Capitalism Didn’t Make the iPhone, You iMbecile

newtboy says...

1) I question your sources, because some of the earliest writings ever found were business ledgers dealing with selling grains as I understand it. Capitalism has been a thing since before writing was a thing.

2) um...I think those kids in China would dispute that....THEY made the Iphones, which created a smart phone market by being useful and fun (for most people).

3) do you believe capitalism and the industrial revolution started at the same time, or that capitalism has something to do with surfs, civil rights, or secularism? Capitalism applied to people is indentured servitude, what we lazily call slavery. Unfettered capitalism created a situation where civil rights needed to be delineated and codified, it didn't create them any more than wildfires created firemen imo.

Some people do educate themselves before acting or making purchases, but it's not the norm.

Capitalism says your poor neighbors should die, because capitalism says there is no value to human life...I did a term paper on that. Value is derived from a supply/demand equation, and there's such a glut of humanity that human life has a negative value.

The government paid for around 75% of the technology development. "...it paid for some of the technology...." is incredibly misleading, if technically correct (the best kind of correct). Without a healthy dose of socialism, progress slows to a crawl and only the privileged few can afford it.

1 word....flip-phones. ;-) (I don't even have one of those)

1) Definitely - but without a market improvements fall flat and dont stick. Ancient people had a lot of good ideas but overall progress was really slow and retrograded often until.. well until capitalism became a thing. Abolishing serfdom, general civil rights, separation of church from state and the fall of absolutism made the Iphone possible.

2) No, that is my point. People "discover" things all the time, some of these things are deemed useful by the general public and capitalism provides the tools to finance production and distribution (the profit part is optional - it is entirely legal to sell your invention for any price or indeed give it away for free).

So to get to the original point capitalism did not discover or design the Iphone but it certainly MADE the Iphone.

3) Not impossible but incredibly slow. Generations lived out their entire lives without perceptible changes in their environments prior to the onslaught of capitalism and the industrial revolution. The advent of science from the renaissance onwards was OK, but only once factories and transport infrastructure became a thing did living conditions start to change for everyone.

A big problem with free markets is that they are never really "free". A theoretical free market implies too many things that dont ever happen in real life, like everyone having all relevant information and being able to make a good decision. People just dont do that IRL.

Also not everything can be solved by free markets because you cant just let your neighbors die poor because the market says they deserve it. However the Iphone is really not something the state should subsidize. I understand that it paid for some of the technology that went into designing it. But true socialism would have to make sure everyone could afford one, and would design a cheap bad phone to fit the need.

Palm Tree Trimming Gone Bad

Just wait a generation or two. They will turn around, look at you, and then flip you the bird and then scuttle away making little squeaky, laughing sounds. Just you wait.

The Best Of Conan Guests

moonsammy says...

I love that last part for the added reason of how she complains (?) about Conan checking out her cleavage, then immediately flips back the one chunk of hair which was partially obstructing the view. Probably an unconscious action, but I found it funny.

Meanwhile at a Democratic Socialists Convention...

newtboy says...

Fair enough.
I think both mentioned ideologies bear some responsibility for zealous extremists from their groups. Disavowing them and their extremist views mitigates that responsibility, but doesn't erase it.
Mainstream Islam has done a better, more consistent job of late in disavowing Islamic extremists, the "right" flip flops from condemning right wing extremists to calling them "good people", "patriots" and "our base" while publicly creating, supporting, and repeating the extremist views and conspiracies repeatedly cited as the motives for terrorism.

I'm Canadian, so as much as American politics and media is pervasive up here, some of it still foreign to me.

That said, it feels like I'm observing a not undeserved observation that white-national and anti-immigrant ideologies are dominating mass shootings in the US. I guess where I get wary is with the sources most adamant about demanding that leadership on the 'right' acknowledge and address it as their own problem. Those same sources when discussing terrorism dominated by those claiming Islamic ideologies are adamant that Islam not be unfairly tarred by bad actors.

