Zero Punctuation: Left 4 Dead 2 & New Super Mario Bros Wii

Asphyxium913 says...

I don't really have any facts on this, but I wouldn't be surprised if they released it early just because they were excited about it.

I haven't played the first one, but the gore effects are so good that I am ecstatic. I'm a major fan of the Soldier of Fortune franchise and consider myself to be a critic in my own right.

L4D2 meets and/or surpasses SOF2's gore in multiple respects. Any fan of SOF should play L4D2; it's obvious that they were using it as an example.

This may be a minor point, but does anyone remember how nice the real-time character renders were in Resident Evil (remake) on the Gamecube?

I think they've added a similar touch to the playable characters in general texture quality (performance would degrade too much if this detail was present on 200 zombies though).

You won't be disappointed.

Any gamers in the crowd? (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

Alright, brace yourself. This is gonna be long.

I've had a handheld almost as long as I can remember, we'd have SEGA Gamegears, little portable things..well, technically not little, it was like 8 inches wide and took 8 AA Batteries to power if you weren't using an AC cord.

From there I got a PSX for Christmas when I was 7, and started off playing Tomba and Jersey devil, eventually graduating to better known games like Tenchu and FFVII+

A year later, I got an N64 and Zelda OOT, had those for years and amounted a fairly impressive collection of games.

Sometime in this period I also came across the GB, GB Colour, and eventually the GBA.

When the PS2/Xbox launch came years later, I asked for a PS2 for Christmas, and for whatever reason my mom convinced me to get an Xbox (No idea why) Got DoA3 and Amped as the two games for that...a month later for my birthday I got Max Payne and Silent hill 2..which scared the everloving shit out of me.
(I was the only person who had an Xbox out of all my friends, and we played the original halo so much I had to buy 4 different copies of it because of how scratched they got)

Year after that I got a PS2 for xmas, and FFX..and probably some other stuff that I actually don't remember.

Later in 2003ish, I bought FFXI and that's what started me down the road of MMo's, I bought it for PS2 and had a special Keyboard/controller thing that hooked into the USB slot for the console.

My xbox got moded because I rarely went on live, and the mod that was placed gave me a crapton of original NES and SNES games, as well as a few PSX rips.

I also got a gamecube, prettymuch for the sole reason of Smash bro's, but I also have a copy of fire emblem kicking around somewhere.

Acquired a PsP sometime in this timeframe aswell.

When the 360 was released in 2005, I bought the "Pro" console, and a copy of oblivion to go with it.

Some months down the road, my friend got interested in MMo's too, and wanted to try WoW, so we got the $2 demo disc and went our separate ways home to install it. Well, our family only had 1 shitty computer up til that point (it was bought in 2001) and didn't have a DvD drive, so I bought my own computer..can't remember the specs, but it was basically a piece of crap.

From there I played WoW consistantly for about 2 years, and off and on for another 3.

I also decided to upgrade my video card this year..Went and bought an ATI..something, got it home, installed it myself (Was the first time i'd ever opened my computer) and found out that my computer wouldn't turn on after that. Half hour later, went back to Futureshop and the guy told me that I needed to upgrade my power supply to a 450w to power the card.. wasn't happy, but I sprung for it.

After this, I installed and tried out Vanguard (to test the new video card with a brand new MMo) the day after, I uninstalled vanguard and set it on fire.

Nov 19, 2006. Actually lined up at a walmart to buy a Wii.. worst investment of my life.

In 2007 I bought a 60G Ps3 because they went on sale due to them only making the 20 and 80 after that.

2008 my 450w power supply died, and in attempting to fix it, I managed to fry a couple other aspects of my PC, and was forced to buy a new one.

I improved it to a 750w Supply and bought an extra 2 gigs of ram, and an Nvidia 8800 GTS 512mb, and tried AoC out when it launched, then WAR.

EvE, Richard Gariotts Tabula Rasa, CoH/CoV, FFXI(pc) Pirates of the Burning Sea, EQ2, and LoTRO all fit in there somewhere, too..but not sure where. So do NDS, NDSi, and an Ipod touch.

I've got a Pre-order for Aion (yay beta key!) and i'm currently working on Empire:Total War on my PC.

Overall..I'd have to say I actually prefer FPS' on console, I prefer twich shooting with my thumbs. RTS wins out PC, and some RPG's (Fallout, ect) are also on my PC..but the majority of my games fall onto my consoles.

..Overall, i've probably got over $10,000 worth of video game crap all in one room..

Metroid: Other M E3-trailer

It's spelled "psyched." And I am, too.

