This Is Not Yellow (by Vsauce)

2:50 - Four hour exposure? Seriously? Surely, ten minutes in the darkest of nights would overexpose any image unless you used a really narrow aperture (and possibly even then)?

I wish. Night time photography would be a hell of a lot easier if this were true.

It's not. Four hours on a dark night seems reasonable to me. Depends on the camera settings used, of course, but if you keep the ISO low and use a reasonable aperture for good depth of field four hours sounds reasonable. The main problem with this is sensor bloom from the heat of the batteries and circuit boards in the camera itself.

Bane breaks batmans back in the comics...literally makes the guy a quadriplegic....seems like one way to give the dark night series a solid end

Big Bill Hell

Since it seems that your only intention is to use this site to promote your own material, perhaps you should consider making your next sift a sponsored video submission.

Hey sifters, votes seem to have stabilized at around 70, so before we get booted out of the top 15 I want to thank you all for your attention and comments and to let you know that you bought us our first 2000 views for Big Bill Hell.
These are the first small steps for the project. When we make it big, we shall say: FIRST THERE WAS THE SIFT.
Oh, and a special thank you to kulpims for the submit and to choggie for the encouragements. I shall read them on those dark nights of the soul when I feel like barfing rather than chop footage all day just to get 3 more seconds of video done.
See you in few months

I wanted to wait till I had a couple cups of coffee in me and a clear, morning mind before reading that.

It's a good one. You're on the right track, man. Hope you and your paramour get the time to make a video out of that one.

By the way, you've inspired me to do the same with some of my work.

And thanks for listening to me when...I really needed a kindly ear...on what was, for me, a very dark night.

Cheers.

since i noticed your on here right now,at this moment.and also because you wont create a facebook (boooo).
here is one of my older but newly posted:
shattered mirrors

memories stir..
and begin to fall,
like droplets of rain..
upon my unprepared mind.
thundering..
cascading..
a cacophony on a tin roof,
the memories come.
icy and cold...
sharp,
like razor's caressing tender flesh,
viciously..
violently..
opening forgotten,
buried..
and long scarred over wounds.
memories of past..
indiscretions..
indifferences..
cruelties.
flooding the haunted halls of my mind.
rending the landscape of my soul.
exposing long forgotten..
guilts..
shames..
manipulations..
they come to mock me,
to taunt me with their derision,
and righteous fury.
naked and raw,
i am flayed to the bone,
by their admonitions..
and accusations.
they curse me..
condemn me..
as they eviscerate my tender sensibilities.
"how dare i forget"
is their mantra.
how could i have forgotten?
i remember..
i remember now..
i remember it all now..
and my heart weeps at the crushing weight of it all.

What if Earth had rings like Saturn?

jmd says...

Max, thats one part of the what if equation. In the above renderings, chances are the ring is a solid mask effect and not actually rendered particles. The pictures from space show almost dark night in the shadow of the rings. In reality, it might not get that dark...

That being said, the rings would cast a gigantic shadow over a section of the earth on a day by day bases. While it wouldn't be a frozen tundra, it most certainly would create enough change in temperature to change the current jet streams dramatically. Not only air temperatures, but water temperatures as well. The hot and cold areas on the planet would most certainly be different, and if the rings reflected light heated up other parts of the globe, I would imagine our weather patterns would be quite violent.

Then there is the physical side of things, I am sure rocks from the ring fall into the atmosphere on a constant bases.

Uncovering the True Structure of Andromeda Galaxy

deathcow says...

Andromeda is fun to observe in binoculars, small or large telescopes. Easy target. It is one of the few naked-eye galaxies. On a good crisp dark night you can see Andromeda just by looking up in the right place. This galaxy is so close, so big, that it appears 3 times wider than a full moon does. To the naked eye, its more like a distended smudge.
