New Rule: First Lady Barack Obama | Real Time (HBO)

Cyclist Weaving Between Looters Philly's Shopping District

newtboy says...

I had a realization....at some point, the Trump chumps are going to claim letting the pandemic hit us worse than anywhere else was intentional and goading police into intolerable racist violence daily was intentional...Both super smart ideas by a genius. They're both campaign promises being kept, because with America a dumpster fire, Mexico is far more likely to build that wall and pay for it.
Remember when a $70 billion dollar useless and ecologically apocalyptic "wall" that he insisted America wouldn't pay for but did was an unthinkable waste of taxpayer money? Too bad we won't have an accounting of his last year in office on election day, I bet he's added at least $7-8 trillion to the debt this year so far, and we're only 1/2 way through the year. Of course, he'll lie and claim it only went up $1.5 trillion (keeping most off the books like the Iraq war under Bush) and only that much because of the depression he caused, the one he blames on Barak like he's still the active president....oh, how we all wish that were true.

Melania Trump Plagiarizes Michelle Obama

newtboy says...

Taken individually, perhaps there could be just similar sounding soundbites...but taken as a whole, it's a word for word repetition with only a few minor changes (but wouldn't it have been great if she has said "Barak and I were raised with many of the same values"). They've now admitted that 1) she didn't write her speech as she repeatedly claimed and 2) many parts were plagiarized (not that they used that word...they said "borrowed from other speeches that fit her narrative").
And, as you alluded to, FAR less than 1 in 1 TRILLION odds that she didn't plagiarize is also pretty convincing.

To be honest, these could have been any two speeches coming out of any two politicians' faces in the last 30 years. Not sure I see it. There's not a single distinctive turn of phrase or sentiment in that section of Michelle's speech that could only have been taken from her...

ETA: but okay, I guess I gotta defer to the statistical analysis. https://www.washingtonian.com/2016/07/19/we-ran-melania-trumps-speech-through-a-plagiarism-checker/

11-Year-Old Girl Speaks Out About Forced Marriage

radx says...

Has anyone checked the source of the translation, MEMRI?

Never heard of 'em, but Wiki has some basic info that makes it appear to me like a bloody propaganda outfit. Look at the names listed: Michael Hayden (NSA/CIA), Paul Bremmer and John Bolten (Bush's warmongers), Ehud Barak (fmr. Israeli Minister of Defence) and running the show is Yigal Carmon, who is listed as an Israeli spook.

Call me cynical, but I smell a touch of manipulative propaganda. Not saying the story is false, just that it might have been picked, pushed and hyped for a political purpose other than the suffering of Yemeni girls/women.

How Turkish protesters deal with teargas

JustSaying says...

Sure, there is no need to speak in terms of civil war. Unless you're one of these guntoting, armed to the teeth nutjobs who think it would be a good idea. You know, the kind of people who buy an *assault rifle* for self defense.
However, no matter how well trained your riot police is, their less than lethal tactics are only useful up to a certain amount of people, they can become rather useless if the crowds get too big to contain or simply too violent themselves. That's when it gets interesting, that is when protest can turn into riots.
When the cops face huge, somewhat peacful crowds, they might enter Tiananmen Square. At what point would american cops or military personnel start thinking that it's unwise or inhuman to start firing into the crowd? Before the first shot? After the second magazine? On day three?
It's not the 1960s anymore but the sixties are not forgotten. Not by those who faced police officers willing to fire into the crowd. You know, black people. The kind of people whose parents and grandparents are still alive to tell them about their fight against oppression. This is still alive in the american concious, it shaped your country and it won't go away soon. Just ask Barak about his birth certificate.
Civil unrest is part of your recent history, the seed is there. Even under a President Stalin all you'd need go from isolated, contained riots to complete and irreversible shitstorm is a Martyr, a Neda Agha Soltan or a Treyvon Martin. No matter what ethnicity (although african american would be nice), that would present a tipping point.
Your police can bring out the tanks on Times Square if they want but if half of NY shows up, these guys inside the tanks might want to get out ASAP.
The Erich Honecker regime of the German Democratic Republic was basically brought down by somewhat peaceful demonstrations of people shouting "I'm mad as hell and I won't take it anymore" in east german accents.
The StaSi, the Ministry of State Security, who was efficient enough to make *every* citizen a potential informant in the eyes of their opposition, ran from the protesters like little girls. They used to imprison and torture people who spoke up.
The east german border used to be the most secure in the entire world. It was protected by minefields and guards who shot and killed anyone who tried to cross it. Before David Hasselhoff even had a chance to put on his illuminated leather jacket the government caved and just fucking opened it. People just strolled through Checkpoint Charlie and bought Bananas as if it was Christmas.
This was the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union. You know, the guys who lost over 20 Million people in WW2 and still kicked the Nazis in the nuts.
Nobody brought a gun. All the east germans had was shitty cars and lots of anger. They tore down not just a dictatorship, they tore down the iron curtain.
And they didn't even have a Nelson Mandela. Or Lech Walesa.
I still stand by my point: strength in numbers, not caliber.

aaronfr said:

Sorry, but Ching is right. There is no need to talk about this in terms of civil war, especially since that isn't even close to what this was showing.

A crowd, in particular because of its size, has its own weaknesses. It is naive to assume that large numbers mean that the police can not control or influence a protest. In fact, that is exactly what riot police train for: leveraging their small numbers and sophisticated weaponry against unprepared and untrained masses in order to achieve their objective. A successful protest and/or revolutionary group must know how to counteract the intimidation and violence of security services and their weaponry.

