Sir! What Are Your Orders?

CNN anchor reads Survivor's Statement on air

bareboards2 says...

I have also linked this in the description, so people don't have to read the comments to find this link:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/6/6/1534962/-The-daunting-and-powerful-statement-a-Stanford-victim-reads-to-her-rapist-in-court-goes-viral

Here is part of the full statement that was excised for time -- part of where she responds to the defendant's statement, point by point:

You said, Being drunk I just couldn’t make the best decisions and neither could she.

Alcohol is not an excuse. Is it a factor? Yes. But alcohol was not the one who stripped me, fingered me, had my head dragging against the ground, with me almost fully naked. Having too much to drink was an amateur mistake that I admit to, but it is not criminal. Everyone in this room has had a night where they have regretted drinking too much, or knows someone close to them who has had a night where they have regretted drinking too much. Regretting drinking is not the same as regretting sexual assault. We were both drunk, the difference is I did not take off your pants and underwear, touch you inappropriately, and run away. That’s the difference.

You said, If I wanted to get to know her, I should have asked for her number, rather than asking her to go back to my room.

I’m not mad because you didn’t ask for my number. Even if you did know me, I would not want be in this situation. My own boyfriend knows me, but if he asked to finger me behind a dumpster, I would slap him. No girl wants to be in this situation. Nobody. I don’t care if you know their phone number or not.

You said, I stupidly thought it was okay for me to do what everyone around me was doing, which was drinking. I was wrong.

Again, you were not wrong for drinking. Everyone around you was not sexually assaulting me. You were wrong for doing what nobody else was doing, which was pushing your erect dick in your pants against my naked, defenseless body concealed in a dark area, where partygoers could no longer see or protect me, and own my sister could not find me. Sipping fireball is not your crime. Peeling off and discarding my underwear like a candy wrapper to insert your finger into my body, is where you went wrong. Why am I still explaining this.

Stephen Fry on Political Correctness

enoch says...

@ChaosEngine

i do not see anyone here defending anything.

now maybe we can view stephen's commentary "dismissive and belittling" as @entr0py pointed out,but i think the deeper issue was prefaced quite succinctly by stephen in his characterization of american, and western societies,as being "infantilized".

where words have become the final bastion of totality in communication and are judged strictly on a word by word basis.so much so that some on the left have been pushing harder and harder to have certain words removed from our lexicon, because they represent negative thoughts/feelings/actions or they may represent a trauma,or horrific violent memory for some people.

but this is the wrong approach.
excising words will not erase those feelings/thoughts/emotions.this will just force people to come up or use different terminology to express those feelings/thoughts.actions that once had words to at least to attempt to express those horrors and/or offenses.

which will just equate to a whole new slew of verbiage being found offensive and in dire need of being castrated from our collective vocabulary.

yet the left (extreme left i grant) appears hell bent on not only attempting to control speech but to also judge those who DO use speech that they find offensive.

this is censorship with prejudice and to claim otherwise is the lie.

just look at your first comment.
you "used" to like stephen fry's opinion, until he became callous and dismissive with what?

words.

but do you REALLY think his attitude and compassion towards those who have suffered emotional trauma is truly dismissive?

well..i do not think so.i have spoken to you enough times to have a modicum of understandings in regards to you,as a person, that you have far more depth of character.

yet it is the WORDS that have hung you up.

look man, words are inert.they are things that are only given life, meaning and context when we add our own subjectivity to them.

words are inadequate.they will ALWAYS be inadequate.
which is why we admire and praise those of us who have a command of words that can reach into our own understandings and extract meaning in a way that blossoms like a spring flower and can create worlds in which we can play, and even share with other people.

i am intimately aware of this deficiency.i do not have an economy of words, and only on rare occasions can i relay, convey and express with ANY form of reductionism.

i struggle to express not only my opinion, but the intent, humanity and compassion of my opinion.

if the extreme left gets their way,the tools we have to express ourselves becomes lesser.

and in the process,WE become lesser.because the tools for dissent, debate, discussion and even..ironically..to expose the more venal and bigoted of our society, will have been reduced to words that offend nobody.

there is danger here, and no good will come from it.no matter if the intent sounds just and the goal compassionate.

freedom of speech is the right to speak freely.
to espouse our opinions, philosophy and yes,our bigotry and prejudice, with legal immunity, but NOT social impunity.

so while we have a right to free speech.
we do not have a right to not be offended, and maybe we need to be offended sometimes.to shake us from our own self-induced apathy and our adoration of digital hallucinations.

so when the westboro baptist church says the most hateful, vitriolic and disgusting admonishments, all in the name of god.
we can be offended by them, and then ridicule them relentlessly.

would stripping words from the english language prevent this group from espousing their own brand of hate?

of course not.they would just find new words.

so what do we do then?
make words illegal?
criminally libel?

so don't judge mr fry too harshly.
he is just pointing to the dangers of controlling speech and the new trend of the perpetually offended.

the extreme right attempts to control morality, and there is serious danger in that practice.
the extreme left attempts to control how we communicate, and hence how we interact, and there is great danger in that as well.

