The 'Life of Brian' Debate (1979)

ReverendTed says...

>> ^spoco2:
The Life of Brian is such a wonderful movie, so full of fantastic humour, so NOT in any way attacking any faith at all, that it did such a great thing of showing all these humourless, dour individuals how wrong they were.

Not attacking faith? Brian's throng of followers are basically a direct attack on the fallacy of blind faith. The stoning of the blasphemer is a direct attack on the dangers of overzealous faith.
The movie is as much a send-up of religion as "Every Sperm is Sacred".

Don't let my username fool you, though, I went out and bought Life of Brian on DVD to replace my VHS copy when I tossed out my VCR, and I've got the Monty Python box set, etc, etc.
Grand piece of film. I'm particularly fond of the non-sequitur segment with the aliens and the "Romans go home" bit.

The 'Life of Brian' Debate (1979)

We have a lot to thank Python for. Not just great humour, but things like this which really challenged the scared and staid church and puritans.

The Life of Brian is such a wonderful movie, so full of fantastic humour, so NOT in any way attacking any faith at all, that it did such a great thing of showing all these humourless, dour individuals how wrong they were. That is to say, because there was no ill intent in it, in the long run and in the face of mass agreement from the populous as to it being a fine piece of work, those who saw it as any way blasphemous were demonstrated to just be scared individuals who lash out at anything they see that could possibly be saying anything against their precious little messiah.

Steven Hawkings Universe - Religion vs Science

Aniatario says...

According to legend, upon Galileo's trial when he was forced to renounce the blasphemous theory that the Earth was not stationary and not the center of the universe. Galileo muttered "E pur si muove" meaning, "And yet it moves" before leaving the courtoom. Afterwards the man spent the remainder of his life under house arrest.

Christians against Easter

rougy says...

On the one hand, I don't really care. I think that everybody should pursue and practice their religious beliefs as they see fit.

What kind of bothers me is that there is a humanistic connection to these celebrations that need not be disparaged.

It commemorates the rebirth of the seasons and the circle of life, as far as I can see, and there's nothing shameful about that.

It's no more shameful or blasphemous than celebrating your child's birthday.

Jack Chick, animated: "Somebody Goofed," by Syd & Rodney

Trancecoach says...

^While all that you say may be true (albeit a bit embellished) about this (granted) lunatic, this 8 minute film debuted at the DFILM Digital Film Festival in San Francisco on November 7, 1997 to which it received some wild responses. DFILM founder Bart Cheever tells Boing Boing TV reported, "People really loved it or really, really hated it. Religious people called it blasphemous and threatened to organize boycotts of our shows. Anti-religious people called it religious propaganda and wrote angry letters to theater owners where we screened the festival."

Anything that provokes THAT level of reaction deserves some attention! *requeue

MUST SEE Richard Dawkins Interview

moonsammy says...

>> ^quantumushroom:
Humans are creatures of imagination and emotion, and listening to Dawkins talk about DNA, while interesting, will never replace religious storytelling.

Maybe not Dawkins / DNA specifically, but I find science far more interesting than any religious story. I've always been awestruck when considering the scale and complexity of the universe, the unimaginably slow movements of galaxies colliding, the strangeness of things close to absolute zero, etc etc etc. Religion is either largely or entirely composed of made up stories about people doing stuff.
"Hey, so god was going to flood the planet to kill everyone (because he loves us), but he didn't want all the animals to die so he had some guy build a giant boat to temporarily store 2 of each of them."
vs
The Hubble deep field.

No contest.

On the other hand, if there is a creator who will someday judge us and eternally reward or punish us, may it have mercy on my foolish blasphemous self. Also, some irrefutable evidence for your existence would be nice pleasedon'tsmiteme.

So you're making your own religion up..? Since when was religion a pick and choose kind of thing?

Do you believe everything that has ever been written is to be taken literally? Have you not heard of simile, analogy, metaphor, etc.? To assume that every author of the Bible was writing literally seems foolish.
So no, I am not "making my own religion up." When science indicates that the world wasn't created in 168 hours, you have two options: ignore science and yell "la la la la la I can't hear you", or consider that not every single written word in the Bible is to be taken literally, which is a more than reasonable consideration. To do so isn't blasphemous or "picking and choosing"; it is to recognize the truth of things.

For the record, i never said what you accused me of saying. I was putting up conjecture based on what i thought to be true, to be answered by someone more informed than myself, and if i gave any other impression then i apologise.

I thought that was pretty clear from the qualification at the end - it IS just a matter of opinion, because since my first post on this video, i have asked 2 christians and been told that yes, it is a matter of opinion, and some would say that changing a detail of christianity would no longer be christianity, you don't get to pick and choose. Some wouldn't - you clearly included - and i make no allusions as to who is right or wrong, or whether there IS a right or wrong. But like it or not, some people do think that.

Anyway, back on topic, i'll answer your question;
No, i don't believe everything that has ever been written is to be taken literally. But i also do not believe in anything i have no proof of, and that makes me a different person to you and therefore i can't make any judgements on what you would/wouldn't believe, and neither should you.

NetRunner says...

It's anti-semitism. Read the final notation by pausing at 2:50.

The Jews are behind NWO, and are trying to implement the 7 Noahide Laws?

For reference, those are:

1. Prohibition of Idolatry: You shall not have any idols before God.
2. Prohibition of Murder: You shall not murder. (Genesis 9:6)
3. Prohibition of Theft: You shall not steal.
4. Prohibition of Sexual Promiscuity: You shall not commit adultery.
5. Prohibition of Blasphemy: You shall not blaspheme God's name.
6. Dietary Law: Do not eat flesh taken from an animal while it is still alive. (Genesis 9:4)
7. Requirement to have just Laws: You shall set up an effective judiciary to enforce the preceding six laws fairly.

You mean I can't eat the flesh of a living animal? That fucks up my whole weekend.

I suppose a whackjob could believe that it also means decapitation for worshiping Jesus, Allah, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but that's gonna be a tall order.

Sounds like something the fuhrer would've done -- or was that just giving a speech in an outdoors stadium? I forget.

Sarah Palin says Pipeline is "God's will, so pray for that"

12944 says...

As a Christian I find the words of this woman offensive. Beware of politician who use the name God to gain an advantage. Did she ever learned the 10 commandments?

"You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not acquit anyone who misuses his name."

This commandment prohibits not just swearing but also the misappropriation of religious language in order to commit a crime, participating in occult practices, and blaspheming against places or people that are holy to God.
