Any gamers in the crowd? (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

rebuilder says...

PC games, although lately I find it hard to justify the waste of time. Not because I'm particularly busy, but simply because games nowadays seem too boring to play. I loved old-style western RPGs - started with Baldur's gate, but I think Planescape was my favourite, and I really liked Arcanum as well, despite its flaws. Played the usual Quakes etc. of course, but around Quake II it started to get a bit old and I never got into the Unreal Tournament and quake III side of things. I think the last game I really got into was Battlefield 2, but that kind of died down after a while - the gameplay got repetitive, people got routines, it just got boring. Played TF2 a bit, appreciate the design, and it's fun, but somehow I can't bring myself to start the game up. I liked Oblivion, although the writing is terrible, the art is uninspired and the gameplay is somewhat clunky. It was free enough. Mostly I play Armed Assault 2 now, or a heavily modded version anyway, in co-op with a bunch of people.

Mass Effect was mentioned here, I played it, hated it. The story is something dug up out of a pile of discarded B-scifi scripts, the gameplay is repetitive and the design is generic. I thought Bioshock looked ugly, they butchered the art nouveau aesthetic by making it too clunky and thick-set. Crysis was actually surprisingly fun for what it was, although too long considering the gameplay remained the same throughout.

I've really enjoyed the Telltale episodics - Sam & Max started out quite good and got brilliant on the 2nd season. The Monkey Island games look promising, the first episode was decent enough. New ep should be out soon...

I've always been a PC gamer too, but I've played a lot less since I started sifting. Go figure. I thoroughly enjoy the Half-Life series including Portal, but in my heart I'll always be a point-and-click adventure gamer. I've played most of what LucasArts published back when they were good, such as Full Throttle, The Dig and every Monkey Island game. I'm excited about the new Monkey Island game that's coming up, and the remake of the first game. And Grim Fandango is obviously a huge favourite, as you can tell from my avatar.

The last decade has been a sad period for the adventure genre, but Telltale Games has some good stuff going now, i.e. with the new Sam&Max episodes. I also loved The Longest Journey and its sequel Dreamfall, and am eagerly awaiting a new sequel. (Do you hear that, Funcom?) I'm a sucker for good storytelling, so I might expand my horizon to Mass Effect, which I've heard good stuff about.

Another good adventure game that I think has been overlooked is the Bladerunner game from 1997. It captures the mood from the movie brilliantly, and was very replayable due to the non-linear storyline.

A few years ago I bought a PS2 solely to be able to play Guitar Hero, and I got to be rather good at it. But I haven't played it since GH3 now, and I am a bit rusty. After I bought the console my flatmate pressured me into trying Final Fantasy 10, and I enjoyed it for a while until the grinding part became too pronounced. I might continue it some day though. I also bought Bioshock when it came out, but I haven't gotten very far, as I found the character building stuff annoying. I have promised myself to play through it, though.

Other highlights from my gaming career: Diablo 2 and the expansion, the single player campaign of Starcraft and the expansion, Jedi Knight (aka Dark Forces II) and its sequels, Tie Fighter, Carmageddon, Interstate '76, and Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.

What at E3 are you most excited about? (Videogames Talk Post)

Since I'm a huge fan of old-school adventure games (Lucas Arts in particular), I'm definitely going to have to go with the two new Monkey Island games, even though I'm not crazy about the art style in either of them.

Otherwise I'm pretty hyped about Alan Wake, Brutal Legend, Left 4 Dead 2 and the two new Mario games.

Honestly, nothing at all.

I found AC repetitive as hell and I don't see the gimmick of flying or dual hidden blades being of any real significance to the gameplay.

Don't own a console so I can't really be excited about God of War, Galaxy 2, or Final Fantasy 'whatever number they're up to now'.

Modern Warfare 2 is intriguing and will no doubt have a compelling but all too predictably short single player but I'm kind of pissed off from initial reports that they won't really be changing much in the way of multiplayer besides changing some guns. Perks will remain the same except for eavesdrop as far as I've heard and that's just really a silly move when some of them are either just badly conceived ideas, or are plain out useless.

Can't really get excited about motion control technology until I see it implemented into an actual triple-A title in a workable way. The tech demos, especially Sony's, which actually showed off a live demonstration rather than showing off 'hard to believe this would actually work in real life' video footage a la Microsoft, was pretty interesting.

Monkey Island SE looks like something to put on the to play list, although I don't know what to think about the episodic sequel yet.

Also, Deus Ex 3 didn't make a showing which probably says it'll be ages before its release sadly.

Tales of Monkey Island -- NEW Monkey Island game!

They REALLY missed the boat on the graphical style didn't they? The essence just isn't there. The cartoony style's just missing for me when you compare it to the later MI's. Guybrush's voice isn't the same (which could be forgiven, but it all alienates me), the slapstick moments lack something, the jokes aren't funny, a lot of the scenes look really empty..

I sound like a fanboy, but i'd hate them to ruin MI I hope it's traditional monkey island goodness because i miss games like that.

I'm not excited at all. Monkey Island 4 was horrible, and this looks like it's going on the same path.

The first game was excellent (How appropriate, you fight like a cow!), and the second was nice. The third was amazing (You don't need to see my identification. I'm not the pirate you're looking for).

If they won't stop trying to 3D-ify these games, I'm going to put them in my Matrix category, and pretend anything beyond The Curse of Monkey Island doesn't exist.

Woohoo! It looks to be a straight port of the original game, but they kept the voice actors from Curse of Monkey Island. I agree with you, though - they should have used the cartoon version of Guybrush.

Yes, yes, yes and more yes.

As I watched the enormous hype engine rumbling along for LBP, I noticed that by far the main thing they were spruking was the ability to make your own levels, and I saw very, very little in regards to what there was of an actual game. I thought 'meh, like I can be friggen bothered to make my own levels'.

Then the game came out and all the reviews said 'yeah, the single player game is very short, but then you can make your own levels'... to which I thought 'meh, I can't be bothered... AND I have had plenty of experience with user created content in the old days of doom, quake etc. and yeah, there were a few good ones, but I DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR WISH to wade through the crap for a few good ones that in themselves are usually only 'good' and not 'great' and just argh'

I predicted it all before it came out that people would initially get really excited about creating their own levels but this would quickly peter out because they realised it was HARD to actually make something good, and so the longevity of the game would be... oh... SHORT.

I'm not a huge fan of multiplayer either... I like games that are lovingly crafted to give an experience and a story. I LOVED Bioshock for this very reason. I used to LOVE Adventure games (Monkey Island et al) for the same reason... I want to move my way through a crafted experience, NOT be at the whim and fancy of other people who also are not talented enough to be employed as a professional game designer.
