Colbert Vs. Obama in a game of "wastepaper basketball"

Cenk Uygur (TYT) on MSNBC - Mosque near Ground Zero

Jinx says...

>> ^Pprt:

I think the major distinction here is that mosques are known to NR hotbeds of Islamic fundamentalism all over the western world, from the Czech Republic to Australia.
Churches (minus one in particular I'm sure someone would point out were it not for these parentheses), as far as I am aware, have never been accused of recruiting paramilitary forces or plotting murder.
There's a reason noone would've objected to a Bhuddist temple... it's not prejudice, it's having your head out of the sand.

Really? You think they all go to prayers, have idle chit chat about how they hate freedom and run a bomb making production line?

Its really simple, the vast majority of muslims are basically peaceful. Hell, I dislike their religion, I don't agree with a lot of their beliefs but the truth is that mosques aren't teror training camps. Sometimes you get one where one bad egg preaches hate, we had that here in the UK a while back, but banning Mosques is not the correct response. By reacting this way to Islam you run the risk of alienating moderate muslims. This is the mistake America makes over and over. You cannot fight an idea or belief. You can't go to war with it, you sure as hell can't restrict or silence it because all you do is fuel the fire of the extremists. You cherish freedom? THEN FUCKING SHOW IT.

Being a Muslim is not a crime but if you treat like such then you'll end up with a lot of criminals.

Good luck with the sift.

No sarcasm in my post that I can see. I'll take your "go fuck yourself" under advisement - might be just what I need.

I don't think I called you a petulant child. Though I may have - it sounds like something I would say. I'm sorry you deleted your original missive - I always like a good flame. On review, the petulant child thing must be about me saying that always looking for instances of bias and favouritism is something that my kids do. It is indeed something they do - and something that does seem to happen here a fair bit. As a parent and as an admin of this site - I try really, really hard to be fair and unbiased.
I don't dislike you at all - I don't think I've been hostile - though I may have - I apoologize, if so. Feel free to tell me to go fuck myself - I love that phrase. It won't get you banned, that's for sure.
>> ^Throbbin:
I had this whole long diatribe written here, giving you a piece of my mind. But, before I hit submit, I gave it a second thoguht and erased it all.
Long story short, I was frustrated with something I didn't like. You called me a petulant child. I was about to tell you to go fuck yourself, but I doubt that would do anybody any good.
I've always liked you more than you liked me. I think I would really enjoy talking with you about your experiences in Alaska. Maybe I was a little brash in how I went about things. Maybe you just can't stand me. Maybe a bit of both.
Either way, I'd still like to chit chat sometime IRL. Take it easy.

Bill O'Reilly - Glenn Beck Reacts to Jon Stewart Interview

JiggaJonson says...

I really wanted to come up with some kind of comprehensive analysis of this.
If not that, I wanted to pluck out one aspect of it and refute it.

But the problem with listening to these two chit-chat is that I quickly became overwhelmed with their bullshit. I think my problem was trying to draft something mid video but I kept catching myself stopping and saying "HEY that's not true!"

So my new direction with my comment is this: The truth leaves you no outs. Lies on the other hand always leave you something to fall back on, you can always tell another lie. It's really interesting watching these to dance through a conversation together.

I can point out numerous contradictions in the 6 minutes I just watched (and I will if asked) but to be honest I really dont want to. The only reason I even bother to watch this crap anymore is because I feel like I have a social obligation to understand opposing views on politics. The only trouble is I really dont understand what the fuck these guys are talking about because the facts have gone through some kind of bullshit filter before they were put back on the air.

And then I see it, the whirlwind of facts and bullshit intermingle so frequently it's exhausting even trying to really understand what these idiots are blabering about even within the context of what i consider to be objective facts (i get my news from a variety of sources including NPR, cspan, the associated press, cnn, and google news to name a few) -- But now I'm thinking about the man who watches nothing but Fox news. And I remember Fox has the highest ratings of them all.

We're fucked.

I found the dialog riveting, well performed and necessary for establishing the characters. The first scene in the farm house which you mentioned was especially good. It introduces you to the character of the Jew Hunter - who is ominous but fascinating.

In reply to this comment by JiggaJonson:
Meh, one of my favorite films of all time is "Before Sunset" where there is literally nothing but dialogue. If I wanted to see that amount of chit chat though I would have preferred to get some philosophical perspective out of it. No one wants to watch a movie where the characters are all simply talking about doing something.

Now there are some exceptions, see: Reservoir Dogs and Suicide Kings, but films tied so closely to that kind of writing need to involve the audience (both I mentioned bring the audience in by presenting a sort of mystery or puzzle that needs to be solved). In the case of Inglorious Basterds I felt like I already knew what was going to happen. This probably came from listening to interviews that Tarantino did where he described 'burning down the theater with film,' and 'changing the course of history.' Tense moments were tense but it was mostly a waiting game for me.

In reply to this comment by dag:
Also, for people who didn't like the copious amounts of dialog - I suggest you take a break from first person shooters to help you enjoy the true pleasures of a good movie. It's not about explosions and CGI.

those who think anonymity changes who they are don't know themselves. using anonymity as an "excuse" for your actions is simply a way to feel better about being a douchebag online.

being anonymous frees you from social or legal consequences, which is an environment where peoples true character shines through. this is why an individual might not commit murder, but an individual in a lynch mob will. they were always a murderer, but it took an environment free of consequence (and full of anonymity) to reveal it.

In reply to this comment by spoco2:
Indeed, as MINK says, anonymity doesn't really reveal who you are... Who ARE you anyway? Are you the person who people know in 'real life', are you the one who is known by your work/classmates, or the one known by your family? Or the one know only to your lover?

The difference with what I say online in places like this is that I will say things about my life I wouldn't necessarily say to all people I interact with in public as it'd be a little bit too much info... but online you can do so as it doesn't affect idle chit chat and personal meetings.

Having said that, online I'm not anonymous at all, in that I use the same handle EVERYWHERE... the spoco2 you'll find pretty much dang near anywhere online will be me. Plus I have posted to files hosted on my own server, which without much snooping around will show more about me... So I try not to be a prick from that point of view as I know that it's a known name. Also, there are people in real life who always call me Spoco, so they'd probably be able to read an awful lot of ramblings by me based on that too.

So, in the world of anonymity I don't go for full, and so I guess that might influence what I say?

I think the main thing with the anonymity really works the other way for me. I can give some fairly terse responses to comments on the sift because ALL I know about most people are their comments, so you have this narrow view of someone and don't know all that other information that helps shape the place they make their comments from. As such you attack the comments more directly I think, and with less regard to perhaps offending some other thing about the person who said them, because you don't know anything else.

If that makes sense?

really man, I can't stand the comment voting either, because if I really like or despise what someone had to say, I pm them, perhaps start another conversation, oh, and few folks I chit-chat with regularly, kinna just like in the real world.....

The only reason I upvote a comment, is because i am a robot like the rest of ya....gonna start ignoring those little arrows, they really do serve no purpose, save a little ego-stroking, or passive-aggressive poking.

Thanks for the clear-light there MINK....I knew I had a reason for the disgust I feel every time I up or down vote a comment.....
