Shannon Sharpe on Trump, NFL and Protest

Jinx says...

An anthem that often has "brave" replaced with "chiefs". The flag that is worn as boxer shorts or used to sell cars. Good 'ol 'murican Paytrism.

Yah well, maybe there wouldn't be so much fuss if the POTUS wasn't trying to dictate to a company what their rules of conduct should be. NFL players aren't civil servants.

Unity by itself is no virtue. Nothing gets done by holding hands and singing some nationalist kumbayah. You sing your little song so you can feel like you are supporting vets while they come home from foreign lands and get...what? They can't pay their bills with your gestures.

Nothing to do about racism just good old American patriotism..

I can't go around wearing a Trump or Obama hat while on the job as I meet customers.... Company dictate rules of conduct. Politics do not belong in the work environment.

Trump is only properly pointing out how ungrateful some are by disrespect the very unity of America activity of standing for the National Anthem..

Sales of NFL tickets and clothing and ESPN ratings will dictate the true direction of this .

Yes We Can. Obama stories are shared. What a guy.

never going to happen.
the obama administration has been waging war against whistleblowers for 8 years.prosecuting more whistleblowers using the archaic "espionage act of 1917" to pursue and prosecute more whistleblowers than any other president in americas history COMBINED.

unless there is a massive public outcry to force the executive branch to pardon snowden,it is never going to happen.

but as long as we are making a wishlist to the fairy godmother of shit-that-is-never-going-to-happen,let me add to that list:

1.repeal the NDAA of 2017,which is an addon to the NDAA of 2012,which is a simply continuation of the MCA of 2006 (look em up folks, those "rights" you claim to have are really mere suggestion due to these abominations.

2.pursue and indict ALL wall street players who knowingly engaged in fraud and collapsed the global economy.strip them of all begotten gains to pay back the american people, and throw them in the most vile of maximum prisons (hopefully with a bunkmate nicknamed 'anal destroyer").

3.recind ALL expanded powers that the bush administration enacted (thanks to neocons addington and woo) and which the obama administration actually expanded even further, and NOW trump will be executive over the most powerful executive branch in american history .(this would be a nice one eh?).

4.have the DEA and ATF actually honor obamas original statement that his administration would not pursue federal law in regards to marijuana, mandated by referendums by the citizens of those states (to which he had promptly disregarded, and raided local dispenseries).

5.reduce americas prison population(2.4 million, largest on the planet) by pardoning the non-violent drug offenders, and disallowing companies like nike and apple to abuse prison labor (slave labor).

6.stop the practice of military intervention at the behest of corporations to exploit the poorest and most vulnerable.

7.stop the practice of regime change at the behest..oh this is becoming familiar...corporations wishing to exploit the poorest and most vulnerable for their resources.

8.and could we possibly,maybe..stop with targeted drone strikes? a.k.a "assassinations". how a constitutional law professor reconciles his law pedigree with his "value target tuesday" i.e:murder just boggles my mind.

man,i should stop.my wishlist is becoming to long..and depressing.

i voted this video up because i will not ignore that obama did some good, and even some great things during his presidency, but i also will not ignore his very disturbing failures.

and there are a LOT of disturbing failures.

so i will sit and hold hands and sing kumbaya as we all remember our very smart president, but let us not forget..this very same president expanded an executive branch that trump will be taking over the reigns very soon.

and on that note,i have to give him a failing grade.

For the curious, the flash at 1:52 says:
Some of you might be curious what attending bandcamp is like. Well let me tell you.

You're 12. You're playing in the cornet section. You've had a crush on Holly Willis for weeks now. But you notice her sneaking off with Chris Jones - the first violinist - one day and later at rehearsal they're holding hands.

So you start intentionally playing the wrong notes but everyone just thinks you're mentally ill and the conductor verbally destroys you in front of the entire orchestra.

I hope you're doing great, Chris Jones. I bet you work in IT now and you're rish, Chris Jones.

Fuck you, Chris Jones.

poolcleaner says...

