Don't stop in the outer lane!!

spoco2 says...

>> ^raverman:

Regardless why they stopped: To have a conversation, engine failure, or to avoid running over a baby - every driver is responsible to maintain their own safe stopping distance.
The asshole crashing through the side seems not have been looking at all let alone following too close to stop safely in wet weather.
I'm amazed anyone thinks it's appropriate to assume the people who stopped were at fault?
Sure, not ideal a place - but within their rights.

In pure legal sense, yes, the guy who ran into them is at fault, the one who runs into the back of the stopped ones is because they should have given enough space to avoid traffic incidents in front of them, indeed. And effectively they hit parked cars.

BUT, not stopping for an insanely STUPID reason in the FAST LANE of a freeway would have made none of this near fatal shit happen. Seriously, some people really need to look at themselves and their anger management.

What a complete dickhead. Serious anger issues if you stop ON A FREEWAY to do something like this, what a dick. I hate tailgaters as much as the next person, and a few little taps on the breaks to demonstrate they're being a serious dick is enough, but NEVER STOP ON A FREEWAY... In the fast lane too, what an absolute and utter moron. He's incredibly lucky this didn't end up as an enormous pile up. And I really would not be getting out of my car in this situation except maybe to quickly get on the other side of the barrier. Another car can very easily come smashing up your arse again just like that one did.

It's not in Britain because they're on the right side of the road (Britain drives on the left), with the driver on the left of the vehicle. So in this country they would be in the fast lane by being on the left.

Slow Traffic, Keep Right

Slow Traffic, Keep Right

IronDwarf says...

One shouldn't be in the fast lane one is unless literally passing someone to one's right. If one isn't in the act of passing, pull over at least one lane. I do this even on 4 lane freeways where I am constantly passing semis and other slow-asses.

I had a friend who was pulled over for going the speed limit in the fast lane. He didn't get a ticket, but the cop said if you are going slower than the flow of traffic, you shouldn't be in the fast lane, even if you are at the speed limit.

Slow Traffic, Keep Right

spoco2 says...

Fuck that cop. Cop or not he was purely a shitty driver. DO NOT TAILGATE.

Yeah that guy shouldn't have been going so slowly in the 'fast' lane, but tailgating is the domain of dickheads.

Fucker.

The Difference Speeding Makes

CrushBug says...

I always have mixed feelings about these kinds of PSAs. On the one hand, yes traveling slower shortens your stopping distance. On the other hand, there are a whole bunch of factors that go into the speed you travel at on any given road. The issue above was straight-line braking and I have avoided accidents due to being able to maneuver my vehicle. Also, I noticed that the faster car hit the side edge of the tail bumper which would cause massive damage, while the slower car hit the side safely panel on the truck. Pretty sure the faster car wouldn't have had so much damage if it had hit the same panel. I think they did this intentionally for dramatic effect. I think this actually takes away from their message.

What is the posted speed limit? What is the commonly understood speed limit? Highway 2 south of Edmonton is posted as 110 km/h (~68 mph). Common speed that most people travel at is 130 km/h (~80 mph). Is that a problem? No, not really. Everyone going at around the same speed works fine. People going 90 or 150 are the problem. The RCMP don't even pull you over unless you are traveling unsafely (fast lane changes or traveling over 130). I have driven through about 20 speed traps on Highway 2 at 130 and have never been pulled over.

Am I a good driver? Sorta. I know of a handful of friends who are better than me, including my wife. I am attentive and I know how to spot danger and how to avoid it. I maintain my vehicle and make sure that all steering, braking and yes, acceleration systems are in good working order. I have rarely used my cell phone when driving and when there are complicated road sections I usually stop talking and ignore any passengers to focus on the driving. I believe that this is why I haven't had a traffic accident in 15 years, but have avoided many. Speed is always a factor in accidents, but it is rarely the sole cause.

The vehicle is also a factor. I have driven down a 4 lane road marked 60 km/h and have checked my speed in my car and I am doing 80. That speed felt safe to me. I have driven that same road in my parent's van and have checked my speed at it felt like I was speeding at 55. I know that van accelerates, brakes and steers much worse than my car.

I believe that one of the biggest factors is driver training. I hate the fact that it takes almost no skill to get a driver's license and that there are no re-tests or other requirements. When I worked at a big chemical plant, long ago, fork lift drivers had all kinds of training and driving tests and re-tests to make sure they were operating safely. Almost all accidents had a root cause in a lack of training or experience and corrective action was taken. Drivers on the road? Whatever, just let them answer 10 multiple-choice questions and give them a plastic card with no follow-up. Drive safely!

FCC Rolls Out New Rules for Regulating Internet Traffic

marinara says...

man so tired of people trying to peddle fake net neutrality. Net neutrality isn't complicated, it means that i get the websites I want at the best speeds, without the cable company pushing it's crap in the "fast lane"

Oh and I love my pirate porn on usenet. They can pry my pirated porn collection off my network right out of my COLD DEAD HANDS.

Welcome to China! Please enjoy your ride! :)

The worst thing that you can't see from this video is that the cab drivers don't let you wear seat belts.

I concur. I was in China one month ago, and made the mistake of flying to Beijing from Zhuhai instead of from Hong Kong to save a few bucks (hint: don't do that). This meant a number of miles to and from the hotel by taxi. Ho boy. Also, they're not "on the fast lane". Every lane is the fast lane in China.

There's a positive side to that however (if you survive): after 45 minutes of safety-belt-less crazy taxi drive, where trucks can outspeed you, and where all cars overtake each others on the left or on the right constantly while bikers drive in the opposite direction on the emergency lane...When you arrive at the airport and your plane takes off, you realize something. You've been cured from flight fright. For ever.

wtf how can you actually watch this?

It can be done through an easy 12 step plan*.

Step 1: Have your eyes open.
Step 2: Click the small button that makes the clip start playing. If you have a fast internet connection go to step 5.
Step 3: Click it again to pause the clip to let it buffer.
Step 4: When clip has buffered click play again.
Step 5: Blink. Important: Don't forget to open eyelids again otherwise you wont see the clip.
Step 6: Breathe. Important: Both in and out.
Step 7: Repeat step 5 & 6 as needed.
Step 8: Follow links to part 2, 3 and 4 watch that.
Step 9: Feel.
Step 10: Upvote.
Step 11: ????
Step 12: Profit!

Solar Highways!!!

xxovercastxx says...

I just found a TEDx event where he presented this (see here) and he makes an interesting point: these don't have to be roads. They can be parking lots, walkways or playgrounds. They're aiming for parking lots first so that, as he put it, they can learn from their mistakes at low speeds rather than throwing them into the fast lane and seeing what happens.
