Cops Kill Mentally Challenged Teen Using "Non-Lethal" Force

The Power of Art: Rembrandt

Azules says...

"Rembrandt's Claudius Civilus tells us that the very greatest painting isn’t bound by time or taste, a reminder that if ever we should need it that eloquence doesn’t always come with a pretty face". FARK! Simon Schama and his wisdom never fails to leave me sitting here dumbfounded..

McCain Refuses to Endorse a Sarah Palin Presidential Run

quantumushroom says...

OMG, are you seriously trying to pin the mistake of the GOP nominating McCain on the Dems? Does that Right take ANY responsibility for its actions?

You mean aside from ignoring true conservative principles?--cause I'll agree with anyone on that.

I'll tell you what Rs fail to do, and that's prevent Ds from voting in R primaries. McLame got used to lavish praise from the left when he was a 'Democrat' senator. He sure seemed glad to get back to being the only kind of Republican liberals respect: a Democrat.

Despite being a turd who went back to being praised post-election, remember there was no Obama landslide in '08. Factor out the voting illegal aliens and ACORN thuggery and the popular vote would've been closer still. Even with a totally-lopsided media, Hollywood, naive youth and unions, half the country still ain't buying democrap.

Yes, you may not have cared for him, but wow. You're getting desperate with that statement...

I'd've voted for a karaoke machine if it kept the current communist despot occupying the Oval Office out. Have you looked outside your window? On his worst day, McCain has never been the total fark-up the rookie is and will continue to be.

Glenn Beck is a new kind of crazy

mizila says...

This man has disgusted me from the moment I saw him debut on Fox 2+ years ago.

Actually I think he debuted on Headline News, which is pretty much my favorite news station thanks to Robin Meade. I liked HN because it was just back to back news stories, repeated ad nauseum. Click over any time of day for 10-20 minutes and you're ready for the water cooler. Then they started putting 'shows' on, and ruined the good thing they had going. Like when the weather channel puts on the drama, I JUST WANT THE FARKING WEATHER!! Anyway, I remember when they first put this guy on air and I was like, "Holy shit! Faux news is invading the real news!!" Thankfully I was wrong, and he got canned and moved over to where he belongs.

Money Stuff (Blog Entry by dag)

joedirt says...

Ok, obviously charging for submissions or comments is bad idea. Some type of power point things might work (put up a paypal and have some cheap exchange rate).

You really should also look at all those awful facebook type games and other webpage games that you get bonuses by doing things like registering at some coupon page or those silly things, they must make referral money.

I really think the sift needs more ads mixed in as videos (at least for non-logged in users). I think you should have a donation link up there one week a month.

The problem is always getting past the dead zone of a $30/month level of traffic and when you have enough to make a profit. I don't think digg and other stuff will work, more traffic makes the problem worse. Is it more the dedicated server expenses or the traffic or is it 50/50?

I think you should turn of the filters and some features if it saves a lot on CPUs (not that down sizing is a good idea, but more efficient??) Or even a IP based bandwidth quota that probably would only effect a few people, and just a static page that says come back in 4 hours..

Every 10th video you click on the expand twistie and you get ajax ad frame instead with a SKIP>> thing. It's not that annoying and people can be charter if they care. I've always thought charter was too pricey.. I just don't know the sweet spot.

Anyways, I think the internet ad $$$ is going to get worse (but then again Amazon is the only ones making money). So I thinking it's like US dependence upon oil.

Do you think doubling the traffic will help? Doubling the ad clicks? Or just reducing costs and living off of donations and charter.

I think you should go look at the early fark model or g00ns forums and how they got over the 'hump'. (But that was in good economic times).

Adverts on the sift (Commercial Talk Post)

Croccydile says...

I will admit I'm in the same boat as Kerotan when it comes to ads, I usually despise the overly annoying types that move/flash/blink/explode/cook breakfast to get your attention when you just want to read something. Hence, I've been attempting to keep them out of my browsing experience for the past 3-4 years.

I know, it sucks, but it's my mentality. I can just skip a few pages of the adverts in a magazine or newspaper (or even TV now with DVRs) when I come across something that's just boring. Some websites I go to with the ads "turned on" make me wonder how on earth everyone else puts up with this stuff.

Perhaps its gotten better now, at least with video ads that don't play audio by default anymore. At the same time I see regression... Earlier in the year on IMDB, there was this horrible bat signal ad for The Dark Knight that would block whatever page you were trying to read until you managed to click it away. This was around for several months, yet now with no major movie marketing on IMDB the ad content is minimal again.

Certainly we are long gone from the days of PUNCH THE MONKEY (arrrgh!) but at the same time I realize that website owners have little other than picking and choosing ads to keep *out* of the rotation. Fark/Digg had this problem bad for a good while...

As far as charter membership, I can afford it, but there are times where I don't visit this website for a month at a time or like today I spend half the day browsing it. It's not expensive, but I imagine why not everyone pays is because of perhaps a more underlying reason: Services expected for money paid. I pay the same amount for a pro account on Flickr, however by paying you get additional services rather than just ads being removed. Some people see different value for the money over the internet?

I really like this website though, if it means the difference between make or break then I would rather see it make.
