Hiromi Uehara -- Place to be

chingalera says...

ME and my roommate were discussing the lack of 'soul' in some musicians, and were using examples like Steve Vai vs. Frank Zappa and say, Yngwie Malmsteen vs. Buckethead, etc (for guitarists) and he brought up the whole Japanese fascination with jazz vs. a lot of her practitioner's technical skills relative to their lack of 'soul' and I was trying to think of an example of a Japanese musician WITH some soul, and could not remember this woman's name as I used her as an exception to the 'soulless', technical performer-

Thanks again Kulpims (pretty sure you first turned me on to this artist here), this woman has the whole soul + technical prowess package²

Yeah, I also feel like I'm watching a tech demo rather than an art performance.

It's like watching Buckethead play guitar... it's incredible but it's not enjoyable.

I also wonder why they called it a drum solo when he's got a full band backing him.

I feel weird for being impressed by an accordion player

I saw him open for Buckethead about a month ago. Really interesting live, but I've found the studio recordings don't hold up nearly as well. In retrospect it's a little too Primus, but upvote anyway.

so....bucketheads a cool idea....like bush...or Zappa,(you'd have to be able to spell) or Fripp, or, anyone with a guitar,....AND, the bone.(sing along)-up a half step, each new bone:

♪ ♫The creative bone connected to the brain-bone,♪ ♫the brain-bone connected to the, love-music-but-can't-play-it-bone, ♪ ♫that bone connected to the, try it bone,♪ ♫ the other bone,....etc- ♪ ♫...you too, can play like a bucket-bone!

MINK, jonny, nazdorvia, deathcow, all hit it-to musicians, this guy lacks the quality that developing a sound of one's own produces, but plays the manic, wreckless noodling card off, quite well....like everyone fawning over a guy like buckethead, or Stanley Jordan who can make dreamy sounds, and has an initial presence appeal, but the technical grace can only carry you so far.

Cobain? His tortured, fast-burning flame of soul, wash a white-washed cry for help, and for me, that over-shadows any potential for greatness of merit....just look at the ilk that treat Kurt like a god-buncha manic-depression candidates, coffee addicted and screaming for help in their own way, 20-somethings, with a fried internal navigation system....

another one really gets me pissed-Dave Matthews and his College Cult Crooning, ....that man's shit, runs together like a Jackson Pollock mural-and the kids who worship him wouldn't know good music if it collided with their flavor-of-the-week, world views.....

Doc Watson, Django Reinhardt, Merle Travis-
Jeff Beck, Zappa, Ronnie Montrose, yes, the Winter Bros., hell....Angus Young....whaddya know, most of these guys are either still alive, or lived long lives with smiles on their faces...not needles in their arms, or booze in their livvers.....
