I've always said there should be two brake light configs:
1) always on for speeds above 30 mph
2) fast blinking for speeds below 30 mph

I've had similar thoughts, only I figured it would be more valuable if they flashed when rapidly decelerating instead of based on their speed. Cars are all equipped with accelerometers for the airbag system anyway. It can sometimes be difficult to tell if the car up ahead is lightly breaking or if they're coming to a screeching halt, especially at night.
Perhaps one day all cars will be equipped with those 'sonar' type systems that allow them to match the speed of the car in front of them when using cruise control. I see no reason why the same system couldn't warn you of pending impact when the cruise control is off.

Of course this is why seasoned drivers (I picked this up in Europe but have seen it in North America), kick in their four-way hazard lights when braking hard in heavy traffic.

Especially useful if you have yellow tail turn signal lights rather than the cheap "all-red" rear which I simply despise.

There was this one crash - just this spring - when I was driving family from Europe down to Niagara Falls and there was a sudden highway slowdown.

I was keeping a safe distance, but had to break pretty hard. I kicked on the 4-ways while I was at it. Car behind me noticed and slowed down okay. Whoever else was behind HIM though, was retarded/asleep... BOOM< CRUNCH> SMACK.

Yeah.

Called the OPP to report a multi-car collision... oh, just behind me, I'm fine.

This is fucking awesome.

On a side note, for anyone who's never ridden the Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls, slap yourself in the face with a wet rag and then watch this video. That should be a fair representation.

Worst Bad Beat in Poker History (and they got it on tape)

It can't be all about luck. I have a friend who I would stake in any game. He beats everyone all the time. He won $2700 a couple weekends ago, sitting down at an 8-man Casino game in Niagara Falls at 5:30AM.

I too have learned to fold pocket queens and only noobs think that rockets are a sure thing.

EV-1 : Who Killed The Electric Car ? OPEC ? US Govt ?

BlueGeorgeWashington says...

Agreed Farhad---I admire Tesla's work and yes...we wouldn't have AC if it weren't for Tesla's brilliance. Edison did not support AC as he thought DC was the only safe way to go and that AC was too dangerous as you know. The old Tesla AC Production Plant still stands next to Niagara Falls.

We are still using the same excuse a century later about how much more cheaper the combustion engine is. I'm aware of the multi-billion dollar oil industry and the politics that keep solar and electric development "on the back burner". A century ago we were un-aware of the the disasterous effects emissions would have on our health and planet. We know better now and need to get beyond fossil fuels before it's too late.

Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe-Zambia)

Farhad2000 says...

One of the best places that I visited when I lived in Africa was these falls. I did white water rafting there for the first time as well. The name Mosi-oa-Tunya in the local language means the smoke that thunders basically, because the actual falls can be heard and seen from quite a distance. The local beer was actually called Mosi as well. Great place to visit, one can bungee jump there as well.

I have to mention that the person taking the video must have visited right after the dry season ended, as the waterfall output in the helicopter overflight shows much more of the falls that I remember. Oh and watch out for the nice rainbow at 1:05.

----------------
The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya are situated on the Zambezi River, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, (17°55′24.05″S, 25°51′22.32″E) and are roughly 1.7 km (1 mile) wide and 128 m (420 ft) high. They are considered a remarkable spectacle because of the peculiar narrow slot-like chasm into which the water falls, so one can view the falls face-on.

David Livingstone, a Scottish explorer, visited the falls in 1855 and renamed them after Queen Victoria, though they were known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the "smoke that thunders". The falls are part of two national parks, Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia and Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe, and are one of Southern Africa's major tourist attractions. They are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Vastly larger than North America's Niagara Falls, Victoria is only rivalled by South America's Iguazu Falls (excluding large rapid like falls such as Livingston de Chutes). Whilst Iguazu is divided into over 270 (relatively) 'small' falls and cataracts, Victoria is the largest single sheet of water in the world , over 100 metres tall, and over one mile wide.
