Who's the better actor? (User Poll by Throbbin)

Throbbin says...

>> ^rottenseed:
Every actor on this list except for De Niro has played the same character every movie they've been in. Now, all of these characters were well played, don't get me wrong, but De Niro has "experimented" the most with his roles. Clint would be 2nd on my list because he has a couple of atypical roles under his belt, but for the most part he plays a grizzled hard-ass.
But whyyyyyyyyyyyyy James Earl Jones? He is better as a voice actor. Why not Christopher Walken? That'd be a tough decision because you can't determine if he's a good actor or a bad actor or just crazy...but either way everybody loves him.

Like I admitted, maybe he was a poor choice. Next time, create your own damn poll. There's only room for 5 options.

I do love Raging Bull, Scarface etc. Pacino and De Niro are legends. No question about it. But they stopped making good movies. Morgan Freeman is great but he is very type cast imo. Gran Torino? Clint is still kicking ass. Polls like this are tough because they're all awesome.

also .. I think there at least a dozen other actors that should be in the list instead of James Earl Jones.

Guy Movies (Cinema Talk Post)

Drax,
I couldn't agree more about "The Hudsucker Proxy". I can't tell why people don't like this movie. I think it might just be hard to take in all the rat-a-tat, fast paced banter but this really is one of the Coen's gems.

However:
It's funny to me that I couldn't disagree more about "Event Horizon". It's just Hellraiser with a space ship for gad's sake. How is it that people can associate "pure chaos" with just chains and razorblades? It would seem to me that pure chaos would be just that: something that you couldn't possibly understand any part of. You wouldn't even fear it after you got there because it wouldn't make sense. After entering, no part of you would be in order anymore. Thus, you wouldn't really even exist.

It's just like that movie "Sunshine" that I was excited to see. Great initial concept and then all-of-a-sudden there's a freakish looking sunburned guy chasing people around with an electric scalpel. WTF? Isn't the initial concept, i.e.: falling into the sun, entering a reality of pure chaos scary enough without all the fish-hooks and blood spattered walls?

Anyway,
I think I agree with most of the suggestions above. Especially "Conan" or: The story of one young man's struggle against adversity in a harsh, unforgiving world and how he wrestles a giant snake and eventually cuts off James Earl Jones' head with his golden sword-phallus.

Advanced Search 101 (Sift Talk Post)

Thylan says...

Ok, so now you can search even without a term, but maybe you do know some of the terms you want to search for. Whats the best way to do this?

Well, to quote the advanced search page:

"Each term included by default. If searching with at least one term with 5 chars, these advanced search rules may be included:
• prefix term with minus (-) to exclude it
• prefix term with more-than (>) or less-than (<) to increase or decrease relevance • group multiple terms into a sub-query by surrounding them with parentheses ( and )
• surround one or more terms with quotes (") to search for exactly that text
• ex: "abc" -(yyy zzz) will find posts with exactly abc (not abcd) and not yyy nor zzz"

so, if one term (word) is atleast 5 letters long, you can play with a few extra commands.

If you want to search for a LolCat vid, involving a kidies swing, you might want to search for videos with the terms "Swing" and "cat". now, there are lots of cat videos. And only a few swing cat videos. So, if siftbot thought both terms were equally important, the vid you want might be low down in a long list. So, to make the "Swing" more important put the following in the box:

>Swing <Cat

Now lets say that there were more swing cat videos than you realized. Infact, theres so many out their that have horrid Dogs in them Ugh. You just know the vid you wanted didn't have dogs in it. So, you can exclude all dog videos from the search:

>Swing Now, supose you rememebr a phrase like James Bond, and you want to find "James Bond" vids, and not all vids involving James Earl Jones and Judy Bond. To do this, use quotes like:

"James Bond"

But, for that to be really powerful, the submitter would have had to include "James Bond", as a single tag.

In the end, we are at the mercy of the video titles (and using obscure and interesting titles gets them voted, which is bad motivation for clear video titles for searching) and the clarity and relivance of the tags. and " minds dont think alike, so the right tag can be hard to find.

Darth Vader is Insane... And Easily Surprised

doogle says...

Took me a while to figure out what this was - a cut from the movie? A spared scene? A practice run before voice-over? I don't think it was clear...

Perhaps the description should be clearer that this is a voice-over from another of James Earl Jones' movies. Or at least in the tags? "Darth Vader lines mash-up with Coming to America movie"?

upvoted anyway, and it's one vote away from the sift..! Ahaaaaa!
