Alien - H. R. Giger's Beautiful Monster

Maximan says...

Giger was a true genius . If you have never seen Necronomicon or Necronomicon II, Google it - the art is awesome and so original! Have a look at the furniture he designed it's totally amazing.
ALIEN is a fantastic movie, although the tech looks a little dated now, but I love ALIENS - such a great movie, one of the few films I never get tired of watching!

Great video, thank you for sharing Mekanikal!
And thank you H.R. Giger for your wonderful imagination and skill. Rest in peace.

Zdzisław Beksiński seems to be a heavy influence, more so than Giger.
Their kickstarter failed to reach it's target sadly, so hopefully they can pull something interesting together with the resources they have.

Uh oh! Llyod's figured out modern art

Sagemind says...

If they have to write an essay about the art to define what I'm looking at, then they are a creative writer, not a visual artist.

I should be able to look at a piece, and get something out of it. Good feelings or bad, it should evoke something that makes me want to be part of it. Edward Munch and Francis Bacon, hell even HR Giger didn't make art that was feel good, but their works are amazing and evoke emotions that stay with you.

206? Ouch.
But my comment was more general: things I think won't make it may skyrocket (HR Giger, scary robot), while others I consider a slam dunk will stutter or tank (Black Sabbeth, Manborg).
Due to The Sift's community size, I suspect a lot of it as more to do with timing than anything else, tho.

I'll second that... and cite the 206 music sifts in my pqueue as examples!

That said though, if the video is interesting they can also do quite well... and besides, many of us enjoy seeing them posted here even if they don't shoot to the top of the charts.

The Man Who Redefined Monster Movies

Sagemind says...

Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who designed the creature in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror classic Alien, has died at age 74 from injuries suffered in a fall, his museum said Tuesday.

Sandra Mivelaz, administrator of the H.R. Giger museum in Gruyeres, western Switzerland, told The Associated Press that Giger died in a hospital on Monday.

Giger's works, often showing macabre scenes of humans and machines fused into hellish hybrids, influenced a generation of movie directors and inspired an enduring fashion for "biomechanical" tattoos.

"My paintings seem to make the strongest impression on people who are, well, who are crazy," Giger said in a 1979 interview with Starlog magazine. "If they like my work they are creative ... or they are crazy."

That is an interesting piece of info I did not know about. I never really understood why they went with Lynch for Dune, either. Not that that was a bad idea, I know a lot of people complain about Lynch's adaptation but I liked it a lot. I bet Jodorowsky's version would have been absolutely insane and even less on point with the Dune novel. I can only imagine all of the shit Jodorowsky could shove into that.
wiki: "he planned to cast the surrealist artist Salvador Dali as the Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, who requested a fee of $100,000 per hour. He also planned to cast Orson Welles as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who only agreed when Jodorowsky offered to get his favourite gourmet chef to prepare his meals for him throughout the filming.[23] The book's protagonist, Paul Atreides, was to be played by Jodorowsky's own son, Brontis Jodorowsky. The music would be composed by Pink Floyd, Magma, Henry Cow and Karlheinz Stockhausen"
Damn, man has some fine taste in music. And yep, looks like it would have been insane.

>> EDIT: oh yeah, it's all there on IMDB but I won't spoil it for anyone.

That's because Dan O'Bannon recruited Giger for the alien creature design after working with him on Jodorowsky's failed attempt to make Dune.

Weird times. The days of hiring directors like Lynch to take over a science fiction epic are over. It didn't work and it's not what people want to see.

If Jodorowsky had made Dune, it would have given a handful of people hard ons and Rocky Horror would have fallen to the way side as the midnight movie standard. All in all, I think there'd be less trannys and Hedwig and the Angry Inch would never have been made.

Frank Herbert, Dan O'Bannon, Jodorowsky, Dali, Welles, and Pink Floyd all under one roof? The entire movie would have been one big water of life spice orgy. Pregnant women viewing the movie would've given birth to abominations possessed by Orson Welles.

So, is it like an "Alien" prequel? Or maybe a way later sequel? You gotta love that a lot of the imagery here is borrowed from Cameron's "Aliens", and of course, Giger.
If it IS is a prequel, I gotta wonder if they'll still be using green-screen monitors on their spaceships.

Yep, that big horse-shoe shaped ship is the ship from the first two Alien movies. Halfway through you can see the cockpit pop up that is in the first movie as well. >> ^Ryjkyj:
