Hundreds of Fast-Food Workers Strike for Living Wage

Lethin says...

i ran a rather succesful pizza franchise for a while. i was quite generous with my pay and even in a low-mid income pizza store, i could easily afford to pay $15/hr to all my staff (of 20). Tim Hortons (canada) sells enough volume of coffee at roughly $2 a cup (plus other things) to afford starting wages of $11/hr in my town (plus benefits like basic health care stuff/drug palns blah blah blah) and pay/hour only goes up from there.

big corps have the margins to support this, in theory based on experience, for most low level income areas (10-15k sales a week) have a 10-15% proft margin. thats a week. once the mortgages and other build loans are paid, a business runnings expenses half. and that margin doubles. so in practice, most major fast food chains could easily afford to pay more and the only people who suffer most is the top level. they would raise prices to make the same yearly income. so, yes, an economy could sustain and only really gain from paying its own employees more. happy employees at home means less drama and stress related "mishaps" (food industry is very stressful) in the kitchen, would in theory benefit the company.

primarily, the only real people to suffer is the top level. the guys that skim the left over (profit margin) after expenses are paid.

if a company raised its prices because its employees wanted more wages, and they actually did pay them more and treated them better, i would shop there more often as that is a business i want to succeed. but thats another issue altogether to discuss is the need for people to spend as little as possible, making places like walmart and black friday sales so succesful. in part, we are to blame for what is happening, but we do not ask those companies to treat their staff the way they do to achieve this goal.

um, also good for them, most of those franchises lost thousands in one day due to loss of sales. so remember that if you think this wasn't successful.

Crossroads Coffee Zombies Commercial

Sagemind says...

WOW - I've never seen this before but just yesterday I was thinking how great would it be if some coffee shop (Tim Hortons) made a commercial EXACTLY like this. It could have been a little longer but the exact concept I was thinking of. I felt like I just entered a weird Twilight Zone or something as I watched this.

Another example of goverment waste: plowing invisible snow

BoneRemake says...

You are a tool if you are under the guise this is training, if this was training they would be in their quad cab ford trucks, with driver and tim hortons coffee in hand, driving out the route prior to driving it while actually in the machine, in fact they would drive it for 3 days probably.

If they have the blades dropped and scratching up the pavement like they are they are "doing the job" not training.

This seems to me TO BE A COMPLETE WASTE, yes its true people this shit does happen, and how do they justify their budget ? by going out when there is no snow and dropping blades onto the pavement. Why ? because if they do not use up their budget they will more then likely not get the same budget next year.

This is just some asshats justifying their job by going out on the superiors orders.

When bullied kids snap...

Shepppard says...

My friends and I had fun in high school.

We didn't have many "Bullies" per sey, but there were a few groups of them here or there, and one friend in particular was an easy enough target because of how he looked. (He dressed in purple misfits plaid shorts, with a leather jacket, combat boots, and had a giant mohawk, etc.) and the way we diffused those situations were funny.

We were walking back to school one day from lunch, and these idiots decided they were going to throw a half eaten banana at us from their car. However, not one of them even seemed to be relatively aware of physics, so they decided to A) Speed up so it would hit with more force, then B) throw it at us AS they were passing us.
The banana missed us by 2 houses and when they confronted us at school we made fun of them so hard infront of a group of people that they just took off.

Another time (When he was alone) he was just walking the halls when their idiot ringleader was doing a science project (with a meter stick) and hitting people who passed by. He was walking up behind my friend and was winding up his swing when my friend just turned, pointed at his face (finger two inches from his nose) and just said "NO!" gave him a stupid look, and just walked away with the ringleader just standing there stupified.

My favourite (although, mean) situation though, was at an elementary school. To get to the plaza with the McD's, KFC, Tim Hortons etc. for lunch, you had to pass through an elementary school, and on the way back they were out for recess or something. So the two of us were just walking through shooting the shit with each other and minding our own business when the bell went and the kids started lining up to get back in.

One little idiot we passed by started saying "HA HA, LOOK AT THE ROOSTER! HEY EVERYBODY, LOOK AT THE STUPID ROOSTER" (because of the mohawk) I finally sanpped, dropped my backpack and started to charge towards the kid. He instantly looked absolutely terrified and raised his hand (wriggling fashion, to note that he REALLY wants attention) I came up to him, face to face, and just started giving him shit about "What gives you the right to make fun of people? He dresses the way he wants to, you dress the way you want to, keep it to yourself" etc. The teacher finally came out and said "What's going on here?" so I even told her "This kid here was making fun of my friend, I was having a discussion with him."

She actually thanked me and said "We're going to be having a discussion on this in class."

I've never wanted to get into a physical confrontation, my method of choice was to belittle the bullies. Granted, a lot of places this'll get you decked, but it worked for me as a way of non-violent confrontation.

In a perfect world, there'd be no bullies, and I'm one that advocates not using force, but there are unfortunate situations that do call for it. I feel for the big kid here, because he was put in a no-win scenario. He lets the little kid get away with it, or he gets in trouble for defending himself. I guess not everyone can be as lucky as I was.
