I don't think it was ever claimed that "any publicity is good publicity" applied to companies and brands. That aphorism applies to celbrities and other public figures who trade on mere notoriety. >> ^Stormsinger:
Whatever your stance, I think we can all agree that SWA has bought themselves a world of pain...the old meme of "there's no such thing as bad publicity" just ain't so.
I expect to see an apology from them in the next day or two.

I don't think it was ever claimed that "any publicity is good publicity" applied to companies and brands. That aphorism applies to celbrities and other public figures who trade on mere notoriety.
Furthermore "any publicity is good publicity" is not really a meme. I call meme abuse.

Seconded.

You hear of a star in a movie, who recently did something that probably made the baby jesus cry. That's gonna draw a crowd just to see that person. You hear about an airline that screws over its passengers.. you're probably not going to spend 500+ bucks on a ticket to say "Hey, they were right, they DO suck"

Also, it's not a meme, it's a "saying"

What saddens me is that you understand its place, and yet completely miss its significance. The combination of George Michael, 80s pop-ballad, Andrew Ridgley's hair, and Christmas tunes, takes Last Christmas into a different echelon of terrible that justifies its existence. Not so much 'so bad it's good' - I do not overstep - but moreso 'so bad it has earned its place' in music history. Very few manufactured pop tunes have achieved this status, and you have, through shortsighted ignorance and far-too-simplistic logic, downvoted one such tune.

Andrew Ridgley sheds a single tear for you on Christmas Day.

And I would do it again and again. Wham epitomises the worst of music, taste and society in general. No redeeming qualities...this is going on your permanent record

You... you (*choke*) voted down Wham!'s Last Christmas? Sweet Baby Jesus! Have you forgotten the true meaning of Christmas? May Santa have mercy on your soul, scrooge.

I don't think downvoting is an appropriate response, though I feel your pain. Sometimes the only choice for some videos includes commercials. For example, I have a lot of music videos embedded from Yahoo, originally uploaded by Yahoo Music. This means that sometimes there will be pre-roll commercials with them. So why did I choose them? Mostly they weren't my first choices, but the originals from YouTube, MySpace, etc. were yanked because of DMCA bullshit. So then I used Yahoo embeds, because I know they probably won't go dead because the music labels are collecting royalties from the ad revenue generated by Yahoo.

It's a bit of a Faustian bargain when you post videos with ads in them. We all hate the ads, but then we all hate it when our videos go dead because of DMCA claims. So if you really hate them then just don't watch those videos, but please don't downvote them just because of that. Also, it makes baby Jesus cry.

Oh yeah, it's different in a work environment, I'll agree to that. You can go too far both ways - saying things that are spiteful for the sake of it, and being so PC that you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings no matter how crazy they or their beliefs are. It's easy to be high and mighty here and say "I would do this and that", but it's always different in a real life situation. If the discussion came to it, I would both prick as many holes in the theory and mock it, because it's very obviously not based on reality, but otherwise I would just keep my nose to myself. I don't want them to hear my opinion because I want them to hear my opinion - only dickweeds are like that - so I will only give my opinion, irl, when prompted or when there is a good reason for it.

If a teacher got all insulted about a baby jesus joke, I would, however, not be able to take him (or her) seriously as a teacher anymore.
