"There is no longer any doubt..."

thinker247 says...

If Bush could apologize, I'd be utterly stunned. Mainly because he thinks he's on the side of righteousness, and history will view him as a magnificent and beneficent leader, so he sees nothing for which an apology is necessary. That is the gall of a dictator on his throne. I really hope Obama can change things. I am not entirely sure about it, but he cannot possibly be worse than Bush.

Oh, and you mentioned he's a President and not a King? Well, if were a King, he'd be on the downswing of a guillotine blade by now.

>> ^Farhad2000:
I read a very interesting article in Harpers the other day called "Democracy and Deference", about how people relate to power in the US, it featured an anecdotal story about Vietnam veteran Jim Webb meeting Bush, Webb has a son fighting in Iraq, Bush asked him about him, Jim said he wanted to get him out of Iraq, Bush said that he didn't ask him about that but about his son.
What followed next was a big media outrage about how rude Jim Webb was to President Bush in the Whitehouse questioning his decisions about Iraq! You simply do not question the president. Unquestionable loyalty is more important then rational dissent.
It then posed the same example with Powell and his presentation to UN, where the statesman part of Powell lost out to the loyal Soldier. Powell later said that even though he had grave doubts about the evidence against Iraq, he still went ahead with the presentation because he was loyal to the President.
When did this type of thinking evolve? The President is not a King, he is an elected official accountable to the population. The White house is rented out by the American people to him.
The parallels are stark when you comparing the US and UK political process, the UK populace believes it has an inherent right to meddle in politics, whereas in the US its more about trusting someone else to do the right thing.
You ever watch Tony Blair giving a press conference? The audience is always full of well informed people who ask challenging questions, who make the PM sweat, who press if the question is dodged, the PM then apologizes (OMFG) and tries to clarify.
Compare that to the US media circus of PR, where questions are always soft balled and there is a silly air of jolly good fun with funny quips, the seriousness is lost. The questions are prescreened, weeding out challengers and encouraging stupid expressions of admiration along the lines of "All my heroes are cowboys" to which there is thunderous applause.

Desire, Sex & Power in Music Videos

8422 says...

this type of stuff in not new it has been in human culture since people have been around... i would hesitate to blame it on media. the way that it is done is copied from media but the act its self has always existed. for example most society's have some form of execution hanging, guillotine, electric chair ext.. in the end its the same someone is punished with death. just like in this video the fact that these men sexually assaulted women the way that they see in the media dose not matter what matters is that the women where sexually assaulted...

i think in general the world is moving towards the better... for example if a prostitute got raped 50 years ago no one would care, if a prostitute get raped today its a different story (in most western country's). in almost every culture women where treated like property at one time or another, take a look at the United States women got their rights about 50 years ago...

i think its a good thing that music videos are the way they are its a fantasy, and if someone looks at the media and thinks its ok to act that way, then they are gone do it regardless of what they see, a privative ass hole dose not need the media to think its ok..

its just my view on the subject.

@castles:

They DID do a good job. Good job whatever the hell they wanted to do. Yea, it screwed up the nation. But the point is that they did a good job doing what they targeted to do. Unless of course, their opposition was too dumb to stop them (cough *democrats* cough!). Either way, they've proven to be 'better'.

When you have an important public execution at your hand, you'd get the best executioner in town to behead Marie Antoinette (i know it was the guillotine historically) . Yea cutting people's heads off is a terrible job. But if you're the execution-producer-guy, you'd get someone who's good at cutting people's heads off. You know what I mean?

If only they had democratic ideals, I'd say they would've made fine leaders. Get my point? Or are you too spiteful to give them any credit?

Kimbo Slice versus Ray Mercer

rembar says...

Mercer is not "one of the best". He had basically no training in grappling or MMA, meaning he was a can in this fight. Anybody who knew anything about MMA called the outcome of this fight as soon as it was announced. Hell, Mercer didn't even know enough pull guard when he hit the ground, he just flopped around like a fish out of water. Even when Kimbo got the guillotine, he caught it from butt-scoot, without leg control, and Mercer moved into the single worst position for himself. A one-stripe WB BJJer could have passed to side control with that weak-ass crap, but, unfortunately, Mercer doesn't have the skill of a one-striper.

Kimbo is a semi-decent boxer, with a modicum of grappling skills. Wow, a guy with a bit of grappling training took out a guy with no grappling training, how unexpected! Color me unimpressed. Kimbo's never going anywhere in good pro MMA. He's a sideshow, like the guys they have doing freak-show fights in K-1 Hero. He's Bob Sapp without the funny Japanese gameshow appearances. The only reason I don't think he's an outright joke is the fact that El Guapo has seen fit to lend an ounce of his brilliance to the guy.

Ultimate Fighter Get's Knocked out and Gains the Win.

rembar says...

You mean a double-KO kind of situation? Actually, Boom, I can think of twice in the UFC. Hughes vs. Newton 1, Newton locked in a triangle choke from guard but didn't break Hughes's posture, so Hughes picked him up and slammed him. Newton was knocked out immediately, but Hughes also went sorta limp, either because he dropped head-first into the slam or because he'd gotten choked out, although Hughes kept going and was awarded the controversial win. There was also a TUF fight where one guy took a wicked body shot, doubled over, then straightened up to connect with a wild haymaker for the KO, and then collapsed himself. Although I can't think of another situation in the UFC particularly where both guys went down at exactly the same moment.

Double-KO slams aren't all that rare in MMA, particularly. I've seen them a few times in amateur events, and a bunch of times (not really KOs, maybe, but both guys getting totally stunned) in hard sparring and smoker matches with guys who were never taught how to perform a proper shot.

The standard double-leg takedown that is practiced in MMA is the wrestling, not judo, variety. Notice in the video how Yamamoto makes his penetration step with his lead leg, drives in to his knee, then brings his rear leg past that to pop up to his feet again, driving sideways with his head while blocking his opponent's far leg with his knee. This allows him to pick the guy up sideways, so his opponent can't pull his head down if he gets a guillotine-style headlock. This is called "turning the corner" in grappling, and it's drilled into fighters' heads from day one.

If you don't turn the corner on a double-leg and instead drive in judo-style, and your opponent gets that guillotine control, you'll end up dropping both your and your opponent's weight onto the top of your head as you hit the mat. It's a beginner's mistake, though, and I can't really figure out what Maynard was thinking.

Turkey Guillotine - Dumb inventions

k8_fan says...

The guillotine was originally invented as a more human form of execution than hanging - it is very quick compared to strangulation. I know a few folks who hunt for food, venison and wild turky makes up a considerable portion of their diets. And, yeah, this is a more humane death than they'd receive in most slaughterhouses.
