Great New Dawkins Interview

videosiftbannedme says...

Ted Haggard calling Dawkins arrogant is like Hitler calling Dahmer a psychopath. WTF?

I love the continual look of contempt the host gives Dawkins through this entire interview. What is he threatened by? A difference of opinion? Who's the psycho?

which was posted a full day before this thread began.

But the point I saw was that all these videos made it through the queue:

Richard Dawkins responds to Jerry Falwell's students

jwray says...

Take all reviews with a grain of salt. Many reviewers plagiarize other reviewers instead of reading whole the book, and they have ulterior motives. When I compare reviews to books or movies I've read or seen, I usually find the reviews terribly shallow. I recommend The God Delusion to anyone who can read.

Dawkins just mercilessly debates with reasonable arguments and sometimes satirizes opposing viewpoints for the sake of argument in a way that is not crude or personal. Politeness should not include an unwillingness to dispute matters of fact in public discourse. I applaud Dawkins for having the balls to go to Lynchburg.

Dawkins v. Haggard:
Dawkins was going to debate Haggard's assertion that the earth is 6000 years old and Haggard just dodged the question by calling Dawkins arrogant. Reviewers who call Dawkins a variety of unflattering labels are employing a similarly ridiculous tactic to try to suppress Dawkins' well written book and direct conversation away from the meat and potatoes.

jlee22 wrote: I think it would be unfair to assume that most, if not all of the adult religious population hold their beliefs simply because their parents do.

The demographic evidence seems to contradict your claim indirectly. Hundreds of mutually contradicting religious sects contain five-sixths of the world population. By comparing religious beliefs and populations, you can infer that most of the believers are wrong (without knowing which ones are wrong). Combined with the remarkably low apostasy rate, this proves that most people tend to believe whatever their parents believed regardless of the inaccuracy of those beliefs. I know of no other good explanation for the diversity and heredity of religion.

Dawkins VS Haggard, Dead Parrot edition!

jwray says...

In case you haven't seen the original, here's Haggard in all his evasive stupidity:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjqUmuMhTsM

Whoever emphatically contradicts someone's religion must be an arrogant bigot, right? We all must be arrogant bigots because we emphatically deny Thor and Zeus. Who needs to respond to the material of an argument when you can just call your opponent arrogant instead?

Porn

bl968 says...

Modern religions take what is a perfectly natural thing, and makes people suppress it. When you do this, the pressure builds and builds until it explodes. Just look at Ted Haggard... Porn is a pressure relief valve on society, and it should be it easier to access, not harder for those who need it.

Looking back over this message, I feel the need to stress that no puns were intended or harmed, in the creation of this post!

im sure this is known but just for the record, Ted Haggard was found to be a meth smoking homosexual. Although he says he simply bought the meth out of temptation and never actually ingested it, plus that the male prostitute he hired was simply a massager.

Yeah - it's the whole thing (probably for a short amount of time!) Note: ex-National Association of Evangelical's President, Ted Haggard and his old Colorado Springs New-Life 'mega-church' featured 1 hour and 4 minutes in. (Comedy for the kids at the end during the credits).

CNN panel discussion slandering atheists!

Farhad2000 says...

Excuse me.

You wanna talk about hypocrisy? the pilgrims colonists originally left Great Britain because of RELIGIOUS PROSECUTION, why the hell do you think there is a vast separation between church and state, because the founding fathers didn't want that repeated. So now we are supposed to go back on that?

So a human being needs to be religious to develop a feeling of morality? Of what is right and wrong? that is a innate quality in all human beings. Thinking that one attains that only from religion is very naive.

And the last statement the woman makes, about Europe being mostly atheists, thus becoming more Islamic? So Islamic is instantly not religious and somewhat evil or worse? No wonder Paula Zahn ends it there because that was blatantly racist and xenophobic.

Strong Christians? Am sorry but Jerry Falwell, Ted Haggard and Pat Robertson don't constitute strong Christians.

Douglas Adams's text on Atheism, read by Simon Jones

obscenesimian says...

I do believe that the term agnostic is far too "gray" a term for rigid thinkers like Dawkins.

Agnosticism merely acknowledges that we do not know "god" (a loaded term if there ever was one) in any way, and that it may in fact be unknowable, which all evidence supports. Dawkins examples (teapot orbiting the sun, easter bunny atheists etc) are glib, contrived arguments that do not illuminate or inform anyone, and completely ignore the meat of the issue.

Agnosticism is a philosophy that recognises that we do not know God, whatever it is, and we may well never know it. It may exist, or not. We stop short at declaring knowledge of god. We still seek truth, cast a jaundiced eye at proclomations of faith, and rely on the best available evidence. We just don't cast aspersions about like Dawkins or Adams.

Why do some atheists insist on abusing Agnostics, who are NOT the problem? How many died in the last great Agnostic purge? We merely nod and let the Dawkinses and Haggards of the world scream and shout about how they know, without doubt, that their counterparts are wrong. They have been convinced. I still refrain to take that final step, and allow myself the soothing caress of knowing, for sure, beyond a reasonable doubt that I am absolutely correct.

Now if there was some money to be made, I might be convinced to gather some militant agnostics and bust some heads up in the joint at oxford, then the Haj, and maybe later the vatican and some temples in india.

P.S. Please be aware that my disapproval of parts atheist rhetoric is not in any way a denial of scientific fact or approval of any religious thought.

Shit, I almost forgot to bust heads up in Nauvooooooo and Salt Lake shitty.

Hi-larious. Welcome to the irony-free zone.

I wasn't sure this was real.. narrator seems like a perky California VH1 guy. But it's real.. they're also concerned with "MARILYN MANSON AND THE LONG GREASED POLE INTO HELL"... heh. Paging Ted Haggard!

Red Volkaert and Cindy Cashdollar - Sweet Twang

silvercord says...

This is sweet music. Below is some stuff I found on the Web about them.

After years of developing a cult reputation among guitarists, Volkaert got the call to become lead guitarist for one of his heroes, Merle Haggard, in 1997. Since then he has been a "Stranger" in Merle's band, recording and touring non-stop, and appearing in concert and national television before millions of people.

What makes steel guitar and Dobro player Cindy Cashdollar's musical journey stand out is a combination of restless creativity and an uncanny ability to understand and add to a wild array of styles. She has worked with the likes of Leon Redbone, Graham Parker, Bob Dylan ( on his Grammy winning "Time Out Of Mind" CD), Jorma Kaukonen, Peter Rowan, and the stellar Cajun group BeauSoleil. As the steel guitarist for eight years with western swing kingpins Asleep At The Wheel, she logged many more additional road miles and won five Grammys.

Doin' Nails for Jesus- from Jesus Camp

raven says...

I don't think this film portrays them as stupid, and this girl is obviously not... I mean, consider the probability that she has never been exposed to an objective viewpoint regarding the matter of faith... given that consideration, she is actually fairly intelligent to have grasped all these concepts she's been fed... so ultimatly it the film does not question the intelligence of cult churches, but rather their methods of ministry and the message they are feeding their children.

By the way, this is not the scariest moment of the film, there are many many more... and a rather priceless interview with Rev Ted Haggard, where he tells an aspiring young minister to use the 'cute kid' thing while he's still got it, what a dick.