Really surprising that Retro Studios isn't developing this - their handling of the Metroid Prime titles for the GameCube, Wii, and DS breathed new life into an aging (but very popular) Nintendo franchise. But Team Ninja has had some success with their recent Ninja Gaiden titles (the DS Ninja Gaiden title is quite awesome), so I doubt that they'll mishandle it.

Samus Aran is one of the first *femme video game heroins.

I recommend watching the HD version. It looks very sharp.

Whats the best console? (User Poll by Throbbin)

You need to add one more selection... all of the above. I'm equally happy with all 3, I use the PS3 mainly for BluRay and Little Big Planet. XB360 is a good gaming machine with the boost of being a MS Media Center Extender, I can watch all my vids from my Windows 7 machine, nice. Wii...tons of fun with my son and great support for the gamecube games we already had.

For all the buzz, this generation may be the most lackluster collection I've ever seen.

The 360 is just evolutionary. It's the best system only because Sony and Nintendo did so much less. All the hardware issues put a big dent in its image. It's got the strongest library but a lot of the big games on 360 are meant to be played on a PC, so you're just getting a half-assed version of the game. Halo, L4D, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Dead Space, etc.

The PS3 was a departure for Sony. For the prior 2 generations they dominated the market with shoddy, obsolete hardware and slick marketing and they should have stuck with that. Instead they built an overpriced cash leech with lots of fancy new technologies that don't work well together and told their customer base to get a second job or take out a mortgage to buy one. Like the PS1 and PS2, the PS3 is impossible to program for and since it's got mediocre market share, developers can afford to skimp on it. PSN doesn't compare with Live, even when free... serious connection and throughput issues combine with hosts that kick you from the game if you're better than them to create a totally frustrating online experience. Oh yeah, and I hate Sony's little kiddie controller. It makes my hands cramp. If you're really into watching cutscenes (MGS, Final Fantasy), this is the console for you.

The Wii... obviously the most successful of the group by a longshot. When it comes to just doing business, Nintendo has been cleaning up for a while now. The Xbox and Xbox360 have yet to turn a profit and the Playstation brand has been never been profitable either. Nintendo, meanwhile, made a nice profit on the Gamecube by selling it above cost and has completely cleaned up shop with the Wii. Another thing I can appreciate is the honesty of Nintendo's product. They're not using it to manipulate people into repurchasing all of their movies or buying a Windows Media Center PC; they're just selling a gaming console. The unfortunate part of the Wii is that they never really pushed the envelope. They somehow took their "revolution" and reduced it to a cheap gimmick before the first shot was fired. If you've played WiiSports, then you've experienced 90% of what Wii has to offer.

I also stream my downloaded videos from my desktop through my wireless network and watch them in the living room.

Welcome to the future. I've been doing that for 7 years now with my original Xbox. XBMC still does a better job of it than PS3 or 360.

Saying developers shouldn't create games aimed at a market above the 'casual gamer' gives me the utter shits.

You raise some good points, but RE4 was a last generation game built originally for the gamecube; of course it's going to translate well to the wii.

The PS360 is the current bastion of "hardcore" console gaming, and takes priority of the Wii. So you end up getting shitty ports; or a game like Redsteel, which tries to cash in on the novelty of the Wii controller without taking the effort to provide compelling gameplay; or games like Madworld which goes "hey, we know our game isn't good enough to make it in the big leagues, so lets make it Wii exclusive because there's much less competition"

I guess what Yahtzee is saying is, publishers should stop making hardcore games for the Wii for all the wrong reasons, especially when they have no idea how to get it right.

The evolution of the cell phone

10874 says...

What needs to happen is, IMO, a breakthrough (literally) of something akin to the Xbox, which basically took all of the PS2/Gamecube garbage (minus the architecture of the PS2 processors, which were similar to Cell I guess) and flipped the bird with a graphics card better than money could buy, and other things. (The card in the Xbox is a custom built Geforce 3 with an extra pixel pipeline. No other card was this powerful at the time, and my Visiontek Geforce 3 cost me $200 alone.)

The hardware in these phones is, I guess, usually crappy. I've had 3 cellphones, and this Samsung U410 is the very first to actually be able to support its own weight with its operating system.

I'm waiting on the Intel Atom processors to show the cell phone companies what decent hardware is all about. I've also heard mention of video cards being toyed with as an idea for actual cell phone gaming. This would also solve that little problem my phone has with trying to use motion blur (commonly seen in Xbox360/PS3 games) with the camera display (IDIOCY!!!).

Worthy of note though is that the IPhone has a tri-core processor setup.

And yes, cell phones DO need better quality hardware, because if your phone isn't powerful enough to support its own operating system, it's a piece of crap.

I'm going to have to buy a Wii just for this game alone. I did pretty much the same thing with the Gamecube (and man was Sunshine a huge disappointment. First Mario game I couldn't be bothered to finish).
