pattern.

There are two things happening, IMO:
1. The journey really is more important than the destination. It's about the story, not the outcome.
2. In some cases, story above character (Asimov and Clarke in particular). The idea is more important than the puny humans caught up in it.

Both of these are hard for studio execs (and to be fair, mainstream audiences) to grasp.

Giant 15-inch long goldfish caught in lake

Should cost him about $15 bucks an inch to have Goldy there mounted-He oughtta have the mold cast and do a gold-leaf with goldfish orange motif.... give the thing a fat grill encrusted with some diamonds....Plaque could read: The Pimp of Lake St. Clair

Deconstructing opening scene of Once Upon a Time in the West

chingalera says...

Agreed, love the flick-Seriously can't stand that frikkin' motif that Leone used for that harmonica Bronson carried around with him to constantly play that tired riff....Ugh!

Best scene, opening scene. Buildup to, and throw-down at the train station.

"Looks like we didn't come with enough horses."

(shakes head) "You brought two too many."

Let's talk about *Promote (Sift Talk Post)

PlayhousePals says...

I resemble that remark. I too miss the cheats and have no idea how to do them. I'm self taught ... no computer training ... just flyin' by the seat of my pants all these years [and they are purdy darn threadbare let me tell you]. There are sure to be those who hate it, but I like to type as I would speak. So sue me

I never minded having 10 promotes on display and I do feel cheated with just three. I am impressed with the comments others here have made regarding the more in-depth analysis of the Quality and Promote issues and have nothing more to add of any benefit.

Personally, I like the new [dark] colors and have no trouble viewing with the exception of my green PlayhousePals against a green comment box background [Sifty!]. I did have to change my colors around after the update as my fuchsia motif just wasn't suitable anymore.

I have no trouble with the access to comments and enjoy most of the new icons [once I got used to them]. I find them to be concise and unobtrusive. I do have some difficulty with the smallness of the channel designations however. They are difficult to make out.

Whatever happens, I'm glad to have found enjoyment here and want to thank you all for the opportunity, hospitality and, from a good many of you, encouragement and support. I hope I haven't stepped on many toes or offended too many sensibilities thus far ... that would be unfortunate, but ... what the hey? Live and let live, right? You're kind of stuck with me

And for the HTML impaired, I miss the cheats at the top of the comment box. I don't know how to just strike out the first line when I added the second.

I'd change the cabinet meeting room a bit.

Woman hearing herself for the first time (second ear)

Jinx says...

I like them. None is fine too, but if you're going to get tattoos I say go big or go home. Pay more money for somebody decent, and get something unique on your sleeves. Unoriginal motifs/stamps are ugly as fuck. Much better to get a piece of artwork, even if its style is a little cliche'd.

Her speech impediment seems more pronounced in this video for some reason. Still remarkably articulate for somebody that hasn't been able to hear for most of their life.

Hear is to appreciating what you've got.

Thought it would be more fitting with the Ghetto motif. Like the reasoning behind the gangster tab...

Well, I concede defeat my friend. Well played. There is no arguing with the spelling comments.
