I know it's just a game, but past the neatness of the video, I can't get over the circumstances being depicted.. I imagine the US army would KNOW they would have anti-air fortifications on Gov. Island to be captured and used against them and might hesitate to send waves of vulnerable helicopters to it without first trying to take them out.

Very cool about the game design! I always used to think of Sierra as just a publisher, for some reason..

I got to learn Game Design with a guy who worked at the company that because Sierra.

He is a good man.

Thats a hell of an incursion. pavelows and blackhawks.

Did You Know America is also Bombing Somalia?

yea, not exactly news to anyone who lives outside the US and actually takes an interests in current affairs.

I mean didn't anybody watch blackhawk down? It wasn't completely fictional

i mean, sure, the cast is great, effects look worthy, etc.
but the other one had those, and Ang Lee, and i still didn't like it.

but, i had remembered Eric Bana, from Blackhawk Down, thought he was a good choice. Jennifer Connelly is a great actress, and i've had a crush on her since Career Opportunities, with my homeboy Frank Whaley. and all other of Ang Lee's work, i could scarcely recommend more highly. y'know?

though i obviously won't hold the odd misfiring of its predecessor, against this new film.

everyone hits a grounder now and again.

Twelve soldiers' remains laid to rest together, in one grave

MarineGunrock says...

Fuck. I mean... just fuck.
When I was in Iraq, I was a cannoneer, and our howitzer was directly in front of the heli-pad.
We hated helicopters with a passion. They would fly in, blow sand everywhere, be so loud you couldn't hear the guy next to you, and blow down everything you had up. We would curse the whole time they were there. But some helicopters we could only stand still and silent for.
Day after day, I would see a HMMWV ambulance would drive up to the pad and wait for a BlackHawk helicopter with a big red "+" painted on it. They would then offload one or a few Marines to be taken to a hospital, likely to be sent home for good. I always felt sad, but in a way, I was happy that they would be going home.
Then there were the days that HMMWV ambulance would drive up and would have twice the usual Marines standing there than normal, and a CH-46 (Chinook) would fly down.
We all knew that could only mean one thing.
From the HMMWV they would pull out one or more stretchers, covered in American flag, and would load it onto the Ch-46, trying to keep the rotor wash from blowing the flag away revealing the body bag beneath.
I don't think that there was anything harder than watching that.
Almost three years later and I still get watery-eyed at news reports like this. Thanks for the good sift, Calvados.

Apache and UH-60 Precision Target Fire using IR

BoneyD says...

I've seen this video floating around the internets and I tend to think it's been mis-labeled. Though it's difficult to be sure, I believe the attacking craft are likely to be AH-6 (or MH-6) Little Birds or something similar. They use two forward firing miniguns and/or rockets, as opposed to a Spectre or Blackhawk which are side mounted. The latter would be firing as they orbit the target, whereas we see the rounds in the video as though from a stationary (or directly approaching) vehicle. I've also heard it argued that they were AH-64 Apaches doing the strafe, but i'm fairly certain they only use the slower firing 30mm cannon.

Still, an impressive video! It's interesting how the ground fire from the .50cal chimes in when the chopper attack has finished. I would guess to keep any survivors heads down, lest they attack the vulnerable passing aircraft?

Helicopter Gunship - Holy crap! That's some heavy firepower!

Helicopter Rescue on Mt. Hood Oregon. Gone bad.

therealblankman says...

At this very moment, the largest high-altitude rescue attempt in American History is going on near this same location on Mt. Hood. It involves several Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters and dozens of rescue climbers and volunteers, all searching for 3 climbers who became trapped during the severe storms of this past week. The video above dates from 4 years ago.

Godspeed, and come home safe.

AH-64 Apache close fly by

Farhad2000 says...

I think thats how they took out those Blackhawks in Mogadishu, Somalia. Though am not suprised to see it fly so low, at the start of the 2nd Gulf War the largest helicopter attack force moved into Iraq from bases in Kuwait. They moved in pack formation hugging the ground about as low as seen here avoiding SA2s, SAMs and the like.

However flying so low does have it's dangerous, an Apache helicopter was taken down in Iraq early in the war, I don't know if you guys remember that famous photo of a Iraqi farmer next to it in a low level lake surrounded by green reeds.
