Trump China

Retroboy says...

The world today seems absolutely crackers,
With nuclear bombs to blow us all sky high.
There's fools and idiots sitting on the trigger.
It's depressing and it's senseless, and that's why...
I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're always friendly, and they're ready to please.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
There's nine hundred million of them in the world today.
You'd better learn to like them; that's what I say.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They come from a long way overseas,
But they're cute and they're cuddly, and they're ready to please.

I like Chinese food.
The waiters never are rude.
Think of the many things they've done to impress.
There's Maoism, Taoism, I Ching, and Chess.

So I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
I like their tiny little trees,
Their Zen, their ping-pong, their yin, and yang-ese.

I like Chinese thought,
The wisdom that Confucious taught.
If Darwin is anything to shout about,
The Chinese will survive us all without any doubt.

So, I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're wise and they're witty, and they're ready to please

Arizona Rattlers Football-Dancing Player

bareboards2 says...

I honestly don't understand your point about Cindy. I don't get the feeling that she is dancing off the pounds. This feels like a BBW jerk off vid. They do exist.

If she is celebrating her own sexuality, good for her.

As for your claim that I am blind to representations of women in the media, you have said that to me before. You were wrong before, you are wrong now. There are numerous studies that show that women are underrepresented in the media. There are numerous studies proving that women's movie and TV careers are severely circumscribed when they reach a certain age. Without breaking a sweat, I can name a dozen sitcoms starring fat men with slender to average wives and two that star(red) women of size -- Roseanne and Mike and Molly. And this just sitcoms.

I know there is nothing I can say about this subject, because I believe you to be willfully blind about the facts.

And yes, as I always do, I acknowledge that the unreasonable standards of beauty that women are held to is happening more and more to men. I do not think that is a good thing. It is a spreading cancer. Ignoring that is happens to women doesn't stop it happening to men.

And I hate Magic Mike I and II. Stupid plot, stupid dialogue, boring as shit and not enough dancing . The Full Monty now? OH yeah! Fat blokes, skinny blokes, gay blokes, old blokes, ginger blokes..... That is a movie that celebrates life and interpersonal relationships.

So, you would have been OK if someone talked about the ugly, fat woman dancing with (or without) the over sexualized male cheerleaders? ;-)
Like her....

I don't think that's right.

On a more serious note, if you are only seeing perfect, thin, over sexualized women in the media, I think that's on you for only choosing those types of programs.
EDIT: Oh, and the movie you want is Magic Mike.

Yeah, well, when you quote Groucho (after not quoting Groucho) from a not so well read book passage where he's not being funny, and it sounds much more like someone complaining about not understanding my classic Groucho MOVIE quote rather than quipping, it's easier to miss. I'm not ashamed. ;-)

I looked it up, and from the moment I picked up his book until I put it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it.

Chicken Lady: Homecoming - Kids in the Hall

I think improv and sketch comedy groups are all springboards from stage to radio, radio to stage, stage yo television, radio to television, television to radio, to other television and ultimately the big screen. Any good YouTube sketch comedy? I've yet to really explore that, I guess Vine is funny sketch comedy. A bit too fast, over and done for me though. Cyanide and Happiness count? Web comics? Cracked? Anyway, on to television, which remains the fascination:

The first years of SNL are phenomenal with Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, and Gilda Radner. And before that a lot of those guys were together on the National Lampoon Radio. (Speaking of radio, Dr. Demento?)

And there's also SCTV, jesus -- John Candy, Martin Short, Harold Ramis, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, and Joe Flaherty. Flaherty's vampire killed me as a kid. So funny, but really I haven't watched it since I was a youngster.

When I was growing up PBS played a lot of BBC television. Benny Hill amongst them, such a naughty show. I think I was barely allowed watch. But I enjoy the show as much as its mostly about old horny men and women with big tits.

What do I think about Upright Citizen Brigade? I would choose to be an Agent of U.C.B. before S.H.I.E.L.D. Great as both an improv group and sketch comedy for television. Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz are awesome, and I love them on SNL as well. Assssscat

Cast transfers, right? Sketch comedy groups are like sports teams. Mark McKinney on SNL, etc. Daily Show anchors from Upright Citizens Brigade. SCTV to SNL, etc. Every sketch comedy floods into SNL. Did you watch Nickelodeon's All That? Kenan and Kell.

Mr Show is on my to watch list. I love David Cross in his stand up, as Tobias Funke on Arrested Dev, and as Todd Margaret, which is fucking RIDICULOUS if you haven't seen it. It's not sketch comedy but it might as well be. It's like a British comedy with brash Americans thrown into the mix. Chaos ensues and many, many, many laws are broken, including the usage of weapons of mass destruction and murder. Dark comedy.

