Quake Champions Quakecon 2016 Gameplay

Overwatch does monitor for cheating. Blizzard also issues permanent bans. Battle.net in and of itself is fairly resistant, read the last link on how much harder it was to even create an aimbot hack for Overwatch than for any game using VAC.

Bethesda and Id, on the other hand, don't seem nearly as concerned or proactive. Which is bad, because you can have the most fun game in the universe and lose playerbase because of the cheating. They could take steps, very simple ones, such as enabling a spectator mode so that you could take video from the view of the cheating player. They could enable dedicated servers so that there could be admins in place to ban cheaters from those servers. They could even act on the multiple reports sent to them of obvious cheaters and ban them.

They chose to do none of that. Instead they chose to release a 15 dollar DLC that many say (including me) is hardly worth that amount. You get 3 new maps that you have to play in rotation mode, one new armor skin, some goofy rainbow spectrum colors, a few new post match taunts, and an extremely underwhelming new weapon/demon.

So, tldr mode, Blizzard does bust their ass to prevent hacking via software and bans, while Bethesda/Id does neither and releases new cash grab DLC. One of those methods is successful with an estimated 15m players and one has about 2k players on average. I'll let you figure out which is which and which will still be around in a month or two.

Totally agree. Overwatch is doing really horribly without all of that!

</sarcasm>

Not to make this into a Blizzard vs id thing here, but honestly, it really is all about the packaging. You don't need all of what you're saying, you just need a fun game that works well. I think Quake Champions is trying to reclaim some of its FPS glory in this regard. Hopefully it's fun...

The Viral Experiment - The Woolshed Company

Babymech says...

Pretty tenuous to call this an experiment... What hypothesis were they testing, that people watch and share exciting content? That video editing technology is fairly advanced by now but certainly not flawless?

They seem to start off with some media criticism - 'how much of the news should you believe -' but then lose that trail since A) all of their videos were questioned and called out by many as fake, and B) everybody already knows that the 'news' section of the show is over when the anchors are just reacting to fun videos they found online.

I'm fine with this video being an example of well scripted VFX to maximize virality for virtality's sake, but it's pretty goofy to call it an experiment. The best part was the cameo by TV's Frank.

I was so FUCKING bored AND tired (like barely keeping my eyes open; falling asleep, then writing more, then eventually hitting: POST!--lol) when I wrote that, can you tell?

The best part about this is that I didn't need pot or anything to make such a crazy post/comment. This was fully driven by my sleep disorder. Basically, I start to go into an "REM" like state when I get really tired (or in my case, when the right time of day hit). Sometimes I'm unable to catch myself before I do something...goofy and or funny.

THUS, you now have this wonderful post created from my sub-conscious and conscious self-working hard together to create a masterpiece!

Personally, I always find it amazing that I'm able to put sentences together and that at some points they are actually understandable, so long as you take them into consideration in a mystical and crazy freaking world/Universe where certain rules are true... The best you can do to re-create this experience is to get a mild form of Narcolepsy that MOSTLY preys on your dream and "sub-conscious" aspects belonging to the REM stage or staging... Then you have to deal with LOTS of "night terrors", hypnagogic hallucinations, and other issues (like Cataplexy). Then, you too can write mystical, strange, and WTF(?!) writings like I have above!!!

Enjoy!

why is the media ignoring the sanders campaign?

Lawdeedaw says...

Ron Paul was not goofy, but he was a (partially) fringe candidate. The gold standard being his biggest kookiness. But as far as just being loved by libertarians, well, that's what the media sold and that's what some poor saps actually believe.

As more a liberal leaning guy I swapped parties to vote for Paul. His honesty was nice but would have been unverifiable. However, his willingness to buck those he could have been bought by and made president from amazed me. He wasn't a populist except insofar as that his message was against those in power.

But what is most funny is this. Paul didn't do bad in the polls for basically being a 3rd party candidate. In that he smashed Nader and most other 3rd party candidates. Even knowing his defeat, those still willing to show their vote to him was astonishing. Now some would argue that he technically wasn't third party since he ceremoniously went under the Republican brand...but that's about stupid logic there.

"if this tactic is unsuccessful, they will do what they did to ron paul and demonize sanders.they will portray him as a "kook" a weird, fringe "goofy' candidate.which is exactly what was done to ron paul."

Except that Paul WAS a goofy, fringe candidate. He had no mainstream support from either side. Sure, the libertarians loved him, but the conservatives hated his stance on drugs and progressives hated his stance on, well, pretty much everything else.

