Norway landslide sweeps homes into sea

newtboy says...

No doubt. It appears to be going back to it's original site at the end.

Side note, now that you've demonstrated your abilities, Gaia, can you please push another white house into the sea for me?

Was that one white house built on a raft! Totally refused to succumb.

Don't associate the term science with the bioneers. The bioneers are a group of mother earth loving hippies. I say that, because fully 50% of the bioneer presentations I've been unfortunate enough to hear on radio all revolve around the 'scientific' importance of respect for GAIA and mother earth. Regularly they will make the link with mumbo jumbo about quantum this or that. They are adamantly and vehementally anti-science and spreaders of massive amounts of deliberate and brutal ignorance.

Maybe this is one of the few actual scientists they've managed to get their hands on, but he did just talk about the 'earth's own internet', so not hopeful.

Colonel Sanders Explains Our Dire Overpopulation Problem

ChaosEngine says...

From reading some of the comments, it would appear that many people still do not understand basic math.

Over population is a problem. It is real and it will self correct one way or another. Science can't save us (short of moving us all to a digital existence), and we will hit critical population density long before we achieve the kind of technological sophistication to allow us to colonise other planets (singularity notwithstanding).

Basically, there are three possible outcomes:
1. We voluntarily stop having so many kids and we certainly stop celebrating ridiculously huge families like those fucking morons on "18 and counting" or whatever the fuck it's called. This is the best case scenario, and IMHO, the most unlikely

2. Wide scale population control. One child policies, etc. unpleasant but still less unpleasant than...

3. We do nothing and the problem corrects itself. And when I say corrects itself, I mean global hunger on a scale not seen since the last ice age; massive pandemics or just plain ol' killing the fuck out of each other.

This is isn't some airy fairy, mother Gaia, hippy nonsense, it's simple math.

On the plus side, we'll almost certainly have made the planet nigh uninhabitable for ourselves by then anyway.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Not many pople know about procedural geometry and texture generation, executable packing and other various techniques used in demos, let alone know how to do them.

The "One Album Per Sifter" Quest (Rocknroll Talk Post)

residue says...

Love this idea. I'll add something a little different...

You really ought to check out some Devin Townsend if you're into some really unique sounds.. The guy has an incredible range but dedicates his base music to "metal." Though the genre is closest to metal most of the time, he also has some really outside music as well with a recent example being the paired 2 disc project of deconstruction and ghost, 2 wildly different albums. One of my favorite projects by Townsend, however, is an album called Synchestra, which when played as intended is a seamless blend of an entire album. There are no gaps between most of the songs making it very easy to listen to the whole album. It's also got cameo artists like Steve Vai and Deborah Tyzio in some tracks.

On a side note I he's incredible live. Seen him twice, once headlining. Amazing. He talks to the crowd the entire time and got down in the crowd to play a few times. Wonderful energy, great personality and really intelligent.

I'll stick a few links from synchestra in here though it's better to go start to finish and enjoy the rollercoaster

All from Synchestra:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc2dsNQX4Tw - Triumph. Metal + banjo? why not...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XERqZRMG5Cg - vampolka. Directly precedes vampira, which can be found on the sift.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzewVfIX9_w - Gaia. awesome tune. A "sprinting" song for me when running..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ0T7_3YD6o - Pixillate, follows Gaia. awesome vocals once it gets going. goosebumps.

Atheist Woman Ruffles Feathers On Talk Show About Religion

bareboards2 says...

I upvoted this because I believe this is part of the future of science. It is easy to dismiss these concepts as new age touchy-feely stuff and poo-poo it out of hand.

But it is similar to something discussed in this vid http://videosift.com/video/Dark-Energy

70% of the universe is unexplained and for "placeholder" purposes, it is now called Dark Energy, until scientists can figure it out. This wasn't even a question 50 years ago, now our brightest minds are looking into it.

"Gaia consciousness" could well be the Dark Energy of the future.

Until then, whether it exists or not, it is fact that we are seriously screwing with the ecosystems of this planet. So whether there is "collective intelligence" or not, we had better get on to seriously changing our behavior.

