Photo-Realistic Virtual World Rendered LIVE server-side

mechadeath says...

I also work in the game industry and am very familiar with current and near-future rendering technology and am certain that this video a hoax, pitch or that the gentleman is misinformed about what can be done serverside.

Whenever you hear a designer/producer saying "you can do anything you want in this game blah blah blah..." they are lying and quite possibly incompetent - i've seen a lot of these promises before, every feature of the game is utterly infinite with no real basis in what's possible or how to do it.

Assuming this is actually an interactive environment in the video, the biggest reason this can't happen is that the rendering strategy is dead wrong. This is like the opposite of bit torrent; instead of the clients spreading the rendering load, the server's processing and bandwidth are slammed. The farms that run WOW servers can barely keep track of player positions and data validation, let alone rendering "hundreds of animated characters on screen at once with full raytraced reflections in realtime." This would be a neat feat for a server to do in realtime for ONE offsite client, let alone thousands.

I long for the day when this is possible, but what we have here isn't even smoke and mirrors, its just bullshot.

Religulous Movie Trailer

quantumushroom says...

Religion is based not on science but faith.

The man-made global warming myth is based not on science but on self-annointed leftists' smoke and mirrors.

God gave man free will, including the choice to do wrong. Leftists won't even offer you that much.

The craziest religious kooks do way less harm to others than organized communism.

WMDs? (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

Saddam was not a terrorist, to say he is a terrorist is a logically fallacy, that would make Bush a terrorist as well for invading two sovergien nations. Also does that make the US a terrorist nation to be the only country in the world to use nuclear weapons offensively? Imagine that! Any day those guys could nuke someone! The horror! We must invade now!

The case for WMDs in Iraq was built because of the Bush Administration desire to go to war in Iraq riding off the 9/11 attacks, since it was not possible to rationally argue for it in anyway the WMD case was built relying mostly on the information of a single informant code named 'Curveball':

Curveball was the pseudonym given by the Central Intelligence Agency to Rafid Ahmed Alwan an Iraqi citizen who defected from Iraq in 1999, claiming that he had worked as a chemical engineer at a plant that manufactured mobile biological weapon laboratories as part of an Iraqi weapons of mass destruction program. Alwan's allegations were subsequently shown to be false by the Iraq Survey Group's final report published in 2004. Despite warnings from the German Federal Intelligence Service regarding the authenticity of the claims, the US Government utilized them to build a rationale for military action in the lead up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, including in the 2003 State of the Union address, where President Bush said "we know that Iraq, in the late 1990s, had several mobile biological weapons labs", and Colin Powell's presentation to the UN Security Council, which contained a computer generated image of a mobile biological weapons laboratory. On November 4, 2007, 60 Minutes revealed Curveball's real identity. Former CIA official Tyler Drumheller summed up Curveball as "a guy trying to get his green card essentially, in Germany, and playing the system for what it was worth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curveball_(informant)

This all lead up to Colin Powell's presentation at the UN, utterly destroying any shred of credibility of both Powell and the CIA. The case for war was cherry picked. After the war various study groups were formed to solidify the case for WMDs, the admission that no WMDs were found or any found were from depleted 1990 Gulf War stocks was much to damaging for the Administration which argued that Iraq had nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, so various counter study groups were formed since there was political motivation to build a legitimated case for war in Iraq:

On January 23, 2004, the head of the ISG, David Kay, resigned his position, stating that he believed WMD stockpiles would not be found in Iraq. "I don't think they existed," commented Kay. "What everyone was talking about is stockpiles produced after the end of the last Gulf War and I don't think there was a large-scale production program in the nineties."

In a briefing to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Kay criticized the pre-war WMD intelligence and the agencies that produced it, saying "It turns out that we were all wrong, probably in my judgment, and that is most disturbing."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Survey_Group

This of course all makes sense, the administration couldn't come from the invasion say it was catastrophically mistaken in gathering intelligence pre-invasion, so various counter arguments were created everything ranging from Iraq had to be invaded because it had skilled labor in the WMD industry, to that knowledge could seep into Syria and Iran (which it of course did due to the Iraqi dispora).

However all this was damage control, and the administration skillfully changed the narrative now to freedom and democracy in Iraq as well as "We're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here".

The worsening of the war also diverted public attention, but it is telling that most of the media avoided exploring this topic like it was the black plague, the usual patriotic attacks along the line of "Our troops are dying and questioning their sacrifice even if no WMDs are found, is unpatriotic." Never mind that they wouldn't need to die considering international pressure during UN discussions around January 2003 would lead to eventual opening up of Iraq to serious inspections, but war was on the agenda months before, when US was preparing to go to war with Afghanistan, it was already preparing for war in Iraq.

I can attest to this personally since I was in Kuwait at the time, the build up of man power and arms was well underway even before December/January. The administration decided to act unilaterally, the UN and coalition thing were just smoke and mirrors to create some sort of legitimacy to what was basically an unprovoked invasion.

But the facts are clear The Iraq Survey group under Charles Duelfer said Iraq's nuclear capability had decayed and not grown since the 1991 war. This was reported in October 2004, "Report concludes no WMD in Iraq", of course as I said the narrative was being actively changed by then the Administration said that the report showed "intent" so it was good we attacked then when we did. Which is about as logically as saying the US has intent to nuke someone else because it happens to possess nuclear weapons and has done it before thus we should invade and disarm it.

The video belongs to its own agency, in case anyone still cars about that. Nice little submission, should definitely make it up to the front. Will promote this one up when there's time.

More info from a duplicate YT submission on the original ad agency:

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN: Second Thoughts About Fluoride (Science Talk Post)

qruel says...

