Siri finds out Steve Jobs died

Are iPhone users hipster doofuses?

longde says...

I suspect alot of the iphones I see in Beijing are sciphones.

Chinese and other emerging market consumers can get quite alot out of a regular phone; that has always amazed me.

heh heh, nice vid...
here in china, the iphone is all the rage - but like the vid implies, people here buy it mostly for the name recognition and 'prestige' ... even when the features don't match up to the latest devices by samsung, htc, etc
although most of these phones and/or their components are made right here, the masses seem less tech savvy than westerners
case in point, i'll be sitting around with chinese friends and everybody's got their smartphones at hand... i'll start doing a comparison of the various handsets, and they'll just stare blankly... go silent for a minute or so, and then blurt out, 'but this is an iphone!' hahaha
right now they're all excited about the iphone 4s, and especially siri - i haven't yet had the heart to tell them that siri doesn't support chinese (in fact, most people don't seem to be aware that siri was available over a year ago, but apple snapped up the company, reworked the app, and launched it with the 4s as something new and revolutionary)
anyway, it's all funny - i'm pleased as pie with my htc... with better camera, vid resolution, memory, processor, screen size, and gps -- zero problems and more fun and free apps than i have time for... as well, my provider gave it to me for free (~us$700) after 10+ years of customer loyalty
only possible gripe would be battery life, but between the recharges i get while driving, sitting at the comp, or even with my portable recharger (us$28), it's never really been much of an issue

TellMe vs Siri

Samsung Galaxy 10.1 vs iPad 2 (Geek Talk Post)

I like how everyone is warming to the new iphone and Siri in particular. I was really amazed when Apple took a beating for pushing out what is clearly a very good phone. You have to wonder what magic they'll be required to perform come the iphone 5.

I done been hearing rumors that Siri is coming to the iPhone 4, but this is doubtful as there is a hardware limitation there - a significantly slower processor. Other than that, yea, lots of these things are business decisions rather than technical limitations. Remember when apple blocked the app that made the Volume button into a shortcut to take pictures - and then after a while released a new version of the camera software that had the feature in it. Lots of things like that happen too.
>> ^dag:

It's not about technical limitations. It's product alignment and yes, cynically, selling more iPhone 4s's. But even taking out the cynical bit - Siri does make more sense on the iPhone than an iPad. Much of Siri relies on GPS which is not built in to the iPad WiFI version. Siri also needs you to be online all the time to work- whereas the iPad is not. For these reasons and a few more - Siri on the iPad would not be an optimal experience- and if it's not optimal - Apple doesn't do it.
The real question is why isn't Siri on the 4 or even the 3GS? I'm afraid that's mostly about the Benjamins.

>> ^gwiz665:
The iPad 2 has identical hardware to iPhone 4S, then only differences is that 4S is downclocked to 800 MHz (from 1 GHz) and that it obviously has a different resolution. It could pull off Siri easily I would wager (unless it has some sort of extra gadget inside especially for it, which is doubtful).

As an iOS and Android developer, I recommend the iPad 2. From a user standpoint is has better apps and, at least to me, the interface "feels" better. In fairness though, I have not worked directly with the Galaxy 10.1, so I don't know too much about the performance of that. The iPad 2 is a beast and can pull off quite a bit of stuff though.
With dropbox on it, it becomes a lot more useful for work stuff, since you can easily move files on and off.
Siri is not available on the iPad 2, yet, at least. And nothing has been announced, so this should be kept in mind when purchasing, if Siri is a wanted feature.
There are apps that can interact from iPhone to iPad, and you can tether the iPad to use the iPhone as a hotspot, which can be nice.

I'm quite surprised siri isn't on the ipad 2... but i'd assumed it had the hardware for it.
Soooo it's apple, there's only gonna be one of two reasons - either it doesn't have the hardware (gwizz will know) or they're releasing a new ipad soonish and want to have a selling point. I'd recommend looking at estimated release rumours for a new ipad, might play into your decision.

I'm no expert.. there's the cloud system that's in place now, where you can sign up to wireless syncing between devices; anything you do on your iphone will be reflecetd on your ipod for certain linked things like schedules and vice versa (i think).

Maybe another thing to factor in is you basically CANNOT beat siri right now. Not only is it outstripping all competition but its potential is of skynet proportions by all accounts, and extremely difficult to replicate.

Tablets are different to phones though, and i've never experienced an ipad or any other tablet. I suppose it'd mostly depend on what she does on it? If it's work, and she uses windows for work, might be better going with something that has more open support than an ipad, or if she wants to use it for reading, web and general utility then i'd say the ipad holds most of the cards.

I can say from the perspective of someone who really likes the iphone that when someone really likes the iOS style and feel, nothing less really will suffice. By that i mean if you buy her anything less than one of those tablets on star trek, there might still be a twang of disappointment that it's not an ipad. People can get fussy about apple, as you know

Siri Argument

Siri Argument

I barely like College Humor anymore, but that was amazing. I especially liked it when Siri was searching for a place to hide...seriously made me want to buy an iPhone and start verbally abusing it.