>> ^criticalthud:

They're still engaged in a primitive debate.
Conceptually, we can't even get passed the notion that god is a singular "being" like us, rather than a vast intellectual complexity - that only becomes more complex as evolution continues. and we are all part of that process. recycled energy in an infinite process.
we're just so fucking self-centered that we miss the the intelligence that is all around us, and just how interdependent we are on the biodiversity we are mindlessly destroying.
we miss the fact that there is a collective intelligence of this planet, without which, we would be nothing. and instead of nurturing it, we're jerking off.

The Dangers of Unbridled Optimism

Unless you are an atheist. Atheists believe that humans are the pinnacle...well, some atheists believe that the Earth, or Gaia, or whatever they call it, is the apotheosis of creation.

No we don't claim shit. You suscribe us to that simple belief because you must have that thought to comfort you.

I believe that nothing is the pinnacle and everything is equal, everythings 'matters.'

Rush Limbaugh Laughs About Japan

messenger says...

This is the very next thing Rush says after this clip, in which he's praising the caller for his insight:

"What kinda payback is this? That is an excellent question. They invented the Prius -- and, in fact, where Gaia blew up is right where they make all these electric cars. That's where the tsunami hit. All those brand-new electric cars are sitting there on the lot. I like the way this guy was thinking. It's like Gaia hit the Prius and Leaf plants. It's like they were in the crosshairs (if we can use that word). It does. What is Gaia trying to tell us here? What is the mother of environmentalism trying to say with this hit? Great observation out there, Chris." -- Rush

Like @blackoreb said, he's laughing at the perceived irony.

None of this, however takes away from the fact that since Cenk moved to MSNBC he's become a lefty attack dog as full of misinformation and misrepresentation as the ones on the right. Too bad. He's great when he's not on MSNBC.

Rush Limbaugh Laughs About Japan

Crosswords says...

Best I can figure out is Rush is mocking those who think by recycling they're helping prevent natural disasters. Cenk isn't as bad a some of the other outlets, he does explain people recycle for reasons that have nothing to do with appeasing an earth god. He does fall for the bait of trying to paint Rush as someone who thinks Earth is punishing Japan.

That doesn't mean Rush wasn't being an insensitive dick. Reading Pennypacker's link its clear Rush feels recycling is a waste of time because its not cost effective. And he seems to be taking an inordinate amount of glee in the fact the Japanese were very Earth conscious and now many of their cities are buried under mud rubble and dead bodies. They have clearly wasted their time and money trying to appease Gaia. As Cenk pointed out, not why the Japanese people recycle.

In the transcript Rush mentioned NYC shutting down its glass and plastic recycling because it was costing too much. From what I understand NYC now has to ship all of its garbage out of state, or at least far away from the city because its landfills are full. This has increased the cost of waste management and made recycling glass and plastic cost effective in NYC again. To Rush's credit apparently the old recycling program was poorly run and a lot of the recyclables ended up in the landfills anyways.

Glenn Beck - God Punished Japan With Earthquake, Tsunami

quantumushroom says...

Here we have the same gargle of atheists going out of their way to get pissed off at one man's opinion. It's fun to be offended...the religious equally enjoy being offended by what they deem blasphemous.

All right, you don't care for GB and wouldn't no matter what he said, but you would "respect" him more for saying what he "really" thinks? Read the quote. It implies something, but is so vague as to be meaningless.

Obama never says what he means and he's the President. For now.

It was not a well-constructed thought, but it says nothing to the effect of God singled out Japan for its sins or that Japan 'deserved' it.
Tis a far cry from what Stenk and Friends are insinuating, but expect no less from "interpreters" who are anti-religion.

So supernatural force causing earthquakes to send a message that stuff people are doing is not good. It is still a moron trying to place human causation on a natural disaster. He's playing the same stupid game he always does, 'I'm not going to say (blank is a blank) but wink wink you gotta wonder.'
And thus why I suggest he's got shriveled raisins for testicles because he's too much of a pussy to say what he actually means. I'm sure his fans would eat it up and his buddies at FOX would just go, Oh Glen you so crazy, but you make us a lot of money so we love you.
