Life in DPRK North Korea

What are you reading now? (Books Talk Post)

luxury_pie says...

After realizing what I'm missing out on currently am reading The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy which is one of those books making me cry laughing.
Hitchen's God Is Not Great is definitely worth the read for his articulate mind alone.
And I can't really say I'm finished reading The Wheel Of Time while the last book is still missing.
For all the fantasy-junkies out there: Robert Jordan.
I came across a lot of critics that his books are boring and slow paced, which is absolutely, mind bogglingly deranged to say in my opinion.
For what I know of the fantasy world one of the most interesting and best thought out universes in existence.

Hi, my name is Robert, and I'm an ex Mormon.

I was at a book signing for GRRM within a week of Feast coming out. When Boarders gave Martin some time to read chapters, talk about his characters and work, Martin said something along the lines of Dance is practically finished, and it could be expected out within the year. So, we had a 5 year wait for Feast after Swords, and what should have been another 1 year for Dance, is turning into 4.

Hopefully he wont do a Robert Jordan on you then... Have one last book left (apparently it was so large that it would have been split into 2 or 3 books) to finish but writes a prequel instead and then dies without finishing the series...

Let's hope that doesn't happen, because if it does i'll be infinitely more annoyed than when Jordan failed to finish the Wheel of Time series...

Here's an idea. Finish the sodding series, or at least A Dance With Dragons! Been waiting far far too long for that book, and Martin seems to have more interest in fucking about than writing.
That's not to say this series doesn't look good. JUST FINISH THE DAMN BOOKS FIRST! shakes fist

Yeah, the Dragonlance series is amazing. I have no patience for Lord of Rings, at least in book form, though.

In reply to this comment by Zifnab:
Well I'll give it a go. In no particular order:

1. Dragonlance Chronicles - Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. This is the series that really got me hooked on reading way back in high school and I still really enjoy it today.

2. Wheel of Time - RIP Robert Jordan. Brandon Sanderson is going to complete the final book (A Memory of Light) for RJ as the novel was incomplete at the time of his death.

3. Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert A. Heinlein. Along with most of Heinlein's other work.

4. Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling.

5. The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien.

Plus many more, as you can see I'm an avid reader of fantasy. I also really enjoy A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny, and some other's that I can't think of at the moment...

Robert Jordan, 1948-2007

Reylor says...

Robert Jordan is the reason I started reading fantasy, and was a childhood hero of mine. I wanted to write epic books when I grew up. I finally got the chance to meet him at a book signing in Denver (Book 8's release). Just listening to him talk about the Wheel of Time let me that much further into the world he created, and it was an honor and a privilege to have enjoyed that world.

He will be sorely missed.

Robert Jordan, 1948-2007

Zifnab says...

"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose.... The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of time.
But it was a beginning."

Robert Jordan fought a valiant fight against cancer. It is a sad day, Robert Jordan will be missed. RIP

SciFi Books that should be Made into Movies (Scifi Talk Post)

Fletch says...

-Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle" (Appian Way, Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, is working on it)
-Card's "Ender's Game" (in pre-production now)
-The "Foundation" books by Asimov could be a really cool trilogy (or more) of movies, too
-And about a hundred fantasy titles by Piers Anthony, Raymond Feist, Robert Jordan, etc.

I read it again every time a new book comes out. I've tried to just pick it up at the start of a new book, but there are so many story threads and characters that I find I'm reading about stuff I've already forgotten. Anyway, starting from the beginning each time is still really enjoyable. I love the way Robert Jordan writes. Sad that he is sick now.

You know it! I have read the series about 6 times all the way through...
