How the English are Perceived Around the World

I think most of it's valid. That type of slang (Cockney rhyming slang) is based on rhymes, so they use phrases like "trouble and strife" to mean wife, "apples and pears" means stairs, and "pork pies" means lies. Some of it really was just ???? though, to me at least.

THIS is what Sweeney Todd sounds like.

Johnny Depp did the best he could. I wouldn't fault him. I think it was more of a casting mistake than anything else.

The problem with Depp is that he just wasn't angry enough and he didn't seem to have the ability to sing and act at the same time, which most of the other actors seemed to do quite well.

The other major strain on credibility was that he was way too young, pretty and well dressed to be a man who spent 15 years in prison and had fathered a teenage daughter. Did the prison have a gym and skin spa?

Beyond that, I think Johnny Depp is getting lazy. His Sweeney was nearly identical to his captain Jack, with the same clumsy cockney accent that seemed to become more and less pronounced from scene to scene for no particular reason.

I understand the need to put celebrities in leading rolls to up the box office returns, but couldn't Burton have at least picked an actor with an appropriate physicality. I mean, other than Depp and Burton's wife, the casting was brilliant. It just seems like Depp is becoming Burton's crutch, and IMO, Burton doesn't yet need a crutch.

It's time for more Uwe Boll Madness wooooo!!!!

Watch it back again, but this time put this picture in your mind:

Statham plays a rough, tough london born hard-case. Sent back in time, he must put to use his knowledge of street-survival and thrash it out in this time-travel fantasy epic. Knowing he may never return to his own time and world, he battles his way to fit in with people who have far more hair than he does. Will this cheeky cockney get the wig of betrayal from the hands of gorgoth the almighty? Only time will tell.

I love Statham, but anything he does, he looks like a rough tough cockney born hardcase with some cool ninja moves. And why does he have no hair? Everyone has hair in there except him. Just look at him, he looks like he was plucked out of london and put in some rags and told to fight. I expect him to grab a cigarette and start looking cool at any moment.

i was only familiar with cockney rhyme slang, good to hear you aussie work it too.

I don't remember what state he was from, but an aussie dude I once knew told me a 'kroger' was used interchangeably with 'wanker' or whatever... "look at this f..ing kroger over here". any of ya'll ever heard that?

calamitykate... you might be right that she's doing a bad version of it, whatever it is, but i have heard LOADS of people doing it in various documentaries. of course, google can't search for "hot chicks with the same accent as meg ryan in topgun" so i am a bit stuck for an example
and i am pretty sure she's supposed to be from somewhere else, i mean if that's her west coast accent then she needs to set up an acting school with dick van dyke.

edit: and hillary clinton.

my own accent is totally screwed, it was somewhere between cockney and jamaican (south london) but nobody in lithuania understood me so gradually it went german to make it more precise, and now i have to consciously remember my old accent when i phone friends back home. My dad calls me schumacher.

Big Train Working Class

The Long Good Friday - Trailer

redthing says...

This is a proper London gangster film - it's not by Guy fakeypants Ritchie (about Ritchie from wiki: 'He adopted a cockney accent, despite being the stepson of baronet Sir Michael Leighton of Loton Park and a descendant of Edward I' - Ritchie likes to rough it with the commoners but in reality he's a mockney).
The Long Good Friday is the archetypal British gangster film, it has great actors; Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren and even Pierce Brosnan turns up in it briefly.
It's worth a watch and really really deserves to get at least 10 votes for the front.