Understanding The Pedophile's Brain

newtboy says...

10-15 IQ points BELOW AVERAGE?!? That means gorillas and birds may be more intelligent.

If this study is correct, and pedophilia is a brain disorder, that means by law we need to excise all pedophiles from prison and put them in treatment/mental hospitals. Suddenly, prosecuting pedophiles is a violation of the American disabilities act.
Putting people in prison/to death for physical deformities is not what we do in a free society.
I hope these findings are a step towards an effective treatment.

It does seem that we, as a society, are so disturbed by their actions that we create restrictions for them on release from prison that invariably put them back in, restrictions like where they can live, work, walk, who they can talk to, often not allowed to use computers, etc. It seems to me that if we're going to hold their crimes against them for life in that way, we should maybe simply make it a death penalty crime and quit pretending we think we can rehabilitate them when we don't really think that.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Abortion Laws

Yes. It was a long, painful slog to excise chingalera from the body. It was, in fact, the reason I started posting, because I just couldn't sit back and watch him make the sift an ugly place with little or no pushback.
Lantern, while I often disagreed with him vehemently, USUALLY didn't devolve into a 5 year old little girl who just had her ice cream taken away, ranting, screaming, cursing, and attacking anyone in earshot. It did happen, but not often. I realized one day that I seemed to be one of the few actually responding to his posts, so I ignored him, and he left soon afterwards. I thought the same thing might happen with bob, but clearly not. I shouldn't be so surprised though....my bad for expecting reasonable, rational, or even adult behavior from the die hard extreme right winger who spends his time on a left leaning site.

VoodooV said:

@newtboy

and how long did it take, and how painful was it to get the "Chingalera situation" resolved? How many sifts got Ching-jacked before something was finally done?

Hell, we couldn't even get Lantern out of here, he seems to have left of his own accord, (thanks btw, for I know you had a hand in inducing him to leave) but any day, he could come back and troll again.

Easy answer (he kinda mentions it):

End of fucking story.

ps. You can tell the type of parent she is that she's so busy off crusading to save people that her daughter is getting high and drunk easily. Lemme guess, extremely strict parent who has closeted her kid so much that she's gone off the rails after getting a taste?

I think "Blame Canada" really needs to be linked to this sift (but have no idea how to do so... = ) because this woman is Sheila Broflowski...

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Front Page (Sift Talk Post)

gorillaman says...

Obviously I've been hungering for fuller access to the new navigation bar, with all its sexy live content, and that's great.

Haven't we lost a lot of information again? Who wants to have to click on every video's thumbnail to see its length, channels, views, tags and so on. Presumably the loss of the ability to display a video's comments without the need to visit its page isn't a permanent excision.

And have you started piling up a lot of buttockry on the bottom of the page again? 'Top Sifters of the Week', not interested, 'Top New Comments', sure, in the sidebar.

My ardency for the beta video page is undiminished, but there's little so far that I see to recommend the new front page, save its access to the excellent top bar.

Libertarian Atheist vs. Statist Atheist

blankfist says...

You don't think the roads we have now aren't toll roads? Every gallon of gas you buy has an excise tax on it that pays into the highway trust fund.

Also, the reason why we don't have roads without government is because it's illegal.

And is it leaching off YOU if I'm forced to pay for those services. Hmmm. That's not very sound logic.

newtboy said:

Could...but don't. With the exception of 'toll roads', which usually use public funds and always use public services to build...so nevermind, not toll roads either.
So please, stop leaching off us 'statists' and quit using our roads, firemen, police, electricity, water, and internet. Once you've done all that, and moved to your utopian island community in Alaska I'll start listening to you again....Oh, but you won't be on the internet or have access to phones or the mail, so....

Libertarian Atheist vs. Statist Atheist

blankfist says...

@VoodooV: "Every one of these youtube crusaders are comfortably enjoying the perks of a system they despise."

What perks? Like roads and firemen? You know, it's not like we couldn't have those things without government. And those kinds of services are only a small portion of the federal budget. In fact, from all the excise taxes collected on gasoline, tobacco and alcohol, they'd cover the roads completely, which costs around $60 billion annually. In fact, things like the EPA, Dept. of Trans, NASA, Dept. of Edu, all cost less than the revenue the federal government categorizes as "other." Look it up: http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/historicals

So what about all the wars and militarism? Is that, too, a perk? And the prison industrial complex that locks up 1% of our population? What are these perks you speak of?

Even Ayn Rand took gov't assistance.

