For Pacific Mole Crabs It's Dig or Die | Deep Look

Many of my childhood summers were spent in Santa Cruz, and digging up sand crabs (mole crabs) was a daily routine for me. Just look for the bubbles in the wet sand.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Daylight Saving Time

sanderbos says...

Here's a vote for daylight saving time (with bi-yearly switch) from the Netherlands (mentioning the latitude is important I guess):

With all year standard time, it would become light at 3:30 in the morning in June (with accompanying waking bird sounds). How many extra deaths would that get from sleepy car drivers.

With all year daylight savings (which I would opt for if forced to choose, long evenings FTW indeed), in December it would only get light at 10:00 am...

The people most common complaint against the switch is that people who like it just have to change their daily routine on their own, but that's not really possible with standard work, shop opening etc. hours.

Mass Incarceration in the US - Vlogbrothers

scheherazade says...

Unfortunately "arrested" affects you almost as much as "convicted".

Eg. The police automatically notify your employer when you are arrested.
It's a common story where someone is let out soon after their arrest, then shows up at work only to find out they're no longer employed.

I was surprised that they left out the overall figure of 1 in 18 men in the U.S. is in jail / parole / being processed / in the system, whatever.

Also, roughly half of people in jail are in for a victimless crime.

Keep in mind that there are ~5000 federal laws, plus a wad of state laws (per state), county laws, city laws, etc.
Practically all laws are limits on behavior, and they do not involve any victims.

An exhaustive inventory of any given person's daily routine turns up multiple offenses per day. Everyone is guilty. Anyone can go to jail.

I think the reason people enjoy these videos is because it showcases an individual that is so obviously enjoying what they are doing. They are so content in their daily routines that they can be playful & not caught up in negative emotions stemming from their 'lot' in life.

The reality is that this man is seems happy at his work, and I think many people gravitate towards that because they wish they could find the same.

This is far from the first video I've seen where a person doing what Americans would consider a menial job, excels at something Americans would pay to see as a "performance".

This scene is based on a true story: Hachikō
"In 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took in Hachikō, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. During his owner's life, Hachikō greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachikō was waiting. Every day for the next nine years the dog waited at Shibuya station."

LSD and Magic Mushroom Drugtest. English Subtitles

braschlosan says...

I wasn't sure if you were serious or not, but I'll bite -

Everyone was a slacker at some point. When you were a young child you did very little to help the family. When you did start to have responsibility you didn't understand why at first and only did the things because you were told to.
Its a gradual change into a person who understands that certain things have to be taken care of for, your own sake and, the sake of your family. To think someones life is automatically fucked up because they are a slacker is disgenuine.

Are you implying that between say 13-23 you didn't too stupid irresponsible things that would make others worry about you for your own selfish pleasure? I doubt anyone could deny they were more selfish than not during part of their life.

I am not saying drugs are required to make drastic realizations. If your daily routine has little or no changes you will always think in the same basic pattern and it takes some external event to change this. It could be a new job, a new love, a death etc. Taking certain drugs lets you control when these changes in perception occur rather than being a slave to fate.

No where in my original reply did I say anyone (myself or others) had to depend on drugs to make decisions. I stated two basic ideas - drugs can help you to make changes and that everyone should experience them at least once in their life. I also didn't say that the single time the person did them would create some epic change.

Something happened to you that caused a strong sensitivity to what I said. Maybe it was me telling you what to do, maybe someone you knew used drugs and became a loser, maybe my speech pattern reminds you of someone bad. I can't say what it is but if your strong reaction is genuine then I am sorry to dig up such anger.

Not all drugs are created equally. I would like you to view this chart http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Drug_danger_and_dependence.svg Notice that LSD has a lower dependency than pretty much everything, including nicotine and caffeine.
Secondly the average dosage is between 60 and 180 MICROgrams. Do you understand how small that is? It is essentially impossible for it to be adulterated. You could mix it with drain cleaner and and the amount you are ingesting would not cause damage.
The industry accepted lethal dose is 15,000 micrograms, which would be FIFTEEN PAGES of paper you would have to ingest. I don't think you could fit that all in your mouth

I am not convincing you personally to take it but be aware that a significant scientific breakthroughs in business/technology/science have taken place while the person was on some form of drugs. You should also be aware that most artists (both audio and physical) use drugs to create the inspiration for the works you enjoy.
One time I figured out why fire on the head of a match is the shape that it is and how the flame is constructed. Months later I explained how I perceived it to someone qualified and they said even though I lacked the proper technical terms I had gotten it right. I was very happy about that.

Like I said previously, not all drugs are created equally. LSD does not make you feel anything extra, it only enhances what you are already seeing or feeling. It gives you the ability to super focus on details you overlooked previously or zoom out and take a large amount of data in at once then process it.

I think my reply will be lost on you but hopefully someone else is reading this and will gain something from it. If it means anything to you I have taken acid only twice in the last two years.