Polyamorous feelings are hardly learned. You only like one person at any given time? Lies. Not even speaking about SEX, which always seems to be the trigger word for our collective fears. Why does it come down to sex? Most of my romance is asexual, y'all (society, the royal y'all) are oversexed because you're afraid of your feelings. Either you can't free your feminine self or your masculine self because you are afraid or embarassed, or lack the ability to think beyond that into nonbinary worldviews. Removing negative values from sexual acts so that they become naturally flowing, and not repressed sudden bursts of violence. Practice being asexual around people you're deeply attracted to. Treat them like *gasp* people.

Group hugs, anyone? Holding hands in prayer? I can't be the only one that feels that built in polyamorous tingle, can I? Sporting collisions? Animals born in litters crawling all over each other. Ain't sexual, is just a deep rooted desire to be among life close up and in that shit; protected and secure; loved. Any concert goers out there like getting close to the stage? That's a lot of sweaty people you're being sandwiched between. I know not everyone likes these situations, but it's enough latent desire, again not just for sex, but to be VERY close with more than one other person.

Haha... anyway! It's not all about dirty, sexual acts. If someone I hardly knew asked me or my wife to hang out and tried to have group sex, it wouldn't work anyway. Friendship and asexual romance are higher powers of coexistence anyway; more honest, less messy and ancient mammalian.

But... what is so wrong with bonds that form out of such natural human need beyond the twosome -- also think of all the lonely people out there who you're depriving of human touch, and just because you irrationally believe it's wrong. Shame on society. Shame.

Cops doing good deeds

Nephelimdream says...

This is all fine and dandy, and kudos to people who take time to help others, but in my experiences......cops can still go fuck themselves. Not to worry though lantern53, I've never dealt with you in uniform, as far as I know. I bet you're the bee's knees. I can't judge you there. Maybe I'll even polish up your badge for ya one day. Press your uniform. Tune up the ol' squad car. I just hope someone makes a video of it, and it's posted here. So we can all hold hands and sing kumbaya, while the siftbot joyfully sheds a single unifying tear.

Why can't white people stop the violence?

GenjiKilpatrick says...

So basically you want me to hold hands and sing hymns with a willfully ignorant racist?

Not likely to happen for either party here.

Like many, I'm pissed and angry about this topic
I'm here venting those frustrations.

If Bob wants to continue saying ignorant shit in a public forum..

..you can bet he'll get served when I show up to rebut that nonsense.

Secondly, I have absolutely no problem personally attacking Bob or Lantern or any other unapologetic racist because..

Bob isn't here to add to the discussion.

He's only commenting to gloat and confirm his own bias.

"See, I always told you niggers are violent criminals"

"See what happens when you let LIB-TARDS run a city!"

So yeah for those reasons, I think Palestine and Israel have an equally likely chance of agreeing & making friends.

Republican and Democratic 'leaders' sing 'we will overcome'

newtboy says...

I found it most odd that the republicans refused to sing, but were willing to stand there, sway, and hold hands. What's up with that?!?
I love the look on Bhoner's face, it's like he has no idea what's happening, he keeps looking for help from the crowd, and is surprised every time they sway away from him.

chingalera says...

JSing and Chaos made the two small leaps here that points to the interpreter as the responsible party to context. Meaning can be elusive to folks who have problems with critical thinking and with regard to 'racism' (the definition and intensity of this label range from arbitrary to anally-exacting considering the range of interpretation) there is no clear, consensual handbook...In the 00's, the word 'nigger' being so flagrantly abused and praised as it has become a filler-word in hip-hop and rap culture as well as a safe-haven for haters who love to toss the convenient label 'racist' around like skee-ball tickets, when they simply refuse to fucking think, or dislike someone, or are simply cunts, etc.

True racism exists but not on the scale imagined by the weak-minded and overly sensitive who both recoil from the very notion of certain words even existing (wouldn't the world be such a wonderful place if the word nigger did not exist and the world could all hold hands and blow soap bubbles and kiss puppy dogs?? Pretentious, American, WHITE PEOPLE have so abused both the concept and history of racism that the waters of it's essence have become murky. Chumps use the label 'racism' as if it were ranch dressing to refer to all manner of perceived evils of the world when their little cruise-liner of self-delusion drifts ever-so-slightly off course.

