Stephen Fry - Bullet Question

handmethekeysyou says...

>> ^Skeeve:
I can't show the work, but it's relatively easy to explain.
The forward velocity of an object does not affect the gravitational forces pulling on it. Therefore, two identical items dropped (or propelled) from the same height will hit the ground at the same time (if the experiment is in a vacuum and isn't effected by wind or lift or something of that sort).
What makes this counter-intuitive is probably partly the fact that we so rarely see, or hear of, a fired bullet hitting the ground before it hits some other object (ie. the target).

This is precisely correct. The experiment assumes a vacuum, wherein there are no effects of air resistance. In a vacuum, all objects fall at the same speed regardless of mass, surface area, or, as is pertinent in this case, velocity perpendicular to the gravitational force. This is similar to why it is counter-intuitive that a bowling ball and a feather fall at the same speed: the experiment assumes a vacuum. In our experience, we consider a feather to be "light", falling slowly to the ground. But if there is no air resistance, the feather simply falls.

Skeeve's explanation of why this seems counter-intutive is also correct. The horizontal velocity of a bullet is so much greater than the vertical force of gravity that we don't perceive it as being affected by gravity at all, let alone the same as a bullet that is dropped, where the only force acting upon it is gravity.

More Republican Hypocrisy on "Sanctity of Marriage"

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

You can't have your cake and eat it too. If a persons fidelity is unrelated to their job performance, then this guys screwing around should not be news.

The reason it is 'news' is that shadenfrued is the mother's milk of modern neolibs. Most news agencies are slopping over with increasingly unprofessional neolibs who have little regard any longer about how blatantly they display their bias. Therefore, when a Republican or conservative slips up in the realm of traditional values it becomes 'news' because they can't stop themselves from pointing out the hypocrisy. They are less interested focusing on the constant hypocrisy of liberals - but there it is.

Part of this comes from mis-placed agression over Bill Clinton. The neolibs never have quite gotten over Clinton getting impreached for lying under oath. They think it was all about the sex. So their mantra is and was "it didn't effect his job performance..." because to them it was all about sex crazed neocons and not about lying under oath. So when a Republican screws up about sex they are all over it like black on a bowling ball. To them it is a key aspect of thier political identity to chew out Repubs/Conservs over such things because it mentally (but inaccurately) justifies their defense of Bill Clinton.

I once accidentally revealed the cure for cancer in an unknown language, when I dropped a bowling ball on my foot. It sure was unfortunate that no one around me understood that language and they all interpreted it as "Aargh, fuck it all to hell".

Low Gravity - Mythbusters Bust Moon Landing Conspiracies

Again, you're equating Earth's gravitation and atmosphere with the moon's. As long as you continue thinking of standing on the moon like standing on Earth, I think it'll be easy to keep seeing inconsistencies.
Instead of a penny in flour, consider a bowling ball in snow.
>> The evidence is still there.
At the end of this episode of Mythbusters they used a giant laser to shoot a beam at the moon where there are, in fact, still mirrors sitting there. And they did their sole job, bouncing the laser beam right back, proving the mirrors are there, so we actually don't have to go back to find the proof.

Cool, I'll need to watch it then.

Like I said, and it seems some people (lucky760 excluded) didn't read that before they decided to start blasting me. I'm not saying we faked anything. I just like to play Devil's advocate sometimes.

I do look forward to the upcoming Mars and lunar missions. I just wish they didn't wait what, 40+ years to start up again? That's one of the biggest mistakes we have made in my opinion.

At the end of this episode of Mythbusters they used a giant laser to shoot a beam at the moon where there are, in fact, still mirrors (called retroreflectors) sitting there. And they did their sole job, bouncing the laser beam right back, proving the mirrors are there, so we actually don't have to go back to find the proof.