>> ^schlub:

Since when is not deciding to being a slacker a revelation? Your life/lives must be pretty fucked up if you depend on hallucinogenics to make your life decisions for you. This notion that drugs expand your mind or make you see things more clearly is complete and utter bullshit.
>> ^braschlosan:
Because of LSD my little brother had the revelation to start doing well in his final year of high school and try to make his parents life easier.
Then while in his first year of college he had the revelation about many parts of life and decided to study hard and play hard too. Now he has fun on the weekends and is getting great grades. The combination of the two has given him infinite self esteem.
During the summer break after his first year of college he had another LSD revelation about taking drugs. Now he rarely takes them (in high school he was a big pothead and E-Tard), when he does take them its planned out ahead of time for a special event. He's not even 20 yet and has a "wise" outlook on just about everything.
I have had similar life altering changes because of LSD that I'd rather not share here,
I agree with Enoch.

for those who may be a tad uptight hallucinagenics should be mandatory.
if only once in your lifetime.

Seeing the World at the Speed of Light

kceaton1 says...

>> ^GeeSussFreeK:

>> ^garmachi:
It's been many years since I studied physics. What does the lowercase gamma in the bottom left represent?

Me to, I think the answer is in here, but eff if I can remember.
Edit: ok I think it is the "Lorentz factor" . 7.089 Lorentz factor is 0.990 ratio to the speed of light (or very very close)

Lorentz sounds like it to me too. There are only a few other choices it could be, but I don't see them really relating very well to the what's in the video (gamma brightness for the "video", or gamma radiation factor from nuclear sciences--both I highly doubt).

Lorentz transformations (which is linked above by @GeeSussFreeK ) would be the way you would calculate many of the dilation effects caused by relativistic effects traveling near the speed of light.

Traveling at the speed of light you would have a pinpoint in front and in back. The light up front, the size of a point and basically nothing behind, as it would be shifted to very low levels of radiation. If you're going at the speed of light you wouldn't be doing any calculations as time has stopped, but from your vantage point everything happens at the same speed. As you slow down though far from the speed of light, in less than a second you instantly see things change all around you depending on how long of course you had been going at the speed of light (if you had been going that speed for 10 years you won't see too much; but, what about one billion years--can you imagine...).

But, to you a second was still one second even at that speed, or any speed, even as time slowed down the closer you got to the speed of light. Everyone else will of course still count their seconds the same as well. Hence, relativity.

If you did go that fast, yet had mass you would be facing some HUGE problems. At the front you would find a tremendous amount of energy (I'd guess all of it would be shifted to the highest energy level; one huge one-dimensional jet of gamma radiation) and at infinite amounts. In other words, it's impossible to do it. that is why a lot of Sci-Fi uses space warping/tearing/etc... to connect yourself to another place, like a wormhole; or bend space in front and back of you like Star Trek and use warp.

Gotta love Einstein and his little revelation--and all revelations in science or otherwise that add to the understanding, the expanses created, broadening our horizons, windows to the wondrous mountains of the mind put into view, and all of reality's grandeurs still there to be conquered and our dreams explored. It makes this world just a bit more interesting and worth bothering to get up every morning and go about our daily routines.

I have an android phone, but I use to...drum roll please...CALL PEOPLE! That's about it haha.

The podcasts that are important to my daily routine are: Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast, and The Joe Rogan Experience as well as Marc Maron's podcast.
In reply to this comment by kymbos:
I've just gotten into podcasts, having gotten an android smartphone. Are there any podcasts you would particularly recommend? I'd appreciate the leads.

In reply to this comment by rottenseed:
I know. I got an email from the podcast saying that he was on there. Haven't got around to it yet. So many podcasts, so little time. Thanks for the heads up though!

Politician Tweets About "Stupid Scientology"

Scientology gets to be treated like other religions when it starts to act like one.
As long as it continues to refuse to discuss it's beliefs publicly, it deserves no protection at all.
As long as it actively refuses to allow anyone to see their 'secret documents' without paying vast sums of money first, it deserves no protection at all.
As long as it's deepest foundational beliefs still include Hubbard's Xenu alien origin of life fantasy, it deserves ridicule.
As long as it's practices continue to include things like "Fair Game", it deserves to be fought.
Fair Game, is a declaration that an opponent of scientology is 'fair game' for any and all manner of attacks and attempts to destroy their character as are needed to destroy them and their credibility. Vicky Aznaran, a formerly very high level scientologist described the effects/actions of that policy:
Because of my position and the reports which regularly crossed my desk, I know that during my entire presidency of RTC "fair game" actions against enemies were daily routine. Apart from the legal tactics described below, the "fair game" activities included break-ins, libel, upsetting the companies of the enemy, espionage, harassment, misuse of confidential communications in the folders of community members and so forth.

How is that not like "real" religions? Catholic excommunication? Execution for apostates from Islam? Calling Scientology "stupid" then going to church is ridiculous. Scientology is a frickin case study on how a bullshit idea can become a worldwide cult. The only difference between it and "real" religions is 10 or 15 centuries.

Survey: How Often Do You Use VideoSift? (Blog Entry by lucky760)

I generally make a daily routine stop @ VideoSift to see/vote some videos (which I access in many different ways: tags, titles, members, queue, top 15s, channel, comments, advanced search, playlists, beggars canyon, blogs), add context, check SiftTalk..if only the amount of videos were smaller than the current 2000
http://blog.videosift.com/lucky760/Various-Statistics-for-2008
sifted per month (and more unsifted?) - it would improve our combined (we can't all be here all day..) quality selection and the user management of the videos/comments.