^lots of smoke and mirrors from rembar. hype up and overexaggerate a false claim about me plagarizing when it was a simple oversight that was quickly acknowledged and corrected. Feel free to take a look through any of my posts on fluoride and one would see attributions all over the place. I have no need or desire to claim anothers work for myself. I've already stated why I posted the summary and how the link got left off. As far as I'm concerned the case is closed on that aspect. So you can quit the feigned outrage and shock rembar.

Why on earth would I appease your ego on this subject when you've already stated that it is the equivilent of creationism and intelligent design ?
Insults like that show you are not open minded, so why bother debating you on the specifics?

the short of it is as I've been saying all along. There are scientific studies that have been done by scientist on the subject of fluoride (finding results that you apparently aren't aware of or do not agree with). That does not make them any less scientific (meaning this subject should still be included in the science channel)

simple as that

Study: False statements preceded war (Politics Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

I was in Kuwait at the onset of Gulf War 2, when embedded reporters were wearing gas masks reporting SCUD strikes from Iraq I was playing Quake 3 at a LAN. Anyone in the Middle East could tell you it was bullshit, hell the US was maintaining a No Fly Zone over Iraq since 1991, sporadically launching cruise missiles to take out targets. Anything closely related to a WMD storage site was bombarded to kingdom come. UN sanctions assured no high end equipment was sent into the state, which was in severe economic decline at the time used to shore up political power by Saddam.

2 wars. 6 years. Nearly 1.1 trillion dollars in a defense industry at a time of economic recession. A smoke and mirrors declaration of Global War on Terrorism without focusing on cutting the head of Al-Qaeda, instead going on a crusade in the Middle East. Its all about projection of power, not about preventing tyranny or terrorism and or spreading freedom.

you continue to confuse, belwilder and confound me. While I couldn't agree more with you when you state "knowledge being the ultimate power for freedom, or a weapon of control."

But if that is the case, then why do you persistently berate me for trying to provide "knowledge" to those of faith ? A recent study indicated that 80% of people don't know the details about their faith (what they believe) in regards to the bible.

I mainly spout for those who are on the fence and aren't aware of the "details". People sell religion as the "truth", but when one looks behind the curtain they realize it is smoke and mirrors. Don't get pissed at me for wanting to help bpeople see behind the curtain.

you say

"some simply avoid issues like these, conflict at any cost being foreign or uncomfortable.....the folks that dive head-first into issues with gusto are seekers of truth and meaning......"

I would put myself in the seekers of truth category. so again, why the constant need to harass me ?

you also say

"the tone may seem scolding, but sometimes effective"

scolding ? your immature name calling does not fall under "scolding". I appreciate your comments much more when you leave out the ad hom attacks. you have enough knowledge in your head about the issues to contribute really quality comments without reverting to nasty and uncalled for comments about my character.

Great example, using that Tesla article, to use to explain my conviction, that most likely, technologies exist, and have existed for some time now, that would render the use of petroleum for power, ancient history the day after tomorrow.

Tesla would not play the money game, so they kept him around, under virtual lock and key, until he was gone-why would they want to give the world free energy? That would fuck up the contrived economic monster they feed......this is why when folks talk about solar power and wind power and alternative fuels, recycling, etc., it isa goddamn diversion from the real issue, which is, knowledge is power, and we are being controlled and herded.

Free energy from the ether, is available, real, and present. We simply are kept in the dark, black, pool of oily control.

Fuck solar power and hybrid cars....I want real energy!!! The energy they keep from us-the knowledge that would kill their game, has always been the stuff of lock and key.....same mechanism that kept slaves form learning to read in America......knowledge being the ultimate power for freedom, or a weapon of control.

War in Iraq is war against Al Qaeda?

honkeytonk73 says...

'Al-Qaeda affiliates' he says. Loosely at that. These so-called affiliates are nothing more than a bunch of organized anti-US Iraqi locals labeling themselves as Al-Qaeda even though they have zero connection to Bin Laden and his ilk. In some instances, leaders of such groups despise Bin Laden, but as the saying goes 'The enemy of my enemy is also my friend.'

Though they are all so quick to forget to mention that their invasion is what spawned such groups. Al-Qaeda had a ZERO footprint in Iraq prior to the US invasion.

More lies. More smoke and mirrors. More propaganda.

well i think you made ^that comment because you assume i am "anti atheist" rather than taking the time to realise that i am a contrarian and I wish people would use logic and reasoning to make a point rather than hype and buzzwords and smoke and mirrors.

If a brainworm is an idea, Islam is a brainworm.
But the idea of a brainworm is just an idea. It's just a way of putting it. It can make logical sense but not be true.

When people who have a firm position on something (i.e. atheists or devout believers) come across a theory that sounds coherent, they repeat it ad infinitum in order to make it more "true", because as we all know, repeating a lie makes it the accepted truth.

Within the brainworm theory, i agree, islam is a brainworm.
Within the entire universe I disagree, i think it is the wrong way of looking at things. To me, these evolutionists want to project their evolution theory onto everything, because they only see the world in terms of evolution. Just like religious people only see the world in terms of religion.

I am a designer, and i often fall into the same trap, i think everything is about design. (i mean graphic design, not "intelligent" design).
It's called "vocational prejudice" or something. I genuinely believe the world could be a perfect place if we had more typographers and better architects. Then i realise that i only put so much priority on the importance of design because I AM a designer.

Anyway.

If god is everything, how can god not exist? lol.

Stick with me budzos, i know you vote for unpopular clips that i also vote for so we can't be so opposite as you think.
