America really flew the U-2 spy plane off aircraft carriers

newtboy says...

Unconvinced.
Why would they try to land on an aircraft carrier, breaking the plane every single time by scraping the wingtips off on the deck? In air refueling means it would never be required, and a total lack of stealth makes it just stupid, landing strip width makes it incredibly difficult to land a plane over 3 times the wingspan of an F16, especially one as in precise and hard to fly as a u2….and impossible to store off the deck, making the carrier useless until the U2 was removed.

On land they had chase cars that drove under the wings at landing, installing the wheels and/or keeping the tips off the ground.

Not trusting this internet source…beware unknown sources.
There’s a reason there wasn’t one shot of a successful landing, the best they had was a 3 point landing with the wing as point 3. At best this was a failed test, not a functional program.

Confederate Flag Parade in Georgia. Wait for it....

ChaosEngine jokingly says...

"Rape" van?!? Jesus, newt, that's a bit much... and yeah, it was cooler. They turned the damn thing into a freaking tank half the time. Also, no confederate flag painted on it and not named for a general on team slavery, therefore cooler.

I will admit that the respective token women on the A-Team weren't a patch on Daisy.

Finally, what's with this nonsense about the A-Team being bad shots? Do you have any idea how difficult it is to fire an assault rifle at someone on full auto and not accidentally hit them? Look at this picture. Any idiot can hit the black section, but it takes almost superhuman marksmanship to unload a full clip into the white section!

The A-Team are like Batman. They could easily roll in and murder the hell out of everyone, but they choose the hard path. Want more proof?

Here's Murdoch (the least combat capable of the team) hitting a tire on moving target from a chasing car.... with a handgun and in one shot! And he does it in such a way that van does an epic roll and everyone inside is still ok. That's not just good, that's god like.

And while we're recapping 80s shows, Knight Rider was also better than the Dukes. </stirring>

Also, I love that this has turned into a discussion on the A-team vs Hazzard. It's exactly as much respect as those confederate flag waving douchebags in the video deserve.

Oh, you had me until your arguments WHY A-team was better.

Lets see...black 'rape' van better than a high flying, 'street legal' racing Charger? I respectfully disagree.
Better theme song, not to my ears, but both are good.
Peppard, better than Uncle Jesse, depends on the episode to me. Mr. T, OK, he's better than any single Duke character...but Murdock wasn't 1/4 the comedy relief of Roscoe P Coltrane, Enos, and Flash....and the Team had nothing to answer Daisy!
"I love it when a plan come's together", great line (I still say it all the time), but then again, so was "Luke, how come you didn't stop for me?" asked by Bo after diving in the window of the General at about 30 mph!

Then you have the military supermen that can't hit a person-ever VS the country boys that can hit moving targets from moving targets with arrows wrapped with dynamite and moonshine Molotov's! COME ON!

But all that said, 9/10 episodes of Hazard were basically the same story, Boss Hog is stealing something and the boys need to escape the crooked law to stop him. At least A-Team had more story variation, more explosions, and just as many car flips/jumps. Kind of an apple/orange thing to me. My 12 year old self was glad they were not on at the same time, no DVR back then.

I wasn't in Spain with them, so I don't know any more than you

I would assume the chase car with the camera had a radio link to a spotter at the bottom, but they don't actually say so. I read it more as a warning to always take care rather than saying not to use radios.

If you put the question to the OP perropro on yt he may reply, he's answered other questions.

Thank you for the link. To be clear, were these guys using walkie talkies and they failed? That's not obvious from the video. It looks a lot like they weren't and are trying to cover themselves by saying 'walkie talkies can fail so there's no point using them'. I'm being a bit grumpy about this and could well be wrong, it's just the way the video says 'walkie talkies can fail' not 'our walkie talkies failed'.

Buy good walkie talkies not cheap shitty ones and test them where you're going to use them. I've used them a lot at sea and not had any issues with the good ones. No technology is perfect, but there are still ways they could have mitigated the danger.

Another option would be to use a phone and a bluetooth earpiece. Open conversation throughout the run with the guy at the bottom of the hill. If the signal cuts out you slow down. It's really not rocket science. There really are plenty of ways they could have tried to avoid this.

But at the end of the day you're right, an open road is always a risk regardless.

The Kashmir entrance of the plane gave me goosebumps.
Also, I didn't think pilots could have glasses or contacts? Or is it just that they can't be colorblind?
Anyway, if we had this technology for spyplanes in the 50's, it makes you wonder what technology we don't know about now.

It's all satellite now.

I thought the guy in the chase car had to reach out his window to steady the wing so it could taxi?

Man attacks police car by running at it with a knife

xxovercastxx says...

It was uncalled for. The guy was running around with a knife; he wasn't any threat to the officers while in their cars. As long as he was chasing cars, he wasn't a threat to anyone else either.

Move the cars to opposite ends of the lot. The officer of whichever car he doesn't pursue can safely get out and draw a gun at that point. Have a TASER or other LLW ready as well. If he doesn't comply, you do what you have to.

If he had a gun then I'd be all for hitting him... probably repeatedly.

@rychan - Yes, I do think it's reasonable to expect an officer to use a TASER in this case. Is it risky? Hell yes, but this idea that police officers should never have to go into a risky situation is bullshit. It's their fucking job to go into risky situations and resolve them to protect the rest of us.
