Redline (2009) has amazing animation

cloudballoon says...

I always prefer these type of mostly hand-drawn animation than the CG fare we get all the time now.

It's one the select few animated movies I revisit every now and then outside of Ghibli Studios.

Ancient cat video

StukaFox says...

The expression on that cat's face at the end is like "Who the hell are you people? Are you from the future? You are! Tell me, oh temporal traveler, how fares a century of unbroken peace and human cooperation and kindness. . . ?
Really?
Shit, thank Christ I die in 1913!"

Failure

The most accurate & fairer index is probably comparing death/million by country. Starting with the 1st known infection and measure how well countries respond after 3-6 months.

I like to use this site that my local (Toronto in Canada) TV's website put up to compare between several countries. # are updated almost daily so always up-to-date.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/covid-19-curves-compare-canada-and-other-key-nations-1.4881500

The GOP & Trump's concern is only & always about the economic numbers. That can be measured too, how each countries fare with their GDP output, unemployment & debt statistics. I bet Trumpworld isn't doing well in both the short & long game economically either, but sorry I don't have a site that can do comparisons like the covid cases/deaths like I had above.

Almost certainly, but that's likely true worldwide. People without symptoms usually don't get tested, and that's something like 85% of infected and infectious people.

Infectious Disease Expert on the seriousness of Coronavirus

vil says...

The mortality rate depends on how many respirators per number of people you have in a given location.

Also on how accessible those respirators are.

Italy apparently fared worse than China. Wuhan province fared worse than Italy.

Diversity and inclusion meeting ... at Michigan school

San Marino? Iceland? Finland? New Zealand? Switzerland? Holland? Denmark? Canada? Possibly Sweden? Id give them a shot.

Funny to imagine that. Montenegro pulling the strings for once instead of being pushed away from the camera by Trump. Half the world scurrying to maps in vain, trying to find it, the other half not knowing what the fuss is about as usual. You will buy our goat milk or we will impose tariffs on your fancy gangster guns, automobiles and helicopters!

As superpowers go, the US is not too bad. Its a fairly hands-off type superpower if you compare it to say the Roman Empire or Napoleonic France. Taking a long time to even annex Puerto Rico properly.

Wondering really how China will fare. Give it 25 years. And they sure wont ask as nicely as you just did.

Here's a challenge, name a country you think would be better, or you would rather see as the worlds dominant super power.

How This Cyclist Hit 184MPH and Set the World Record

newtboy says...

If the record is 99.9% due to the equipment, give it to the engineer, not the ballast. ;-)
Eric Barone hit 141 on his own with some downhill, but no tow, no draft. That's more impressive to me, but still largely a function of his equipment.
I've never topped 40 without a draft or hill, and I used to ride 25-30 miles a day.

The fastest unassisted human powered bicycle speed is 89.5 mph. That record I can accept without an asterisk.

Edit: using that full faring recumbent bike and the dragster tow in/draft the dragster would always be the limiting factor, not the bike rider. The tow has to do with making it possible, wind resistance is the limiting factor on bicycles, but even without any getting up to that speed using human power is not possible. She needed fresh legs to keep up for under one minute under optimal conditions.
I think pro riders don't go for this record because they don't see it as a legitimate riding record, just a dangerous equipment test.

BSR said:

I'm sure the tow, to get her up to speed, has to do with reducing wind and weight. The addition of the gearing needed to get her to up to those speeds without assistance would be ridiculous.

The point is, she broke a previous record using the same rules as the first person. If a pro wants to break the record he (or she) can follow the same rules. I have a feeling not many pros would take the risk and would be happy being on the lower shelf or different category. She accepted the challenge. AND SHE'S NOT EVEN A PRO!

Why Everyone is Going to Iceland Lately

StukaFox says...

Another reason? Icelandair offers dirt-cheap fares to Europe from the US, provided you're willing to transfer planes in Iceland. They allow you to stay in Iceland for a week or so and then continue on to your destination without charging you any additional fees.

Denzel Washington speaks out: Where are the Fathers

bobknight33 says...

Government policies have done more harm to blacks than anything else.

John Ehrlichman from the Nixon days. Damn near 50 years ago.

The Housing Act of 1937 Otherwise celebrated for making homeownership accessible to white people by guaranteeing their loans, which led to Redlining. RED Line property which poor neighborhoods ( poor black area) were not allow to get stimulus money.

How fare back do you want to go?

The past is the past.

For the last 50 years Blacks have gained more and more equality and today have no reason not to succeed other than Democrat policies keeping poor people poor.

Denzel says "the system is rigged..."

John Ehrlichman in 1994 stated "... the drug war was simply a way to vilify African Americans and the anti-war left."

So it is clear that the people in power directed the nations institutions and resources by the creation of laws and policies which resulted in millions of people being incarcerated. Then as Denzel clearly explains generations of young black males ended up fatherless and the cycle repeats itself.

Cop Who Shot Walter Scott Pleads Guilty, Gets 20 Years

Mordhaus says...

He will likely still be in PC lockup, cops don't fare well in prison.

newtboy said:

It's only not murder because plea deals usually involve lesser charges that a conviction could.
The DA was going to try him again for murder and murder 2, but accepted this deal with the feds to avoid another possibly hung jury or even acquittal. That's how plea deals work.
I found it amazing he willingly took a 20 year sentence considering how cops usually fare in courts, I only wish it was in State prison gen pop instead of club fed's special unit.

I fully agree that the expectations for justice against bad cops are depressingly low, and I agree this outcome was far better than the average yet still not fully justice.

If it looks like a murder, if its sentenced like a murder...why isn't it murder?

Gotta agree that this stinks of "separate but equal".

Good that the outcome was better than expected, bad that the expectation is so low.

New Rule: Fee F**king

Asmo says...

So basically you're not to blame if you contractually agree to a shitty service and then forget to maintain the conditions? There's a good reason I do my credit business through reputable establishments with reasonable T&C and interest rates rather than Bruce the leg breaker at the local fucking pub... Because Bruce is a cunt and his T&C are ass rape...

I have 55 days interest free on my platinum card and I've not spent a single cent in interest in about 16 years. Mostly cos my wife would kick my ass harder than the bank, but it's a matter of discipline rather than the bank being a pack of pricks. I agreed to the terms, I need to meet them.

There's probably a fair point to be made somewhere in there about usuary rates re: credit cards, but the airline bit is a fucking silly...

Budget airlines offer everything as a pay for after the ticket price service because people want cheap fairs. In some cases, it's actually cheaper to fly today than it was 30 years ago in the 80's... (http://www.smh.com.au/business/aviation/international-air-fares-at-30year-low-20160422-gocr1r.html)

Well, funny that, people don't want to pay for a premium product and they get a shitty one that nickel and dimes them to death to try and keep the margins up (aka "staying in business").

You can look at plenty of markets where cheap, shit products are now the standard because people either won't or can't pay for quality ones. It's the entire reason why many industries outsource to foreign wage slaves and why cheap Chinese shit shows up everywhere as well known and reliable brands go out of business.

Yes, the US certainly has a problem with a lack of oversight on various industries which allows them to get away with a lot, but the customer/end user has to take some responsibility as well.