Is there any kind of god out there or not? At the end it doesn't matter. For me it's very interesting how much our prejudice influence our perception. If we wonna see evil in Romney or Obama, we do. We are masters in creating our own realities, sometimes for our good, sometimes not.
A bit similar story told by David Foster Wallace in a commencement speech. This particular story lasts 2 minutes. For me the whole speech is great.

What the hell kind of example is that ?

How is this video even remotely similar to a political example. wtf buddy.

Lets all drink some Chair Tea and hold hands. Break some of these perceptions.

Most people don't like gay people and you can blame gay people. If gay people acted like everyone else, in that they kept their private affairs private, most would have no trouble with them. It's when they parade down the street with red codpieces, or french kiss in front of children, or wear dogcollars with little metal studs, or fling semen from 2nd story windows...
that is the kind of thing that pisses people off. You don't see Neil Patrick Harris doing that, which is why he's so adorable.

You are a troll, yes?

Unless you live in a very rare kind of area (perhaps you moved into your city's gay especially felonious gay district without realizing it?), I have serious doubts that you've witnessed those kinds of actions when you haven't seen them among straight people. I've seen plenty of apparently straight people french-kissing in public in front of children and wearing studded collars. (I have yet to see anyone with a red codpiece outside of a Renaissance Festival or a play.)

Or perhaps your objection is that they "don't keep it in private," that they don't hide that they're gay. That they kiss their girl/boyfriend in public where you can see it, or hold hands in public, just the way that straight couples do.

People can dislike it all they want, but gay people, bisexuals exhibiting their same-sex attraction, and transmen and transwomen enacting their gender have as much right to the public space as you do.

So suck it.

ReverendTed says...

As an aside, I'm super excited about the inevitable outcome of this discussion, where we all hold hands and proudly proclaim that "We Solved Abortion!" It's gonna be so cool, guys. So cool.

@oritteropo
That's a very reasoned approach to the issue. (To me, it seems "mean" even earlier in development, but that's an individual value judgement.) Obviously "avoidance of meanness" isn't your entire justification, but setting the mark at "theoretical biological independence" hints at the underlying logic. On its face, it sounds like an extension of the "it's her body" argument, i.e. "It's her body...until the fetus doesn't need her anymore".

@packo @acidSpine
"I refuse to discuss this issue because Republicans\Christians are hypocrites" is a misdirection, and it's a dead-end. The argument is just as easily flipped: "Those liberals cry foul every time we drop a bomb on a terrorist, but they don't blink an eye killing unborn babies here at home," and it's just as fallacious that way.
BUT, it gives us both a common enemy: moral relativism. Moral relativism is why we need legislation, standards, and guidelines. Moral relativism is also where we dive into the "increase happiness/decrease suffering" balance that's frequently referenced in these debates.
Is it OK to kill an innocent person if that's what it takes to kill the terrorist mastermind who will kill (or incite the killing of) dozens later? What if it's five innocents? A dozen? What if we're only fairly certain he's a terrorist?
Is it OK to terminate a pregnancy (developing human, "kill a baby", etc) if it avoids the theoretical suffering of the mother and child later? Or if it avoids compounding the poverty crisis, or the healthcare crisis?
acidSpine, you claim this is "a moral issue, not a legislative one," but many moral issues get legislated because morals are obviously not enough by themselves, because perspectives and emotions cloud our judgement on moral issues. @VoodooV is right, we kill sometimes. Sometimes we feel it is necessary, and sometimes we feel it is the best, or at least most expedient course of action. Killing is a moral issue as well, but we legislate it because morals aren't adequate.
"Your honor, as you can see, the young Mr Jones was a dick. We have shown evidence of his abuse of animals and callous disregard for the emotions of others. These traits have been shown reliability to lead to sociopathic tendencies, child and spousal abuse, and criminal behavior in adulthood, so his death will lead to an overall decrease in suffering in the world. I have done us all a favor. You're welcome. The defense rests."
