Zero Punctuation: Awards for 2008

Can I be the first to say how incredibly shit 'unskippable' looks? Can I? because really, someone with no real humour doing a voice over on bad cut scenes looks to be one perfect recipe for a really... really... bad use of your time.

Homeworld Ending Cutscene

Final Fantasy X Yuna's Dance

Crappy youtube encoding doesn't do it justice. I nearly wept the first time I saw this cut-scene play out.

As a side note, Lulu is my ideal woman. Could be why I'm dating a half-Japanese girl with a gothic sense of fashion (yum...)

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Trailer

The animation/motion capture/image metrics in this look really great in many of the cut scenes here. I want to kiss the animators.

So many console production houses these days seem happy with wobbly, barely-refined motion capture output that in no way suit the figures they're attached to. I especially love the energetic movements of the Emperor as he attacks

Star Wars Retrospective - Part 6

Aside from the Doom sharware version, Dark Forces was the first FPS I ever played, I spent many a hour playing and replaying it. Jedi Knight was pretty good, the live action cut-scenes while on the cheesy side, were kind of a neat gimmick, outcast was great as well they really refined the force powers and lightsaber work. I never played academy, I think I had the demo, but never gave it a shot.

One of the things that I really liked were all the different environments. Being set in a universe where faster than light travel was an every day occurrence gave a good opportunity to design levels that were more than just creeping through corridors that were all pretty much the same.

Y'know, as a game, I could not be less interested in Metal Gear Solid.
But its quirkiness and willingness to completely eviscerate the fourth
wall gives it a thumbs up in my book.. I was watching my brother play
it and found the cut scenes and bits of its humor to be highly
entertaining.
As for these EA battlefield games. Ehn. Most of
their attempts to inject some soul into this franchise seem very
artificial... I mean, I played 2142 a little with roomates, but
everything just seemed so generic and lifeless.
And they're
also developing a 'wacky cartoon' version of a wargame for the
franchise as well. Wonder where they could have gotten that bit of
inspiration from..

I agree. EA is all about re-hashing and spitting out games with no regard to quality, replayability, and support. They have produced quite a few games that could've been GREAT, but fell terribly short by buggy games filled with exploits and laughable mistakes.

The metal gear series isnt the bestest thing ever produced either, but it is well produced, extremely thought-out, and very entertaining. Hideo Kojima's work has been and will be copied for years to come.

The last, best Final Fantasy for me was number 6. The switch over to 3D just plain killed it. That's when they went cut-scene crazy and the game mechanics started getting overly convoluted. Heck, I was saying it back when VII first came out--if I wanted to watch a movie, I'd watch a movie, not play a game. But Square-Enix fans both in Japan and the U.S. eat this stuff up. I have no idea why. I personally think you kind of have to have masochistic tendencies to begin with to play some of these RPGs, considering the time commitment you have to make if you ever hope to finish them.

Zero Punctuation - Devil May Cry 4

Unfortunately, I love his reviews, and they are funny. But in this case I have to fully disagree. Devil May Cry is some of the most fun I've had in a single player game in awhile. I don't understand his problem with it at all. Much like every hack and slash game out there, yes it can get a bit redundant. But the story is actually good, and so are the cut scenes. DMC is just one of those series you either love or hate.