Sanders probably has more actual support amoung his liberal base than Paul did amoung the conservatives, but there's a very real chance that he WOULD lose a presedential race against a moderate conservative.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Sanders get in. Ironically, I think the only chance he has is if Trump gets the republican nod.

I feel like I have to be an expert on Tumblr just to understand what they're making fun of it for. Somebody is... 'shipping' the... uh... Wrong things to 'ship'?

Edit: OK, never mind, this was actually intended as a goofy in-joke for tumblr-people. That means I still need someone to tell me what tumblr is actually for

First, lemme take a selfie

I can't confirm there was a contest or something going on, but I have found other stories noting the girls were apologized to by the team and Fox Sports and that they did indeed ask for the tickets be donated to the New Leaf charity. The girls confirm it on their Facebook https://www.facebook.com/axoasu/posts/950038358385816.

It probably does explain why they were making faces and being goofy for so long.

I never knew there was blow back for it. It did eventually seem the announcers got carried away by going on and on about it, but I thought it was more in jest than them actually feeling that way.

And I upvoted and laughed too... indeed may have shared the video elsewhere.

I don't like this clip for the music. They're making it out to be a big goofy joke. It's not very funny to me to see two people take a hard fall and be hurt, albeit mildly.

When I saw your comment on "Comment of the Moment", I clicked on it hoping, praying, that it would be one of those videos where there's a camera rigged up to a weather balloon in the stratosphere, with something goofy like a rubber duck in the foreground, only this time the rubber duck would be a dead raccoon.

This video's almost as good though.

A Response to Lars Andersen: a New Level of Archery

sumdumfu says...

i agree. she's overly dismissive while ignoring some undeniably effective shooting. i'm not an archery expert, but even the speed shooters she shows are nowhere near as fast as lars. yes his video was goofy, but don't ignore his innovations just cuz he's bad at video production.

draak13 said:

I have much more experience than the average person. Lars seems to invent and conjecture as much historical evidence as some other posters here, but what he does is very impressive. You could accurately classify it as trick shooting, but since archery is now a sport instead of a practical thing...it's all pretty gray.

What's neat is that Lars' technique works significantly better than current common practices...albeit in what are currently uncommon situations, such as riding horseback or running & shooting. There are 2 things that makes these kinds of situations difficult:

1) Keeping the arrow resting against the side of the bow and the handle. If you've ever shot before, most beginning shooters will have their arrow accidentally drop to the ground many times before they fire a successful shot. Even for someone who is more than a novice, a strong breeze can easily knock your arrow away from this notch. Shooting while on horseback or running is a whole new level of difficult.

2) Firing rapidly. Firing off many arrows in succession is a difficult thing, seriously. Despite Anna Maltese's dismissal of Lars' demonstration on why firing on the 'wrong' side of the bow is faster, it truly does remove many of the steps, and speeds up the entire process. In modern archery, Right handed people fire the arrow on the left side of the bow, and left handed people fire the arrow on the Right side of the bow. Reasons for this could be conjectured, but from personal experience, learning how to shoot the arrow from the wrong side of the bow is almost like learning archery all over again...it feels weird. From watching related videos, the way Lars holds many arrows in his hand, making sure to rotate each arrow into the appropriate knocked position each time, is a significant achievement that Anna did not touch on.

What's particularly impressive is that Lars has achieved improvements in both categories simultaneously by firing from the wrong side of the bow. To my knowledge, modern trick shooting is the typical shooting style simply with impressive feats of accuracy, or at best being able to throw an object into the air and hit it with one arrow. In comparison, Lars changed the way he shoots his arrows, and has been able to significantly upgrade the art because of it (throwing an object in the air and hitting it with 3 arrows before reaching the ground). In my opinion, this is beyond regular trick shooting, and warrants a reinvestigation on why modern archery is the way it is.

HARDCORE - First Person P.O.V. Film

hamsteralliance says...

I've been dreaming of a modern film shot entirely from a first person POV, but from the trailer, I don't think this one is the film I was hoping for. This is just Call of Duty and goofiness, like an extended FreddieW or Corridor Digital video.

The Twelfth Doctor Doesn't Like Danny (Doctor Who)

AeroMechanical says...

It's a shame that couldn't have been the character. I don't think I like Peter Capaldi as the Doctor all that much... not necessarily the choice of the man himself, but the character is too much like Peter Davison's Doctor, which is my least favorite of the Doctors (excluding those whose existence I discount entirely). Maybe he'll grown on me more, but Capaldi has the wrong mixture of goofy and serious in his character.

A *really* aggressively, over the top curmudgeon but with a bit of depth would have been more interesting and funny.