Oh, I know a good dark sort of sketch comedy: The League of Gentlemen? It's sort of like if Simon Pegg produced Monty Python. They say things like "Rape our dead mouths". Psychopaths, murderers and crossdressers.

Now that we've ventured off the beaten path, what are your thoughts about the short run comedy central show Stella? Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain. All three from a funny sketch comedy series called the State. I think I've sifted or promoted some sketches from that series.

And I can't not mention MadTV, you know what? Uh uh, a list about sketch comed without MadTV, ridiculous. I'm running out of steam though, because I'm typing too much, but MO Collins, Orlando Jones, Bobby Lee, Phil LaMar (who does DC comics cartoon voice over work), Aries Spears, and Will Sasso. Damn.

And lest we forget (Thanks, Rudyard), Little Britain -- Britain, Britain, Britain, if it weren't for Little Britain I would scarcely know of the country.

I'm sure I've left off some other great sketch (In Living Color!!), but these came to mind and as I started to think of my favorite cast members and comedians, I began to realize how they all fit in the grand scheme of things. I'm going to watch some Fire Marshall Bill clips now.

Excellent points. If you look back over the entire SNL catalog there is a lot of great stuff. It's also been on for 40 years or so so yeah there should be. I think SNL is used as a springboard for a lot of comedians and writers. For example, Larry David was a writer.

What do you think of Upright Citizens Brigade or Mr. Show? I looked up a list of sketch comedy shows and it reminded me that the Chapelle show was pretty great. I never thought of Benny Hill as a sketch comedy show (it is), but I loved it as a kid. Probably too slapstick for me now.

Craig Ferguson - 9/11

Retroboy says...

Michael Palin of Monty Python fame did something similar, as did Billy Connelly, who did an awesome tour of almost the entire coast of Canada. Seems to be a "thing" among comedians from the isles, and Craig is certainly the type of spontaneous and interesting guy that could pull this off very very well.

Well worth watching: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Connolly:_Journey_to_the_Edge_of_the_World
and (now 25 years old!)

EDIT: Game show, huh? Waste of talent in my book, but probably VERY easy money for Craig and a very controllable schedule for filming. Ah well.

Boys React to Playing Dungeons and Dragons With Girls

SDGundamX says...

God, that dungeon master’s answer was terrible.

The job of the DM is first and foremost to make sure everyone is having fun. If you’re not fudging rules (or making them up on the fly) for the sake of dramatic storytelling then you’re not really getting into the spirit of D&D, in my opinion.

I suspect the girls' reaction to the game has a lot to do with how the game was run. Back when I was those kids age, we were mainly playing dungeon crawls looking for epic loot--basically a “Monty Haul” campaign. The role-playing aspect was minimized while combat was heavily emphasized. The story only existed to drive us to the next combat encounter. Sure there might be some girls into that (just like in video gaming there are some girls into hardcore FPS games) but I wonder if these particular girls would have been as okay with D&D if the game were run that way.

Zero Theorem Official Trailer #1 (2014) Christoph Waltz HD

noims says...

I really liked the film, but it's important to note that Gilliam directed this, but did not write it.

I was at an interview where Gilliam said that when he read the script he knew that the writer has closely studied everything Gilliam, and knew how to write a Terry Gilliam script.

The problem isn't that no one could fill the space that Gilliam will leave, it's that anything filling that space will inevitably be put down as 'trying too hard to be like Terry Gilliam was'.

The same can be said for Monty Python in general.

artician said:

Terry Gilliam needs to make as many films as possible within his lifetime, because once he is gone there will be no one who can possibly fill that space.
(maybe Spike Jonze?)

The Monty Hall Problem

Zawash says...

It's a fun little problem, complicated by the fact that the gameshow host does not choose a door randomly.

If the host did choose a random door of the two remaining, then it would mean that 1/3 of the time he would pick the car, and you would walk away with nothing. If that was so, then your chances of winning the car would increase from 1/3 to 1/2 if he picked a goat, and it wouldn't matter if you switched or not, and your chances would go to 0 if he happened to open the door with the car.

But - the host does not choose randomly - if you did not choose the car, then he will pick the door with the remaining goat. And thus - your chances increase from 1/3 to 2/3 if you switch.

My favourite explanations of the problem:
- Do you want to pick one door, or do you want to pick both the two others? You get both the others if you swap.

- @plastiquemonkey's explanation - you'll pick goat A, goat B or the car - you only lose if you picked the car first, which is 1/3.

And *promote the good old probability problem.
