Understanding Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"

BSR says...

Actually, I see it as a message to those who must navigate their world while suffering the pain of a lost loved one.

This is wonderful. But. It's more of a eulogy for Pink Floyd than a critique or analysis of the song.

I love it. But it's the weakest in a fantastic series.

But. This and its predecessors have definitely convinced me that I want a subscription to Nebula for Christmas. A thank for a job well done. My attention is limited, but I can see myself spending a bit less time here on the sift than I have, just because the sift has been so good.

Let's see. I'm not leaving you all. At all. Let's see.

The lyrics has *wheels and lost *love, the video is a bit strange, not connected to the awesome lyrics, and the song itself is *quality all the way. This Cake is no lie.

The Rural Alberta Advantage "Two Lovers"

calvados says...

This should've been higher up, but better late than never:

http://lyrics.wikia.com/The_Rural_Alberta_Advantage:Two_Lovers

Two lovers stuck in a sweet embrace,
Hoping to never move or change,
In the lost love and dust of a summer home,
Two people growing up and getting old.

And in the light of a thousand eyes,
I never want to lose you tonight.
And all the lovers are civilized,
But they'll never be the one just to hold you tight.
And if I ever hold you again,
I'll hold you tight enough to crush your veins.

I hope your heart's good and strong,
If you find yourself in my arms.
I hope your heart's good and strong,
If you find yourself in my arms.

Two lovers stuck in a sweet embrace,
Hoping to never lose the race,
As the wind travels into the little bones,
From a mouth speaking screaming in hushed tones.

And if I fly away to the coast,
Your face it haunts me more than most.
And if I ever hold you again,
I'll hold you tight enough to crush your veins.
And you will die and become a ghost,
And haunt me 'til my pulse also slows.

I hope your heart's good and strong,
If you find yourself in my arms.
I hope your heart's good and strong,
If you find yourself in my arms.
I hope your heart's good and strong,
If you find yourself in my arms.

Michael Moore on Afghanistan: Get Out and Apologize

blankfist says...

I can't believe I'm agreeing with Michael Moore, but here I am. I hope Obama is listening.

To think Afghanistan has a working, representational government is fallacious. And rebuilding is probably impossible without big business opportunists making the whole process financially advantageous and without the people relinquishing some of their dominion.

I say the US government gets out of Iraq and Afghanistan. I say the US government apologizes. I say none of us pay for it, because it wasn't me or you that fucked this up; it was bad policy makers. I'd like to see the Bush Administration and the Obama Administration get on their knees and kiss some dick for this. They can start with those families who lost loved ones because of that damn occupation. They can then move to the people who were displaced because of it. Then they can move to the tax payers who were forced to pay for it.

When they're done with the millions of dick kissing and bukkake facing, I want them to look like a glazed donut. In the eye? Yes we can.

Beautiful human beings (Happy Talk Post)

gwiz665 says...

I think I'm pretty in my pretty pink dress when I look in the mirror.

Other than my enormous narcissistic ego, there are many sifters who I'd like to consider friends, or you know as much friends as you can be on a website (that's not adultfriendfinder).

alien_concept is my long lost love, stoved away in her British castle somewhere, and some times when I lean in to the wind, I think I can hear her rocking out to Muse, hair down and horns up. Also she's a terrific sifter and awesome person.

schmawy is a guy I wanna give a hug and buy a beer. He's just so damn friendly - there's gotta be an angle!

I miss UsesProzac, because we were always pretty chummy (we were stalking each other secretly, or not so secretly). I have a feeling she'll be back one day once her spawn arrives, and hopefully she'll be friendlier to her otherwise sworn enemies. (Lord knows mommies are less ferocious than nonnies.. right? Right??)

Which brings me to thepinky, who I'm glad to have around just to stir up some shit and to have an earnest discussion with once in a while. Also, she's the baby, gotta love her.

The norwegian boys, haldaug and ornothoron, with their gum-drop smiles and marzipan houses have been presences on the sift lately.

Their otherwise troll-like kinsman Rasch187 is a huge pillar of the sift and is our resident necromancer, reviving dead videos everywhere. And even if we butt heads once in a while, he great around here.

Peggedbea is a gal with spunk, who says what on her mind - we need more of this in the comments and talks. She's also adorable. And I'm going to visit her in TX this summer, which can only end in tragedy.