This is not 1920s India or 1960s USA. Pure nonviolent resistance does not spark moral outrage or wider, sustained support among the public nor does it create shame within the police and army that attack these movements. This is the 21st century, the neoliberal project is much more entrenched and will fight harder to hold on to that power. As I've learned from experience, it is ineffective and irresponsible to participate in peaceful protests and movements without considering the reaction of the state and preparing for it through training and equipment.

Perhaps you've gone out on a march once or sat in a park hearing some people talking about big ideas, but until you spend days, weeks and months actively resisting the powers that be, you don't really understand what happens in the streets.

Um... well, lets see... Barak Obama is the President of the United States, arguably the most powerful nation in the world. So his children would make excellent targets for anyone who considers the USA a threat. That would be a heck of a lot of people.

Really harlequinn, you need this stuff spelled out for you? I didn't notice any sarcasm tag...

Victoria Jackson Argues With A Gay Rights Activist

This was actually not Victoria's worst argument. She actually presented somewhat coherent points in a reasoned fashion. I was actually more bothered back during Occupy when she just wouldn't shut up about how much she hated the "Communist foreigner," Barak Obama.

Cute, except that Obama hasn't actually used this excuse once already.

President Obama Slow Jams the News

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

7 years ago, Bush was in the White House, and Republicans had the majority in the Senate and the House.

True, but not relevant to the Student loan thing. Sigh. I must - once again - step in and provide the actual facts for this issue.

The year is 2007. The Democrats control both the House of Representatives, and the Senate. This Democrat congress passed a law which implemented a phased decrease in student loan rates. Every year the percentage dropped from its ORIGINAL rate of 6.8%. So in reality, the 3.4% current rate has not even been "the rate" for a year. The law that the Democrat congress passed was written so that the rates would return to normal in 2012. For the record, Barak Obama was a Senator at the time of the vote, but did not attend the session to actually cast his vote because he was campaigning. The law as it is written was designed and passed by Democrats. Not the GOP. Also for the record, the CURRENT congress (GOP) passed a resolution to keep the 3.4% rate but the Democrats are threatening to veto it. Guess the 3.4% rate isn't THAT important to them...

As far as Obama on Fallon goes? Cool? Thrb. Only if you're a trained seal that has no intellectual capacity except to clap for your kippers. I watched the bit and the whole thing was awkward, stilted, and made all the participants look desperate rather than 'cool'. 'Cool' doesn't go out and try that hard to be cool. Cool is cool without having to slow jam. And Obama isn't cool. He's cold. If he wants to put on a clown nose, go on Fallon and do stupid human tricks in a desperate attempt to shore up his plummeting poll numbers in the youth vote then go ahead. He'd have done better to be less of a disaster for 3.5 years so he wouldn't have to play damage control today.

Parenthetically, this "College Bubble" has been coming for a long time. The value of a 4-year degree has been plummeting, while college costs have been going through the roof. Rather than redesign thier business model, colleges have - like the Post Office - desperately been trying to peddle student loans as a means of maintaining the status quo. Like the Housing Bubble, the Education Bubble cannot be sustained and is on the verge of popping. Let it blow now. Let the loan rates go back to where they were in the first place. Students should not be taking about loans to go to school anyway. I worked my way through undergrad school on part time jobs and living on Hamburger Helper for 5 years. I biked everywhere I went, and my only possessions were thrift store junk I picked up when I could afford it. When it wwas all over I graduated, got a job, and slowly worked my way up with hard work, diligence, and frugal living. That's how you get an education - and not just a 'college' education but a LIFE education. Who ever established the STUPID practice of telling students to borrow thier way through college? Yup. Democrats and Liberals.

Sen. McConnell Assumes Women on board for War on Women

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Women agree that this is a War on them or haven't you checked the poll numbers for women

It would be more accurate to say that LIBERAL women agree with these LIBERAL pundits that there is some mythical GOP "war on women". The so-called poll you reference is a single poll conducted by ABC was oversampled with LIBERAL women. The overall numbers show Obama having no significant lead (49 to 45 = insignificant) among women.

Still in denial?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/polls/postabcpoll_04082012.html

901. Generally speaking, do you usually think of yourself as (a Democrat), (a Republican), an independent or what?
Democrat Republican Independent Other (vol.) No opinion
4/18/12 34 23 34 5 3

Now - you tell me... Does 34% Democrats, 34% "Independants", and 23% Republican sound like any sort of representative sample? This poll's results were 100% unadulterated bullcrap, and they were used deliberately to reinforce the false claim that the Democrats are desperately peddling about this bogus, completely farcical "war on women". The whole "War on women" is a line of leftist propoganda that is being used as a distraction to try and talk about anything EXCEPT Barak Obama's record of failure, incompetence, and the REAL "war" in America, which is Odumbo's war on the economy with his stupid moron idiot policies.

Obama's Biological Father Speaks About His Union Activism

Januari says...

Interview with notable African-American poet and journalist Frank Marshall Davis. Frank is mentioned in Barak Obamas "Dreams From My Father", as a drinking buddy of his grandfather and an African American that made an impression on the now President as a young man growing up in Hawaii. The Film & Media Archive partnered with the Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR) at the University of Hawaii West Oahu to preserve the interview.

From the YouTube link... HELL of a leap you make with that title...
