Chocolate factory explosion in Pennsylvania caught on camera

Khufu says...

Delivering news of death and destruction with a smirk and a tone like he's talking about a baseball game. Fox News is like a comedy about a dystopian future where everyone is an asshole.

Spinning Hologram Demo

lucky760 says...

Somebody get that technology some acetaminophen because that's pretty sick.

I wondered how we were supposed to achieve the holographic building-sized billboards from such dystopian futures as presented in Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell, and this is an interesting start!

What if we get really good at drone AI and batteries?

newtboy says...

Keep in mind, top secret military tech is usually around 10 years ahead of civilian tech. That means they are probably more refined, but not as ubiquitous.
This could be step one for Skynet's final solution.
Hey @notarobot, wanna kill all humans?

*promote a nice and scary dystopian "future".

notarobot said:

Well that was terrifying.

All of the technologies needed to build drones like this already exist, even if they aren't quite that refined.... yet.

There's 10 of us and only 2 of you

Agreed. Hopefully, the rumoured tv show actually gets made.

So much for keeping temperature rise below 2 degrees above preindustrial averages (or even the Paris 1.5 degree goal) being "safe". We're at 1.2 degrees and rising last year, and it seems like Ragnarok is upon us.
This is pretty good evidence that the anthropogenic extinction event is well under way, not something to fear might happen in a dystopian future. Both the natural food web and agriculture are dependent on insects. A 3/4 reduction is probably at or beyond the tipping point.
This business is going to get out of control, and we'll be lucky to live through it.
Fuck. We all better call up Jim Bakker for some apocalypse food buckets quick.

Why Australia should reject Gay Marriage

noims says...

a) I wonder how many people decided whether or not to watch a video with this title based on their current beliefs.

b) Imagine a dystopian future in which bigots are so discriminated against, they're not even allowed to marry other bigots for fear of raising bigot children. Wouldn't that be unfair.

c) I'm so smug that I upvoted this. Smuggety smug smug. Yeah, but at least it's better than being a cunt. To use the vernacular.

Police have no CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY to protect YOU!

GenjiKilpatrick says...

Hah, "had it coming"?

Do you jerks consult with Jesus and the Grim Reaper before murdering unarmed, no-threatening citizens?

The worst type of person is the type that can't admit when they are WRONG.

Have you ever seen the movie Judge Dredd? You would LOVE that movie.

"Joseph Dredd is an American law enforcement officer in the dystopian future city of Mega-City One.

He is a "street judge", empowered to summarily arrest, convict, sentence, and execute criminals."

yeah...none of those people had it coming...just cops randomly choosing people, mostly based on their skin color...

dude, what size blinders are you wearing?

The reason we live in dystopian future... today... Excellent fan video released on the internet, stirs up a reinterest in a shitty old intellectual property, people who profit from this buzzes response? Take the video away from the masses. F U, aholes.

I just... I get it, but it doesn't feel good. It doesn't feel like the internet I voted for! lol

Neil deGrasse Tyson on genetically modified food

I love 'Utopia' and I can add the Canadian science-fiction show 'Continuum' to that list, which criticizes the rise of corporations and portrays a dystopian future in which corporations have taken over the government and police force. Season 3 deals with a villainous corporation not so subtly named Sonmanto and also addresses the issue of GMO.

billpayer said:

btw. You guys should all watch UTOPIA

(joke)

(but seriously it's a cool sci-fi series on channel 4 right now and hypothesizes on scenarios like Genetic Modification, Agribusiness, etc.)

Democracy Now! - "A Massive Surveillance State" Exposed

Are you having hot flashes, as well? Cravings for pickles and ice cream? Feel like crying sometimes for no reason at all, or hearing voices in your Wheaties?

Just trying to figure you out. Lots of good and bad info flying around, accordingly spun by the provider's worldview. There exists a fundamental truth here, however, and although it's possible to miss it amongst the din of spin, your position seems to be as ephemeral as your cut&paste cache. The enemy of your enemy doesn't have to be your friend. This isn't just another bogus scandal. I wouldn't even classify it as a scandal. It's much bigger than that. Dystopian future, today. Pick a fucking side already.

Sorry Mr. Fisk, I can't upvote this. This scandal is starting to feel just as bogus as the rest of them.

Just saw it - pretty good gritty SF flick. The interesting thing about SF is that it often reflects on the culture and politics of today. I couldn't help thinking that this was a wholly Libertarian dystopian future. Everyone packing heat and using it to solve problems - and nary a government agency in sight. I mean, absolutely no government.

Nothing invokes a positive thought-exercise like an affluent, depressing world in which every surface has been turned into a screen with notifications telling you what to do or think, atrophied interpersonal relations, and muted emotions and sensations

I know, much more likely it's going to be a dingy, depressing world in which every surface has been turned into a screen with notifications telling you what to do or think, atrophied interpersonal relations, and emotions that haven't been muted, but diverted towards the convenient scapegoat of the hour, all brought to you by nearly flawless software from a variety of companies with happy-sounding names like Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

You know, sorta like the world I see when I look out my window...

Dark sci-fi brooding aside, I guess I don't see any really revolutionary technology here. Most of this kind of UI and network integration already exists, or is coming in the next year or two. There's a lot of paper-thin borderless screens and a couple augmented reality projections that are still a ways off, but not really that far either -- I'd expect both to be available before 2020.

This dystopian future is already here today!