The usual suspects, Kronosposeidon, Blankfist and Rottenseed are also impossible to miss around here. They are the easy targets for our thread jacking (and other jacking) jokes, but they are formidable presences around here too. They all give and take a lot of ass gravy, and I would drink a beer with any one of them. John, Heath and Jive Mittens, I salute you.

DFT and issy are always around when miaws are heard. Furries both, I'm sure of it.

arvana's our kind-hearted nature guy. I don't think I've ever seen an angry comment from this dude. I suppose he's become a reasonable adult now that he's cut his hippie hair (yeah, I remember).

Netrunner and mintbbb are also excellent people. NR is our primary source of politico stuffs and mint is all over the place - prolific is a good label.

Oh, Berticus is pretty much identical to myself, which is AWESOME. You all need to learn interests from this man - Arrested Development is the best live-action comedy show on the planet.

I'm forgetting people, but I want to save my Canadian sweetheart for last - NicoleBee is my nerdly counterpart who first really caught my attention, when she tried to summon an elder god on my profile. Those are some serious nerd-points right there, and I would give her my heart, if I didn't know she'd use it for some sort ritual in the Canadian woods. ♥

The Reason for the Gaza War

Asmo says...

>> ^rightwinger:
rougy - so the way the Palestinians have bombed this generation of Israelis is ok, right? As long as the Palestinians are fine, all is well.

How do people not get it...

It all escalates. I imagine there are thousands of stories on both sides of the Gaza strip of people who have lost loved ones to this moronic competition. I've seen many news stories through the years of the Israeli tanks killing civilians on their sorties (or the jet fighters etc), and I've seen many stories of how the terrorists have claimed Israeli lives.

There is no right and wrong anymore. You could trace the conflict back to Moses invading and staking out Israel for the Jews back in biblical times and it wouldn't make a lick of difference.

Pointless war is pointless. Stop aiding both sides until they come to their senses.

Suicide Scene from Rules of Attraction

oxdottir says...

I hate this video as I have hated no other image I've seen online. I would rather watch tubgirl or goatsee than this. This is NOT a realistic portrayal of a romanticized act: just the opposite: it is a romanticized portrayal or a disgusting, degrading, tragic act.

People need to see mental illness? Maybe. People need to see a completely detached scene where a pretty woman goes gently into that good night with no panic, no second thoughts, no explanation? NOT BLOODLY LIKELY.

I doubt I am alone in having lost loved ones to suicide. Am I alone in knowing the statistics that say how much more likely suicide is in someone who has seen it or had a friend do it?

I voted yes on the movie about people jumping off the golden gate bridge, and that was tons of suicides, but they were in context, they were not romanticized, and many of the consequences to friends and family were discussed.

I see the sift as a place to archive the best of the visual web. I've even dumped my own vids when I thought htere was better available or it was something I wasn't proud of having up here. What's good about this? What thing did you learn? What experience does it explain?

Differences of opinion are good, but honestly, I have a much harder time dealing with people I otherwise like saying yes to this gratuitous, disgusting, nauseating, hurtful image than I do dealing with people who think the war in Iraq is rightious or who otherwise espouse political values I abhor: I see the reason for that. I see no reason at all for this. It isn't real. It isn't cautionary. It isn't in context. It's just pathetic.

I wasn't going to say any of this. I was going to leave it be, but I came back and read the new comments, and I couldn't keep it in longer.

I hope this video dies. I wish I could vote it down 7 times.

The Sundays - Summertime

Keith Olberman/MSNBC takes Anne Coulter apart

Cameron says...

I Believe the woman has a valid point that is someone who is directly affected by a tragedy such as the events on September the 11th will have a degree of amenity from objective debate and discussion due to the highly emotive nature of their opinion.

I direct example that validates this would be the reluctance of people to evaluate the events of September 11th with an open frame of mind. You would have to have a non emotive mind set to be able to evaluate something properly and then cross examine what u believe to be true ore false. It is human nature to blindly defend ideas that you hold strongly and emotively feel as part of yourself. I’m sure many of you will have Evan defended an idea that u know is wrong but u felt it was right Evan when an argument has moved to the point that you are categorically wrong and you know it , u will still stick to your guns in an attempt to save face.

To conclude although these people who have lost loved ones in Sep 11th have a valid opinion it would not be wise to use these opinions to directly affect a course of political action Instead to use opinions from people how have evaluated the facts of the event fully and then applied their experience to the problem.
