Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an Academy Award-winning 2004 romance film by Michel Gondry that uses a science fiction element to explore the nature of memory and love. The film has developed a cult following and was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2004.

The film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet and features David Cross, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson and Elijah Wood.

It opened in North America on March 19, 2004. The film has consistent high rankings in the IMDB's Top 250.

The movie's title is taken from a few lines from the much longer poem Eloisa to Abelard by Alexander Pope:

i watched this movie once, and was maybe a bit overwhelmed. i was thinking too much, and nobody around me wanted to hear my rebuttals.

i read a fantastic conversation in SEED magazine between Michel Gondry and a sleep/dream research at Harvard. one point the researcher brought up was that dreams tend to lack the temporal information of our lives and our stories when we're awake.

"i was eating a sandwhich and then my friend came in and we watched tv, then we went outside and drove to the park, then..." this is a conscious story you might tell---- but instead dreams wander between somehow related memories, like "i was eating a sandwhich but the bread was moldy, and i was at school, and the walls were all worn and tattered, and there was a war going on and the area was being bombed, so i ran and ran through the building and then i slipped in some blood and michel gondry was there laughing at me..."

this comment is put here to remind everyone that michel gondry is the famous french director of music videos for bjork, daft punk, and the chemical brothers. he directed "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind", which is beautiful. he also directed "the science of sleep", which was released this year. i haven't seen it yet but really want to. his work is full of clever editing tricks and visual effects.

Brilliant work by Michel Gondry (of course) where he constantly changes the perspective of a scene - well watch it and you'll see what I mean.

this was done by michel gondry. i think the trick is that the camera is above the windows and everyone inside is lying on their backs on the "floor" of the building.

I love the way it loops around and continues to build – visually. It is one of many music videos featured on the “The Work of Director Michel Gondry” DVD. There are seven directors in the series.
