the truth about ayn rand

LukinStone says...

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but compared with what I consider "literature" I think her books are crap. "Da Vinci Code" is crap for a completely different reason. I thought her stories were poorly constructed, they were merely a delivery system so that she could explain her philosophy. Like I said, if her philosophy was at all redeeming, then maybe she would get points for that.

I would compare it to "The Jungle." In the middle of "The Jungle" the story pretty much stops so the author can describe how horrible the meat-packing industry was, and then it turns into a communist manifesto. So, story-wise, it's also weak, but because its working towards a social change that was needed at the time, I think there was some merit in that.

I don't have a problem with some people being talented or different. Rand's philosophy (Objectivism) doesn't just allow for some people to be different, it says that if you are successful, you deserve more rights. It's circular reasoning. You're successful because you're better than everyone else - How do we know you're better? Because you're successful. And everyone else should just shut up and go to work for the rich people, because they know better.

Dan Brown doesn't write well at all, but I don't think he is trying to make any larger commentary about society.

I have a big problem with Rand's philosophies too. But, what I think is most revealing is how poorly constructed her books are. It's not like she constructs this epic fiction that's a veiled analogy for her ideas. Her characters just spout their nonsense, as a mouthpiece for her.
If she had the exact same ideas but wrote a good story, I could at least see her value as a writer. All of these political figures who cite her as writing their "favorite" book make me wonder what they're comparing it to.

I liked her books, didn't seem like such a stretch that there are some people who are different. Doesn't make them better just makes them who they are. I read tons of books, and if I had to compare her books to any current fiction I would say they're way better than the shit that is "The Di Vinci Code" so they hold up just fine.

Rachel Maddow Show: You Can't Handle Evolution

entr0py says...

Exactly ElJardinero, I don't buy the explination that distributes have failed to pick it up because they're afraid they might receive too much free publicity.

It certainly couldn't be any more controversial then Religulous, which had a US distributor LAST YEAR. Or Dogma, or The Last Temptation of Christ, or The Life of Brian. Even The Da Vinci Code was more heretical then this.

There are books that can and should be made into films. This was not one of them, and neither was The Da-Vinci Code.

I'm still waiting for someone to get off his ass and get going with the Ender's Game movie...

Banned in 43 Countries - Freakshow movie trailer

spoco2 says...

Well I found that trailer revolting, and on reading many reviews of the film, it would seem it's an absolute snorefest up until that end bit where the woman is disfigured in ridiculously graphic detail.

I love a good horror film, but showing horrendous disfigurement like this does absolutely nothing at all for me, and I wonder about the people who enjoy such extreme and prolonged graphic violence towards another.

I just went to the website of the production company and they seem to make cheap, terribly made ripoff film after ripoff film:
SUNDAY SCHOOL MUSICAL - High School Musical
18 YEAR OLD VIRGIN - American Pie et al
AVH: ALIEN VS HUNTER - Alien vs Predator
UNIVERSAL SOLDIERS - Universal Soldier (My GOD, how close can you get?)
ALLAN QUATERMAIN AND THE TEMPLE OF SKULLS - Do I even need to say?
THE DAY THE EARTH STOPPED - The day the earth stood still
DA VINCI TREASURE - The Da Vinci Code
100 MILLION BC - Godzilla
PIRATES OF TREASURE ISLAND - Oh come on!
SNAKES ON A TRAIN - Puuuhlease!
TRANSMORPHERS - MAKE IT STOP NOW!!!!!

Their covers are usually a direct ripoff, they get B/C grade actors (Lorenzo Lamas anyone?)

Truly a studio to avoid. Who the hell actually hires/buys this dross?

Was Jesus just another sun god

Death Note AKA Next Japan film remade poorly in Hollywood

Farhad2000 says...

Death Note is a Japanese manga series originally written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The series primarily centers around a high school student who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it.

Death Note has also been adapted for big screen in the form of two live-action films. The first film (simply called Death Note) premiered in Japan on June 17, 2006 and topped the Japanese box office for two straight weeks, pushing The Da Vinci Code into second place. It is mostly faithful to the manga (with some slight alterations such as the addition of Light's girlfriend Shiori and the circumstances in which Light and L first meet), starting with Light in a university and flashing back a year or so to him receiving the Death Note. It ends with his first meeting with L.

The second movie, Death Note: The Last Name, premiered on November 3, 2006, and instantly topped the Japanese box office, remaining at number one for four straight weeks, and grossed 5.5 billion yen in Japan by the end of the year, making it one of the year's highest grossing Japanese films. It combines elements from the rest of the storyline creating an outcome similar to the manga, but with a few key differences.

The trailer for the second film is here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CHXyEboDVo

A spin-off film, featuring L as the main character, is currently in production to be released in Japan in 2007. The sequel is set in the United States.

Can't vote this though; A musician, who loves piano as well,-a bit too melancholic

Dear McAfee:

I went to goggle.com and searched - just like you - for "da vinci code". Nothing happened.

Well, in the spirit of full disclosure, FF did say that it prevented a popup at goggle.com. That's about it.

To close, my Mac and Firefox have nothing but contempt for you, McAfee.

Hugzzzz!

Bullshit!: The Bible (Sift Talk Post)

theo47 says...

The Bible was "historical fiction" WAY before Dan Brown came up with "The Da Vinci Code".
It's a clearly fictional story REALLY loosely built around historical events. Sorry, Bible-bangers.