I'd have an easier time swallowing the line if either side were consistent in their approach. Either you blame BOTH Islam AND the 'right' for terrorist acts claiming common cause, or you reject BOTH Islam AND the 'right' being blamed for a few bad actors...

Accident At Blake's Truck

jimnms says...

They really will bill you for that shit. I met a guy that was in a car accident. He got run off a road and his car hit a mile marker sign. The sign caused the car to flip over. He survived, but the state actually sent him a bill for the sign and labor to replace it. I told him he should send them his hospital bills because I thought those signs had to be designed to break so they wouldn't cause a car to flip if it hit it.

Emails Expose Efforts To Put USS John McCain 'Out Of Sight'

newtboy says...

No [Redacted], Trump is the blatant RINO, flipping his positions on every issue to get your vote.
McCain was a true Republican military hero, Trump is an illegitimate cowardly fraud who cucked you...if your wife was attractive he would gladly be fucking her in your bed....and you would probably feel honored when you removed your blindfold.

No point in going into the hundred ways he's not a Republican or conservative or Christian or patriot, you are deaf and blind to reality living in your bubble of Trumpian love....enough so to believe you are a Russian troll bent on harming America to the point of destroying the union. If you really aren't, then Putin has placed a cuckold's horns upon your brow too.
*facepalm

How This Cyclist Hit 184MPH and Set the World Record

BSR says...

I think we both know that doubling the previous record would be impossible under the conditions the pros compete in. Plus the pros make their record on indoor tracks if I'm not mistaken.

I made my trip on the east coast as I wanted stay closer to home if something unexpected happened.

This map shows my round trip route from Cape Canaveral to High Point NC and back. The blue was created with my GPS tracker which caused some lost data due to battery drain and poor signal. I flipped the image so the text was easier to read.

I met a lot of nice people. If you like to travel you might like this sight.

I was able to stay with people who invited me into their homes on 5 different occasions and never actually had to sleep on a couch.

EDIT: Someone else brought up the possible invasive species point so I'm on the fence with that. I don't want to be blamed for the next BIG earthquake that gives birth to the new Godzilla. Although, it's California. He could probably get a SAG card.

newtboy said:

that speed would have more than doubled the previous record and that would be amazing.

Nice trip. 2500 miles is a good chunk of the distance coast to coast (depending on the route). Where did you ride to/from?

I'm intrigued by the sand swap idea, but also concerned about the introduction of invasive species that may be living in that sand. Just a thought if you make the trip.

@eric3579, hey thanks, my man! Good to see you kicking it old school on VS. I got here because I saw @ant liked the video on Vimeo, and I wondered if he came from VS. Did a search and boom.

@my15minutes, hah! That was my introduction into Unity. Short but fun. Basically an asset flip, but that's why it's so cheap.

Steve Buscemi's Face Transferred To Jennifer Lawrence's Body

Jinx says...

I used to think that such effects would need to be flawless, or near flawless, because even very minor oddities get noticed. Even if you can't quite pinpoint what is off, you know something isnt right. Now I'm not sure, because it seems to me that recently it doesn't seem to matter if a lie is actually watertight, so much as getting enough people that want to believe it regardless. I wonder if this stuff undermines the truth perhaps not because it will be able to convince everybody (because it won't), but because it makes the indisputable disputable. Just like how "fake news" got totalled flipped 180 to undermine any trust in journalism.

Kids Tell Us if They Hear Grover Cursing - Sesame Street

TheFreak says...

I skipped past Kimmel saying what I was supposed to hear so I could judge it objectively. I listened over and over and couldn't figure out what it could possibly be accept for, "that sounds like an excellent idea."

Then I went back and found it it was supposed to be the F word and now I can hear it either way. I just have to set my expectation and it flips to whichever version I expect it to be.

I have to say, this is the first one of these "controversies" that I've actually been convinced by. All the others just appear to be a select few people pretending to take the obviously contrary side for attention.