I love it when statists bring this up. I personally am not an Objectivist, and find lots of flaws with their ideology, but this is a cheap blow. Obviously it shows the economic illiteracy of most statists. For one, she's forced to pay into social security, so therefore why shouldn't she receive some of it back? And second, if you spend more than a couple seconds reading about U.S. monetary policy, you'd know that the purchasing power of the dollar is reduced over time due to inflation, and hence savings are always impacted. This should alarm you instead of excite you.

The whole thing is infested with logical fallacies: false equivalencies, ad homs, strawmen, and even a no true scotsman thrown in for shits and giggles.

By all means don't take any time to point out which things he said were these things. No, that'd be helpful, and we wouldn't want to cloudy any appeals to emotion with pesky things like fact and well thought out rebuttals.

they spend all this time criticizing the problems of gov't and NEVER ONCE demonstrate how it would work without these systems.

I think there are plenty who do. It's just that statists don't accept those answers, or any answers that don't emulate the current status quo systems they're accustomed to. I'm not interested in replacing public schools with another bureaucracy.

Orcas Vs Shark: Killer Whales Take Down Tiger Shark

chicchorea says...

...you obviously feel quite strongly about an issue.

However, it is a nonissue here.

Ad hom attacks are unaccetable in the Sift and are actionable in the vein of which you have experienced albeit unreservedly so.

r_m was merely enjoying themselves as you somewhat inferred, may it be you do likewise.

Respective to the excising of the fins, this was my thinking as well with uncertainty as to the intent.

SquidCap said:

Total bullcrap, this is one of the reason sharks are being poached increasingly. Just as we started to come down on those numbers, idiots like you give the poachers a new reason. If this was attempt at sarcasm, know that there is a sarcasm button for it. Dumbass...

Orcas are very intelligent, fin removal is definitely deliberate.

Mitt Romney Weighs In on President Obama's Second Term

VoodooV says...

Virtually everything political is a choice between the lesser of two evils. That's why I can't stand people who dismiss it and wimp out of the process, claiming that both sides are equally bad. It's a cop out. Everyone has a internal value/judgement system and one side is going to be the slightest bit less-detestable than the other and that's the one you pick. If you don't like it, write someone in.

Too many people treat elections like horse races as if you get some sort of prize for picking a winner. A friend of mine a while back told me that he hadn't picked a winning president in the last 2 elections.

My response: So?

He (supposedly) picked the person he thought would do the best job. It's not a bet on who will win.

Hell even in my utopia I described earlier where private money has successfully been excised from elections and parties are abolished, we're still going to have candidates we don't completely agree with. Nothing is going to change there, but you still pick the one you think will do better or you write someone in.

There are no shining white knights, nor are there villains with furled mustaches and black top hats. Life is hard and complex with countless grey areas, deal with it.

chingalera says...

Seems a logical next-step to fastidiously render the 'really tiny minority in our society' into dog food. The 'elite' are a cancer: Irradiate them, excise them, and place their offspring in the prisons they've built for us.

To these unseen perpetrators of the destruction of the planet and the souls and spirits of us regular folks should be delivered a message for future generations in the form of say, a monument. Yes, a monument similar to the wall of names of the fallen in wars (lest we forget)-

Here includes the names of all the wealthiest families the fascist human refuse that they are, their offspring, their legacy of anti-creation, anti-humanity, anti-life-

These people need to be annihilated, and the memory of their existence forever burned into the collective unconscious.

Destroy the fruits of their crimes and most importantly, end their bloodlines. Bury them, burn them, kill them all.

Otherwise, the planets' fucked.

Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?

Bruti79 says...

This is a false or misleading statement. The reasons for some Canadians having to wait or not being able to have a doctor are different. Canada has had a terrible drain on it's medical system with doctors and nurses going down to the US, because they make more money there. This has lead to new programs to entice them to stay in Canada. It looks like they have been working, but it's a 10 year study and we need to see the numbers.

As a Canadian who has been though the healthcare system in Ontario, and had family members who've had been through health care in Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, Halifax and Newfoundland.Labradour, I can tell you the parts that work and the parts that don't.

I'm a type I diabetic and I've had cancer twice. I've had a sarcoma in my saliva gland and as a result of radiation therapy, I've had melanoma skin cancer crop up on my body as well. I've had four major surgeries on my body. Two of them were serious complicated nervous system surgeries or lymphatic resecctions. I've been through my fair share of Canadian health care.

First things first. It's not a national healthcare. Anyone saying national healthcare doesn't know what they're talking about. The provinces and territories have their own health care. Granted, the territories get a lot more help from the Federal Gov't, but the health needs of people in Ontario are different from those in Manitoba.

