Why is every song that has some form of synthesizer element labeled "electronica" here? Electronica is a specific form of music. It's not just "dance music with a synth" because then everything is Electronica

i created the channel specifically with 'sub-genre" in mind.knowing full well the tag was a corporate creation to sell records.
the reason was to allow sifters (and viewers) to navigate a bit easier and to help specify a bit easier.
i could have gone with plain "electronic" but then that could be confused as a sun-category of "engineering".
so the blanket meaning of "electronica" was more for ease of definition rather than to specify a single subset of a genre that literally can be broken down into hundreds of sub-categories.

That moment when the band realizes they've made it (0:16)

It's because they aren't synthed to shit and back. They play their own instruments. They do awesome live shows where they aren't lip synching their own songs. They don't depend on drama or sex to peddle their music. They make good music videos. They're a good band. That transends the spirituality/christian theme 'downsides' that an athiest may have for bands in general.
>> ^shinyblurry:
I'm surprised that atheists enjoy them, considering the explicitly spiritual and christian themes interwoven into their music

Also, they're not preaching.

A little techno to brighten your day

bmacs27 says...

Exactly. Electronica is a bit too broad a term for me. I mean "club music" or producer music. I don't mean synth pop or hip hop. I think Techno is understood by most people to mean something broader than Motown four on the floor or whatever. The only people that get uppity when you use that word are pedantic hipsters that know the 6 other words for that specific sub genre anyway. >> ^rottenseed:

I used to use "electronica" as a catchall and I hated when "techno" was used because techno is specific. However, I've come to realize that hip-hop, indie, alternative and pop are all electronica in many cases. Electronica describes the process (instrumentation) in making the music, not how that music is combined.>> ^bmacs27:

Techno ? this is down-tempo style of electronic.

Meh, I use techno as a catchall. If I'm talking about techno-techno I'll usually call it electro, or what have you. Besides, it's arguably ambient.

Marketa Irglova - Crossroads (live)

oritteropo says...

That was the version I watched first Then I watched the one I posted, and liked it more. Watching it again now I'm not entirely sure why, but perhaps from the synth drowning out her singing a bit?

Something I had forgotten until I was updating the tags was that the link between the Le Cargo session and that performance was the venue... this was probably on the same day as the Le Cargo recording.

Homemade Synthesizer

dystopianfuturetoday says...

Completely doable, because I've done it (though not from scratch). You just need triggers, cables and a sound generator (synth) to hook it to. I once took the triggers off some old electronic drums and put them on my acoustic kit, so that every time I hit a drum, it also triggered a synth event.

"Oh, this is me, nice".. QBO the robot sees his first mirror

westy says...

the robot part of this project to me seems to be prity much a waist of time.

I guess to the layperson putting really basic software into a robot shaped object and having voice synth with pre recorded stuff looks impressive and so that's why people do these projects.

we are still at a point where the software is miles behind and that is where the work needs to be done for "intelligent" robots , granted the underlying software that maps out the image for the program to learn what is what might good in this project but its hard to tell from this video.

I guess my point is that until the software has got past a certain threshold there is no benefit putting it on a plastic case with wheels. To me the pre recorded voice and fake communication is as believable and beneficial to robotics as sticking eyes on a hoover.

Saying that I love physical robots that are actually progressing things like BIG DOG , or the Medical robots that can lift people , or the Exoskeletons that help old and disabled people walk , we are probably another 10-30 years before we will be able to marry convincing and practical AI with a robot in a way that's of real use.

LOTR with a new Theme Song

MaxWilder says...

This reminds me so much of the cheesy action movies of the 80's and early 90's. I can't help thinking what might have happened if they'd used the classical sound with a choir slowly singing in latin rather than synth-pop. They might suddenly become more serious and epic!
