Chrono Trigger... The whole thing

Final Fantasy VII Remake Coming To PS3 (Videogames Talk Post)

davidraine says...

Let's put this rumor to rest once and for all. As soon as the FF7 fanboys and girls saw those 30 seconds of remade FF7 footage as a PS3 tech demo, they were all beside themselves looking for news on a release date, other footage, news exclusives, any sort of scoop to let them know that their beloved game would be re-released in a far more awesome form. However, it's simply not going to happen. At least, it won't happen for PS3.

Squaresoft as a rule didn't re-release any of their games. Once a game was done, it was done. Squaresoft moved onto the next title, and in the rare event that a game actually got a direct sequel (I'm looking at you, Chrono Cross) the sequel was a radical re-imagining of the setting, and it departed completely from the gameplay in the first title. There were a couple of exceptions in that a few Final Fantasy titles were re-released for the Playstation, but on the whole they were not retouched, and if I remember correctly there were various problems with the releases, leading them to be largely panned.

Once Squaresoft merged with Enix to become Square-Enix, things changed a bit, but not in a way that supports the PS3 release hypothesis. The only games to get re-released were much older titles, which were re-released on handheld consoles to target a new market. Most of these are old Nintendo titles rereleased for the GBA, and more recently, the DS and PSP. Most of these were straight up copies of the original game with a little bit added on or minor graphics revisions: These could be done on the cheap and grab a whole bunch of new cash. Only the DS versions were vastly retouched, and I haven't seen the sales numbers on those, so I can't say whether there will be more of them.

There are a couple of exceptions. A couple of games were re-released with added content. Kindom Hearts II: Final Mix and Final Fantasy XII International both got this treatment, but they were rereleased for the same system (PS2) and were Japan-only. The most notable exception was Final Fantasy Tactics, which saw a re-release on the PSP along with a (much needed) new translation and a couple of added jobs. FFT: War of the Lions was I think the most recent of Square-Enix's rereleases, and seems to be the most likely path for an FF7 re-release.

So the most likely chance of seeing an FF7 re-release is on the PSP with no graphical improvement, and maybe a touch of added features. Even that seems unlikely to me, and seeing it on the PS3 is nothing more than a dream, since the cost of porting it and reworking all of the graphics as well as rewriting the code to run on PS3's hardware doesn't justify the expense: Square-Enix would rather make a new game.

Conclusion: Until I see a press release from Square-Enix with a release date for an FF7 re-release, it isn't happening.

[Edit: Fixed an issue with my awful, awful grammar.]

Favorite Games of 2008 (Videogames Talk Post)

JAPR says...

1. Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village (DS) - One of the most intriguing, fun games I've ever played. The music, voices, and puzzles were all maddeningly addictive, everything about the game was well-done, and I frequently found myself playing it until 5 in the morning because I simply couldn't put it down. I would argue that this game is far better than GTAIV any day of the week.

2. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (DS) - Another game that forced me into near-all-nighters with its addictive gameplay and fantastic music. I know the premise of a game where you try to win trials as a defense attorney sounds pretty stupid, but this is actually not just one of the best games of 2008, in my personal opinion, but probably among the top 5 games ever made for a hand-held system.

3. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - It's Smash Bros., what more can I say? Pikachu got made more useful again, and he's always been my favorite character. It's sad to see how much Link has been nerfed from game to game, as he was also pretty good in the first one, but that's just how it goes, I guess.

4. Gears of War 2 (XBox) - I actually played this before playing Gears 1. The unusual controls were a little hard to get the hang of at first, but there were a lot of really cool things about the game, and the storyline was actually kind of interesting, though I feel like a lot of it was chopped out or something.

5. Chrono Trigger (DS) - Yes, i'ts a re-release, but it's my favorite game of all time, so I'm more than willing to overlook it. Plus, I got the Japanese release, and you can play it in either English or Japanese...how badass is that?

I play my DS a lot.

25 Random things about me... (Blog Entry by youdiejoe)

JAPR says...

1. I was raised Mormon, but got fed up with it by junior high and officially dropped it when I moved out for college.

2. I grew up on the West, but not quite the West Coast (hooray Nevada and Idaho).

3. Speaking of Idaho, I don't like potatoes as much as people assume I would.

4. The only non-Republican in my immediate family, but I wouldn't consider myself a Democrat, either. Rather, I decline from choosing a party and prefer to focus on who would be a better candidate overall, as best as I can tell.

5. I used to sing in choir all the way from sixth grade up until the end of Freshman year in college.

6. I actually missed a chance to sing at Carnegie hall with the choir here because I quit it, as well as the opportunity to go to Europe.

7. My sort-of-secret dream is to become a musician, but I'm nowhere close to good enough for that yet.

8. I play guitar and sing, and while my guitaring is starting to get decent, the lack of formal practice with singing since quitting choir has caused my technical abilities in singing to go down.

9. I own a DS and play Pokemon sometimes. Because that game series never really stopped rocking.

10. My favorite video game ever is Chrono Trigger.

11. I am a cat-lover, but am fine with dogs as well.

12. I prefer physical CDs to digital purchases, and currently own over 120 CDs, which I didn't really start purchasing until about three years ago.

13. I only buy CDs without checking them out by downloading first if it's one of my favorite artists and I'm convinced that it's going to be good.

14. I study Japanese, and recently received a rating of "Advanced-low" on the ACTFL Proficiency scale, mostly due to not having devoted any time to studying vocabulary this past semester.

15. My goal is to achieve "Advanced-high" by the end of the year and "Superior" by the time I graduate.

16. My parents see me as a bad influence on my siblings.

17. I drink a lot, and good Belgian ale and German hefeweizen.

18. I don't really smoke, though I have tried it a few times.

19. JAPR are actually my initials.

20. The "A," which is the name I go by, was my Great-Grandfather's middle name, which he went by as well.

21. I have yet to own a car.

22. I spend more money on guitar equipment and CDs than I do on books for classes.

23. I am a habitual procrastinator.

24. I love VideoSift even when it is exactly what I should avoid when I have a deadline for a paper.

25. I still have absolutely no clue what I want to do with my life.

PLAY! A Video Game Symphony - Chrono Trigger/Cross medley

poolcleaner says...

>> ^DavidRaine:
Ah, now I want to hear an orchestral version of the Kingdom of Zeal's theme, and the Undersea Palace -- Both games had some pretty great music.
Where is this from, by the way? It looks like a part of Play!
Edit: Indeed it is from Play! -- I thought this medley sounded familiar.

I went ahead and changed the title to make it more clear who they are. Good call.

i.e. The End of Time [Chrono Trigger "The Brink of Time"]
(this is a really really tight sort of Acid Jazz arrangement album of 10 songs from Chrono Trigger, and I love it muchly)

Well...this is the reason I don't really listen to my music on shuffle. The volume of Japanese rock and indie rock on there makes it so that the odds of busting out any of the other Western music I love is a little low, but the awesomeness of it starting with my favorite band on random was pretty neat. I was pleasantly surprised that The Jam managed to pop up, since due to space issues I currently only have that one album in here right now.

Awesome fun!