Let's get into the brass taxes. I've had the nerve surgery and radiation therapy that was done on my face evaluated at a hospital in West Virgina as part of a study to compare American HC vs. Canadian HC. For my first surgery, I got to choose my doctor, I was given a list. They recommended one doctor, who was an expert in North America for nerve surgery, but he was recovering from a surgery of his own. They suggested I wait for him to be ready, but if I wanted to proceed, I could wait if I wanted.

I waited and surprise, no facial paralysis. I then had to do 30 days of intense radiation therapy in my parotid bed, to make sure they got it all.

I paid a total of $300 dollars in parking. I also have private health insurance for diabetic supplies, which means any medication I had to get to deal with the after effects of radiation had an 85% payback.

Years later when the effects of radiation had settled and I had a tumour form from the radiation, I had gone to my family doctor, saw a specialist the next day and then within the week I had an excision done. It came back positive and within a week of that, I was given a sentinel node biopsy to see if it had spread.

It had.

Within a month of the first examination, I had a full lymphatic ressection of my left leg and groin done. This wasn't as complicated as the facial nerve surgery, so I got a list and a suggestion of who to do the surgery.

That came back clean, but I now deal with a lot of complications from that.

That surgery cost me nothing.

In West Virgina at a hospital (they didn't tell me which one they used.) The total for all the exams (CT, MRI, etc.) the surgery and the radiation therapy came out to $275,000. Give or take.

This is why it drives me nuts when I see people get things wrong about Canada. We have problems, oh yes we do. For example, don't be over the age of 65 in BC or Quebec. The diagnostics training in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland if pretty terrible. But, I got to choose my doctor, and I saw everyone really quick. Why? Because you don't fuck with melanoma.

So, I'm sorry Trancecoach, I saw that video you linked. The guy lost a lot of credibility at "Communist State of Canada." You're already skewing your message to say something. You are just plain wrong about health care in Canada, the way you talk about. I am living proof of how well it works.

I'm a self employed photographer and the most I've ever had to pay was for parking at the hospital. That was the $300 dollars. I paid my taxes and that paid for my health care. If I didn't, and if other Canadians didn't, I would not be here, as with many other Canadians.

Critique us for the things we do shitty, but I have yet to see anyone do that. I see talking points and misinformation from people just spreading false info.

Get your facts straight. I know how it works in Ontario the best. But, I also know for a vast majority of the other country. I can tell you Saskatchewan has had an exodus of nurses, but that's not bad health care system. That's a gov't system that can't keep nurses in the province. If we can keep doctors and nurses, the system works great.

The guy you linked to, most of his sources for data are absolute crap and he misleads a lot of his talking points. This stupid lottery doctor that happened was because it was an isolated town in the wilderness and there was only one doctor left after the other passed away. So yes, he had to do a lottery for people so he wouldn't get swamped, unless it was an emergency. It was a town, I believe about 10,000 people, but I'm not sure on that.

Trancecoach said:

The US government pays a lot for healthcare. When you work for a major university (as I have you), you became acquainted with how much funding their university hospital gets for research from the government. And in countries like Canada, where you can't even find a doctor and have to wait months to see one, of course the spending will be less as they have fewer medical providers and fewer variety of services. But your point is well taken. The US government does spend more "tax" dollars per capita than many of these other socialist healthcare utopias.

Rape Joke Debate

bareboards2 says...

@eric579

Someone elsewhere wrote about murder -- how murder is everywhere.

So imagine you are in a dark basement of a comedy club, surrounded by people, some of whom you KNOW are unconvicted and uncaught sociopathic killing-for-fun murderers. Including the comic on the stage. A small percentage of those in the room, absolutely, but you don't know who is who.

And the comic makes a "joke" about those murderers coming for YOU. Not in a general sense. A very specific, you pissed off the comic, so let's target Eric. That guy right there. Who is going to have to walk to his car later. And who is going to drive home and could be followed by one or more of those murderers.

That is the "rape" joke that needs to be excised from our society. And that "rape" joke has been defended and defended and defended as "freedom of speech."

I'm all for freedom of speech. But as long as there are a significant number of men out there who laugh at that "joke", we have a serious problem. When the men in the room don't boo that comic, and instead laugh and then defend that comic, we have a problem.

And that is what this debate is about. Calling on all men to speak up when this kind of rape "joke" goes down.

I think.

BIGGEST CYST ON THE PLANET | Operation "Kill George"

VoodooV says...

Wonder why they didn't pack the wound with gauze so that the cyst heals from the bottom up and reduces the chance of it coming back.

Im still surprised they didn't open him up more to make it easier to drain the cyst and so that he could get the cyst wall out. chicks dig scars yo.

It has to be laziness...or negligence. It's not like having a cyst excised is a major expense.

I still find it amusing that for all our medical technology, we still have to drain cysts by essentially squeezing them like a zit.
